Tips on finding short-term accommodation in Glasgow

A friend is going to spending the first few months of the year in Glasgow and is searching for accommodation. He is having difficulty finding somewhere, and we are grateful for any tips.

My friend is happy to do a houseshare or live on his own.

What sorts of websites do people use when searching for suitable short-term lodging in Glasgow? We have tried spareroom.co.uk and citylets. We have found that most people are very hesitant to consider lodgers for just three months, as they will have to restart their search in March.

Would it make sense to go through rightmove, even if the flats are normally advertised as long term?

Any ideas/contacts/hints are also welcomed via PM.

Is he looking to rent privately or through an agent?

We used Clyde Property although I think the minimum contract was six months. It might be worth giving them a ring and see if they can offer something less.

Thanks HIDDY - he's not really fussed about private or agent rentals; as long as he can find somewhere short-term within about £600 per month, that's fine.

Over on the east, the evening news also acts as a clearing house for shared lets... might want to try the Herald...

I would say the Herald would definitely be the best starting point.
Glasgow is very varied in the quality of areas - like any other city - but the intermingling is rather greater; street to street, almost. He would be very well advised to have a good look on the ground or at least ask people.
Depending where your friend is working, the Merchant City would be a good possibility, otherwise the West End or Park. I would only suggest south of the river if that's relevant to work - there are some very pleasant areas (Pollockshields, for example) but most of the life of the city is north of the Clyde.
(Apologies to any South Siders for any offence but, really, it is a bit suburban... and yes, I know that's rich coming from someone living in Ayr :))

As someone who spent most of my life living there, I can say for certain that Pollokshields has no c in it. :)
You're not wrong about it being a bit on the quiet side, but it is becoming a little livlier - while I was up over Christmas, I visited The Bungo Bar - which was mobbed with people who looked like they'd been airlifted in from Byres Road.

I stayed near the shields for a few years just across the road from Maxwell Park. It can be a bit out of the way and quiet so Shawlands would be a better option in the south side.
IIRC the place of work is Glasgow Uni so the south side is not the best place to be residing in.
