You can buy a SIM card on eBay for about $2 and have it mailed.

Download Kwikpay from the United Kingdom iOS App Store. With this app you can load the SIM card. SIM card comes with a phone number attached to it. You can receive incoming calls and text before loading the SIM card. You can use PayPal to pay. Every load cost .20 pence.

I would recommend Three PAYG which is 1p/MB and doesn't expire. Other providers may be cheaper for heavy users but this is the simplest. However the SIM is £1-£2 to buy at a shop and they may or may not be sold in Tesco too, and you have to buy vouchers to top up with non-UK cards, and it won't work in old phones that don't do 3G.

Yeah, specific to Tesco.

Apart from downloaded google maps, other offline maps possibilities include maps.me or osmAnd.

Does the phone (iphone SE or iphone 5c in my case (old phones i know...)) have to be unlocked in order to temporarily use a data-only SIM? I've actually never manipulated the SIM card in my phone, would the people at Tesco do it for me?

Yes, it has to be unlocked.

I was thinking of pre-ordering a SIM such that I can insert it on the plane and have data once landed, but now its getting close (3 weeks from departure).
My plan is:

To bring an unlocked iphone, my old one, and purchase a data-sim at a vendor at the airport or close by (Paddington after the HEX). I would like good amounts of data as I plan to broadcast a personal hotspot so my other devices (+ wife's) can all use the single connection.

Anyone have a sense of whether this is feasible and roughly how much a 2-3gb sim would cost?

Is it so important that you have data for the 10 minutes you are taxiing to the gate?

When my dad visited I got him a Lebara SIM which gave 3GB for 30 days for £10 (you might have to pay something for the SIM if you buy it in person rather than online to a UK address)

No, first few minutes taxing to the gate are not important.
Definitely would want some the sim once land side, before taking hex into the city.
£10 for 3gb is exactly what I'm looking for.

an alternative is to order a sim from amazon - collection points include the post office at T3. (e.g., you can get a three sim card with 5gb data for £15).
I think both Heathrow and HEX have free wifi anyway.

For a one-day visit, I'd look into the roaming options provided by your carrier in the US. The amount of data you'd use in one day would be miniscule, particularly if you're very careful about which of your apps you allow to connect to cellular data while you're there, and registering a PAYG SIM card is a bit of a hassle for such a short visit.

Turned out to be simple as cake. Got a card from Carphone warehouse, slipped it in the phone, they set it up there and I was good to go.
