Expiring miles

Hi,

I'm looking for ideas of what to do with 50K expiring miles in my account and 30K expiring miles in my wife's account.

I'm wondering about booking an award flight in business for, say, June 2020 and then cancelling it in the new year. Would that get the points re-deposited back into my account?

50K expiring miles would cost me $500 to extend for 3 years. Not sure that is worth it to me for an airline where it is so hard to use those miles.

Thanks for any advice.

Things I have tried:
  • I tried booking a flight on United business earlier this year, and after e-mailing and calling sales offices and being told "no", I gave up after about 5 attempts.
  • I tried booking Vancouver - Istanbul on TK metal but I guess that option is not running yet.
  • I don't have any Star Alliance flights flights I can upgrade via a companion ticket.

You could use the miles to spend them in the M&S shop -even the things offered are not that great, better than not using the miles at all.

OR

You let them expire and in case in 2020 you find any availability you can reactivate as many miles you need for USD 10/1,000 miles (thatís what I will do, itís better this way than paying money in advance for miles you might not be able to use anyway plus I assume you have a later expiry date for those miles if you reactivate them in 2020 instead of extending them in 2019). But you can do this only for the previous year (until End of 2020 for miles expired in 2019).

Miles used for awards will not be credited back if you cancel the flight.

Try again book UA flights first through website then through calling sales. Create a family account to combine miles. If possible use credit card/hotel program transfer to obtain more 10000 miles to book two one ways or one round-trip from Canada to Europe.

Family accounts are not available for Classic M&S accounts.
