Understanding J class
 
Does J class availability always mean upgrade with miles is possible? Or is it simply that upgrade with miles can only be performed if there is also J class availability, but J class alone itself doesn't signal upgrade availability? Would there need to be both J and I availability on expertflyer in order for upgrade with miles to be possible?

Expertflyer is only showing upgrade (J) availability, UA and A3 disagree.

Are you trying to upgrade with UA or A3 miles rather than TK Miles&Smiles miles? If you're trying to redeem partner miles, you would need award inventory which is "I".
"J" fare bucket upgrades are only for TK Miles&Smiles upgrades.
