What Do I Do If I Miss My Connecting Flight?

I don't know if this is the right place to make this thread, but if not, please move it to the right place.

My question,

I will be air travelling on my own for the first time this September from Sydney to Hong Kong to London and I'm worried that I may come to the horrible situation of my flight being delayed or cancelled and consequently miss my connecting flight (operated by a different airline).

I presume the connecting airline won't assume any responsibility from the last airline? If so what do I do then (especially when it's not my fault)? Does this mean I would have to book and pay for another flight myself?

Thank you.

What do I do if I miss my connecting flight and it's not my fault?
If booked as 2 totally separate flights it all your problem
If booked as 1 reservation(PNR) it the airlines problem

From your other thread in the QR forum they are separate http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qanta...ight-desk.html
Are you flying QF Qantas or QR Qatar SYD-HKG? HKG-LHR is on BA in the other thread.
Will you have checked baggage?

If totally separate tickets in common airline jargon/usage you are not connecting.
You have 1 flight ending and later start another flight

Did you buy your itinerary in one single transaction or did you purchase the two flights separately (entering your card details on two separate occasions)?

That's (slightly) misleading given that more and more OTA offer flights on two different bookings. The customer makes one transaction, but has actually two bookings.

@WildStriker: Seems (from the other forum) that you have booked two separate flights and your connection would hence not be protected.

Can you give an example of this? I haven't seen it.

I have only seen OTAs/price comparison websites offering 'hacker' type fares which show a combined price, but it is made clear that two transactions are required.

OP's question has absolutely nothing to do with this forum! Mods alerted earlier.

I've seen Opodo and Edreams (same company) sell combined tickets on BA and U2. Those are obviously two separate tickets, but I wouldn't bet on it that the "common booker" would know that...

That means I would have to buy a new ticket?

If you bought completely separate tickets, then yes.

Yes

And your travel insurance may not pay out if it believes you left too little time between the flights.

Yes. With separate tickets its all you risk.
Do you have one or two PNR's (6 character booking references)?
QF will not transfer baggage between separate tickets
Who did you buy the flights from?
How much time between flights?

WildStriker's other associated thread, now in OW forum http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/onewo...ight-desk.html

WildStriker - can you please give us a clear answer to the questions that keep coming up. Have you made one or two bookings (i.e. did you purchase the segments separately)? What airlines and what flight numbers please. Only that way can we properly answer your question.

Based on his/her other posts, the OP is flying SYD-HKG on Qantas and HKG-LHR on BA with separate tickets. I think the original question has been answered.
