Yet another attack..

Any idea how this is going to affect TK operations? I have a bunch of flights coming up in the next few months and I need to know whether to switch to ET + SN for a while.

Not sure why you think a terrorist attack near the Besiktas stadium should have an impact on Turkish Airway's operations.

Because a bunch of my travel is to the US, and the last time there was a terrorist attack in Istanbul (albeit it was in the airport) all flights from Istanbul into the USA were cancelled for a few days.

There are so many reasons to avoid TK these days, so I am surprised that an attack far away from the airport raises the question about flying TK, but terrible IRROPS handling and systematic safety issues are not, for example:

I would avoid TK at all costs these days, period.

Flights were AFAIK suspended as the airport security was suspected to be compromised.

It certainly will. Just not in the sense OP thinks. With the new attack passenger numbers to Turkey are set to lower even further. That spells bad news for Turkish and their load factors are probably going to suffer.

in six-months i'm scheduled to fly on TK from MIA-IST-BKK in Business Class with my wife and seven year old. I now have the option to fly on Swiss Business Class via Zurich. Should I reconsider?

Yes but not because of new attacks. Swiss business class is very nice.

Swiss is safe, reliable and you and your family will be taken good care in case of IRROPS.

Turkish is not safe and good luck if you get stranded in Instabul

TK J is very nice but I will second what AntonS said, especially when traveling with kids, in case of IRROPS would you rather TK LX looking after your welfare? TK does not have the best track record in this regard.

To be fair, neither does LX. LH Group carriers have been infuriatingly inflexible during IRROPS in my experience.

If TK was unsafe it simply would not be allowed to fly into the EU. They have banned some Turkish airlines before. I doubt also LH would want to do a joint venture with them. I I believe TK have had fewer accidents in recent years to AF.

It is a pity that some people have turned a thread about the cowardly terrorist attack which has murdered 29 people into a attack on TK, surely a more appropriate place?

+1. If the EU certifies it as safe to fly then I have no reason to believe it's not safe.

Obviously the risk of terrorism affecting TK is another matter but yesterday's incident changes little in that regard.

It seems AntonS has some kind of personal vendetta against TK, I'm not sure why.

Swiss and big-brother Lufthansa can take good care of you in IRROPS. But such treatment is a very long way from guaranteed. I was stranded for two days in Houston - and believe me, I'd far prefer to be stuck in Istanbul than Houston :)

That is an extraordinary statement: it is not supported by EASA, the European air safety organisation. Of course, things might change, but for the moment you will forgive me giving more credence to that organisation than to your personal opinions.

To answer the OP, the Besiktas attack should have no effect on TK operations.

flyer121, generally I would say stay with TK, they generally have twice the number of BKK flights as Swiss, not to mention they fly to more US destinations than Swiss, all of which actually gives you more irrops options.

Regarding what some have said above, again it depends on what sort of Irrops one is speaking of. If you are talking about a one off disruption, i.e. your plane goes Tech, small weather problem, etc, TK probably will do a better job than Swiss in dealing with you. If you are talking a major event such as weather that effects most or all flights, in my experience Swiss might be a bit better than TK (although in my experience not LH, as icing sugar on the runway in FRA seemed to have frozen the airline as well last time I got stuck with them).

If you are talking about something super major like a multiple suicide bomber attack on the airport or a military coup, these people are saying that Swiss would be better than TK. They are probably right in the case of the coup, mainly because it is very unlikely that Switzerland will have an attempted coup anytime soon. However regarding bombings, BRU was far worse than IST at handling their attack, so who knows how any specific airline or hub will react. The fact of the matter is that although there was a lot of individual grumbling at TK for Jun 28 and Jul 15, I think they did an excellent job all things considered.

The only IROP situation, I had with TK during the last 3 years was in BKK and a local TK Station Manager took a good care of me. It was probably the only time I saw that E+ membership matters.

+1

IRROPS is the biggest value of E+ in my experience too.
