Status of electronics ban?
Hello
I have return flights booked with TK from MAN to AMM via IST, and have a question regarding the electronics ban that was imposed last year. When I did the same flights in June 2017, I wasn't permitted to take a portable hard drive in my hand luggage on the return flights (handed over at the gate at IST for the IST-MAN flight, to be picked up at MAN). The UK ban on bulky electronics was well publicised and Turkish Airlines did specifically mention it in the booking confirmation and on the website (I'd just completely forgotten it would also apply to a portable HDD). However, this year it seems much more ambiguous. The government's advice here implies that it does seem I will be affected again this year (due to flying out of AMM on the return, and then IST): https://www.gov.uk/government/news/c...ation-security There is no mention of it though on TK's website, or on my booking confirmation. The government's web page does state to contact the airline, all though I'm dreading having to get in touch with TK's customer services and there doesn't seem to be an email option. Does anyone know what exactly the current state of affairs is with this? Thanks! |
I thought only BA still had that ban in place for the BA flight(s?) out of IST. TK lifted it on all routes at some point. EDIT: turns out I’ve only flown TK OUT of the UK a few times last year, so I don’t actually know, sorry. The Independent says ban lifted for TK |
Only BA has the ban.

That's great, thanks for the feedback guys!
Out of interest, why is it operator-specific? Surely it is the airport that is responsible for security arrangements, which shouldn't differ between airlines? Or is this a case of something involving BA's own risk assessment being different to TK's, and not being down to government rules? |
Officially its BA's risk assessment. The reality is that they either do not want to spend the additional money that they need to, or no one in London cares or is paying attention.

Airlines that have been excluded are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Atlas, Thomas Cook, and Easyjet. The end result is basically the same in that I think BA is the only one that is still affected. |
Thanks again everyone.
Just to confirm, given my trip actually starts with an AMM-IST leg before the flight to MAN on the return, will I still be able to carry electronics? Just concerned as Jordan is obviously one of the countries on the ban list. I did find the following page, which seems to indicate there is still a ban? Although I'm not sure it is not simply out of date: https://www.turkishairlines.com/en-u...hts/index.html (Found using the search tool in the help section.) |
Your flight from AMM to IST is fine regardless of the airline, as the ban only affects direct flights to the UK, and obviously this isn't a direct flight to the US!
Your IST to MAN flight is as mentioned above - electronics ARE allowed on all airlines except BA. |
Excellent, thanks!
