THY considering serving SYD

It had been reported in the past that THY were looking at serving Australia; it now appears that they are actively considering serving Australia via Bali.

Turkish Airlines is also now considering the use of fifth freedom rights to enter the Bali to Melbourne and Sydney markets. Turkish CEO Temel Kotil recently told CAPA that Turkish is considering the Istanbul-Bali-Melbourne and Istanbul-Bali-Sydney routes.

Over the past few years Turkish has evaluated several options for entering the Australia market – which remains a white spot in its gigantic and fast-growing global network. Services via Singapore and Jakarta were some of the earlier options for Australia stopovers, but Turkish is now favouring Bali. Turkish could eventually establish a mini-hub in Bali, with multiple daily flights from Istanbul to Australia via Bali.

Bali has the advantage of strong local traffic with Australia which Turkish can pursue. Turkish will likely experience strong demand for Istanbul-Bali given the success that the Gulf airlines have had in Bali in recent years. In 2015 Emirates launched services to Bali and Qatar Airways introduced a second daily flight.

On its Bali-Australia routes Turkish would have an opportunity to carry a combination of passengers originating in Istanbul or other European destinations, as well as local Bali-Australia traffic.

Well - they 'almost' announced SYD/MEL flights last year. I would not be overexcited as DPS-Aus is dominated by low cost airlines so the yield must be low...

I won't believe it until I actually see TK metal landing at SYD, they have intended to do this for god knows many times.

If realized, this would be a good way to redeem my E+ upgrade vouchers, possibly all the way from US/Canada to Australia with 1 voucher each way.

With 1 voucher required per flight, you'd then need THY to start flying from SYD to somewhere in the US/Canada in order to travel from North America to Australia with 1 voucher each way.

That won't happen!!!

It's the last continent missing from their network...

They have been talking about it for a few years now. I think it's just a matter of time.

Their home market is tanking. It's not a great time to start a costly expansion.
Someone has to finance all these shiny new planes.

I see the chance of 30% that Turkey will be hit by a Turkey-specific financial crisis in the next 3 years.

This is exactly the right time to stimulate connecting travel though.

It's almost as though they're going out of their way to find the lowest yielding traffic possible

+1

I think BKK-MEL/SYD or even SIN-MEL/SYD would have been a better idea less competition on BKK - australia than DPS - australia (and no LCCs) and EK can make BKK-SYD and SIN-MEL work.

Even KUL might be an option considering that the only competition they'd have is MH and AirAsia X (and EK KUL-MEL).

The route map is out-of-date with many cities missing (MIA,ATL,BOG,PTY,TNR,MRU,TPE,HAN)

Depending on whom you talk to, I've recently redeemed 1 voucher with JFK-IST-NRT (going to Chicago sales office), provided your connection is the quickest possibility between 2 cities.

That would mean the entire network.

I'm not buying it...
