TWA Sells Coach-Seat Set On Ebay

Wall Street Journal, 7/10/01

TWA (www.twa.com) is giving travelers the chance decorate their homes with a touch of economy class.

TWA, which is now a unit of AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, is seeking to replicate American's "More Room Throughout Coach" seating. Thus, TWA has started removing 1,500 coach seats from its fleet.

Most of the seats will end up mothballed in American's warehouse in Tulsa, Okla. But TWA is putting one triple-seat set up for sale on eBay (www.ebay.com) beginning July 12. The seat set is mounted on a wooden base and comes with a plaque proclaiming that these are the first seats to be removed from a TWA plane.

The market for TWA memorabilia has heated up since the merger with American was announced. Private eBay sellers currently list more than 600 items, including a "Fly the Finest, Fly TWA" pencil, first-class tray linen and a vintage TWA junior hostess pin.

The seat auction will run for 10 days and proceeds will go toward Operation Liftoff, a charity that provides medical transportation and "wish trips" for children.

While most items sell for less than $10, TWA officials are optimistic that the seats will raise enough money to enable the charity to buy plenty of tickets on American. There is no minimum bid, but a spokesman for TWA says that the airline expects the auction to be "very popular" and plans are in the works for additional charity auctions.
