Dear folks,

I have received an e-mail from Turkish Airlines that now it's possible to purchase the seat next to you for a charge via the TK website and the mobile app. Previously, this process must be done through the hotline or through a sales office.

This applies to all Turkish Airlines and AnadoluJet flights and those who purchase an extra seat would also have the opportunity to select their seats for free of charge in advance rather than paying for advance seating or waiting until online check-in.

Extra seat selection terms and conditions

  • If an extra seat is purchased via online channels, standard seat selection is made freely for the flight chosen and the extra seat. (Only for passengers with extra seat selection).
  • Extra seat selection cannot be made for extra-legroom seats and emergency exit seats.
  • One ticket is issued for passengers with extra seats. Base fare and fuel surcharges for the extra seat are added to total fee.
  • Other transactions of passengers whose extra seat ticketing is completed through the online channels (such as refund, ticket change and adding an infant passenger) are performed through call center, sales offices, and the agencies from which the ticket was purchased.
  • Extra seats can be purchased only during the ticketing process when ticketing is completed through the online channels. If passengers wish to purchase extra seats after the ticketing is complete, they should contact the call center or the sales offices.
  • Original ticket fare rules will be applied for reissue and refund transactions.
  • Passengers can purchase extra seats for Turkish Airlines or Anadolu Jet domestic and international flights from online channels. Extra Seat service is not available for the flight operated with partner airlines (codeshare and SPA).
  • Extra seat purchase from online channels is only available for Economy Class seats.
  • Extra seat purchase is not available with vouchers, star vouchers and after ticketing.
  • Earning miles with extra seats is not available.
  • Extra seats for adults and children can be purchased via online channels. Extra seat purchase for ticketings including other passenger types is not available.
  • Extra Seat and reservation right sales cannot be done together from online channels.
  • Passengers may continue the online check-in with the extra seat selection they have purchased during online ticketing.
  • Extra seat change cannot be made during online check-in.
  • Passengers who have purchased extra seats through channels other than the online channels can check-in at the counters.
  • Passengers who purchased extra seats can bring a boarding pass for the selected seat. No boarding pass is issued for the extra seat.

I have had the email twice. I also noticed during the booking process that it offers you the extra seat. The price was something like 60-90% the standard price. For example a promotional fare from LHR-IST is £148 with the extra seat at £95.90 and a flexible H fare of £388 gets an extra for £335.90.

If TK are flying around aircraft that are only half full at the moment then I suppose it makes sense to sell the empties to the remaining passengers.

Shame. That might have made it worthwhile!

Add on, The price of the extra seat is the base fare + the fuel surcharge.
In other words, it's technically double the price of a single seat minus taxes & fees.

The old, unpromoted, way seemed much cheaper: maybe it was base fare only. i used it to get an empty seat between us when travelling with friend with a broken leg. Sadly the empty seat got shifted - some clever work was required at check-in to ge it sorted out.

I wonder if we can get double meals with the extra seat? I feel like yes because it's paid for!

Anyone have experience with this? What happens if someone sees the empty seat and decides to sit in it or put their things in it, do you have to actively defend it?
