IST-SYD Upgrade Possible?
The TK calculator do not return the mileage amount to upgrade for this route. If I look at flight details for the route, TK uses Singapore Airlines / Thai Airways or Qantas to transfer either in SIN or BKK. Looks like Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines flights to SYD are code-share? As the code starts with TK. Qantas seems it is not, it starts with QF.
Long story short, can I buy a IST-SYD ticket from TK and upgrade? or I need to buy separate tickets ie. IST-BKK & BKK-SYD (THAI) and upgrade those separately (Far away from ideal)
Thanks!!!

The upgrade path is a difficult one in your case:
1. You can upgrade only on *A flight.
2. On *A flight that is not TK, you can upgrade only from a booking class of B or Y so a Y ticket is going to be expansive, sometimes, even more than a discounted J.
3. You cannot upgrade codeshare flights.
I would go with trying to get an award ticket instead:
1. Use United, Aeroplan & ANA websites to find availability. You can search the whole itinerary or even one leg at a time.
2. With TK, you cannot mix different classes per direction (either economy or business all the way IST-SYD).
3. With TK, you cannon have more than one additional *A carrier in addition to TK.
4. It’s the same amount of miles if you upgrade or get an award ticket but availability of award tickets is usually more limited.
5. You most probably won’t find J award with SQ so most probably you can go with TG but you may also find other routes.
