how much does it cost to fix lost dental filling in the London area?
My niece is half way into her 1.5-month trip in the UK. Last week, she
called me and asked me to call her dental insurance carrier in the US.
One of her teeth(#4?) had lost the filling and it was causing her a lot of
pain.
I called yesterday was advised that her policy coverage did not include
non-US locations. (not even Canada) That sounded just wrong to me,
as she was paying $78 a month for the coverage. Half of that $78 is paid
for by her employer. However, I guess it was her own fault for not noticing
this fine print.
I then called her own dentist in San Francisco. I emailed her the photo that
my niece took of her tooth with the filing missing. The dentist called me back
and told me that it would be about $1870, if she didn't have insurance. (but
with the insurance my niece has, it will be only a $10 co-pay) She didn't
have root canal done on that tooth. Based on the photo and the fact that
my niece has a lot of pain, the dentist felt that it's now necessary to do the
root canal before refilling the tooth.
Anyway, I'm wondering if there's a dentist that she can go to in the London
area. She will be there for 5 days staring next Tuesday. What would it
cost for something like this? Can anyone recommend a dentist?
Thanks!

Private root canal treatment at my local practice is about £150-£350 depending on where in the mouth it is (NHS treatment is £49, but I guess you wouldn't qualify). Afraid I don't know about London.

My son lost a filling whist visiting his GF in London a while back. Think it cost around $30 for a new filling. His dentist in the US said it wasn't worth redoing. Probably saved a couple hundred dollars having it done in the UK

$1870 for a root canal!? The price list on my dental surgery's website seems to be a few years old, but is under £400, and from £50 for a filling.
The NHS website has a dentist finder. As a visitor to the UK, your daughter probably won't be eligible for subsidised NHS treatment, but most practices will take on private patients. They are allowed to set their own prices, so it could be worth shopping around if it seems awfully expensive (or to find one with a spare appointment!)

As you'd expect, good dentists in central London aren't cheap. It took me a long time to find a London dentist I could trust but wasn't extortionate (I lived in London for almost 20 years). And finally I found one!
I recommend Metrodental. They're at Liverpool St and Monument (so both practices are in the City). I've been using them for several years now and am so happy with them that now I've moved to Hong Kong, I still fly back to London to use Metrodental. And I'm aware of quite a few expats who do the same from all over the world.

Their fees are listed on their website. It lists root canals from £325.
They're lovely people and at the top of their game. I definitely recommend you getting in touch with them.

Rather than rely on a photo that - unless you niece has some kind of medical camera - can't be that great, just go to a dentist. I'd have thought they could do a temporary filling that will last until she's home.
I broke a tooth (thought a filling had come out) and my dentist in London did the work over two visits for probably £150 all in.

My private dentist in Slough charges £85-95 for a filling and £450 for a porcaline crown. Root canals are about £350 on top but are not always necessary for a crown.
Expect to be charged for an x-Ray, course of antibiotics and maybe a replacement filling. You could probably reduce the price with a temporary filling and skipping the antibiotics. Wouldn't recommend the later if you are in pain though, tooth ache has to be one of the worst type of pain and I have two rounds of major abdominal surgery to compare it with
