Does Turkish airline automatically assigned seats during check in?
I am flying tonight and last week I checked there were abundant seats on economy. Now there is only a few and I have already been assigned a seat by the system. App suggested that I need to pay for changing seats.
does the system automatically assign seats if you dont choose one ? I.e, is the seat map Im viewing reflecting how empty / full the flight would be ? Thanks

Yes. You will be assigned a seat before/during OLCI unless you have paid for ASR/been able to choose a seat in advance. You will not be able to change it during OLCI. You can inquire at check-in or the gate for a different seat.
The seat map tells you nothing/very little about the load of a flight.

The seats aren't pre-assigned. They are assigned (automatically) at the time of check-in. So people who neither pre-booked their seats, nor checked in yet, don't show on the map (yet).
