Smile Post your recent Operational Upgrade as Miles&Smiles Elite Plus/Elite/Classic Plus

Turkish Airlines is generally known for frequently overbooking flights, and as a result op-ups tend to happen quite often. Thanks to their generous upgrade policy where status trumps booking class, the chances of scoring an upgrade as Elite/E+ are fairly high even if you're flying on a cheap fare.

Feel free to share your recent op-ups on Turkish Airlines and other Star Alliance airlines. Use the template as shown below.

Here are a few of my recent op-ups.

Airline: Turkish Airlines
Route: TK1955 Istanbul – Amsterdam
Booked cabin: Economy Class
Upgraded cabin: Business Class 1F
Number of passengers: 1
Date: December 2013
Miles&Smiles level: Elite
Booking class: W

Airline: Swiss International Air Lines
Route: LX1232 Geneva – Stockholm
Booked cabin: Economy Class 3A
Upgraded cabin: Business Class 1F
Number of passengers: 1
Date: March 2014
Miles&Smiles level: TK*G
Booking class: K

Airline: Turkish Airlines
Route: TK1796 Stockholm – Istanbul
Booked cabin: Economy Class 14A
Upgraded cabin: Business Class 4A
Number of passengers: 1
Date: March 2014
Miles&Smiles level: Elite
Booking class: W

2011, 2012, and 2013 I got an upgrade on every single flight in the months of June, July and August between Istanbul and Germany / Switzerland.

Everytime I was already in my seat when another passenger showed up with a BP for the same seat. The FAs took both BPs, came back with the handwritten new seat number in C.

I found my some op-ups on my DB but I upgraded several times on IST-ANK-IST route even I was Classic-Plus (TK*S) only, 6-7 years ago. But almost it is not possible in these days on that route because there are many more people who wait in CIP Lounge than people who wait in Economy gate.

Got an op-up the other day, though as I changed my M&S number to another programme at the lounge, I'm not too sure if it still qualifies but I'd share it anyway

Airline: Scandinavian Airlines SAS
Route: SK2679 ARN-TXL
Booked Cabin: SAS GO / Economy
Upgraded Cabin: SAS PLUS / Premium Economy
Number of passengers: 1
Miles&Smiles level: Elite. Though I changed to a different FFP as it would earn me more miles.
Booking class: O (the cheapest one)

Flight was oversold so I volonteered for a VDB. I was told to wait at the gate until the last person had boarded. Got the red light and a new seat assignment. Normally upgrades are hard to come by on SAS since each flight carries a couple of dozen SAS Gold/Diamond passengers so it was a nice surprise.

Received new boarding passes at the gate:

Airline: Turkish Airlines
Route: TK1374 Rotterdam – Istanbul
Booked cabin: Economy Class
Upgraded cabin: Business Class 1D + 1F
Number of passengers: 2
Date: May 2014
Miles&Smiles level: Elite (both)
Booking class: W

Unfortunately it was the old A320, so no business class seats, but the ordinary economy seats (C class catering though). Would have been even better if we'd been upgraded on the onward red-eye flight (new 737-800 with C class seats), but you can't have it all I guess...

On the return Istanbul-Rotterdam flight there were no C class passengers at all. The Y-style seats in C class were all used (including the middle seats) for Y passengers; with Y class catering.

You are very lucky to get upgrades on the IST-ANK-IST route since TK favors high ranking government officials over passengers with status. This policy has never been published officially but rather a long serving tradition of the airline. IST-ANK flights are usually filled with bureaucrats which make it almost impossible to get those upgrades.

Yeah, you're right.

I upgraded that route too many times but this was years and years ago when i flew on that route 6-8 times per week.

Now! It's not possible unless overbooking.

Booked one way Comfort class booking LAX-IST-RIX in O and Y. Was upgraded at the gate IST-RIX. Noticed one more upgraded non-status no M&S pax on the same route, same booking classes.

It's kinda sad that TK op-ups Y booking class pax rather than own elites.

Why is that? They upgraded you as en Elite Plus member, and if there are no other Elite members onboard the flight they'd probably pick whoever suits the bill at the moment. There are quite few M&S Elites on each flight I have noticed.
The chance of being upgraded when traveling solo is the highest, as opposed if you're traveling with your family. Then they'll probably pick a non-status solo pax, over a status customer with multiple members in his travel party.

Does anyone know if the upgrades are generated by the system(at close of checkin) or do staff take it upon themselves doing it manually?

According to the station manager at ARN a list is generated, based on status, booking class etc, from which they will select the candidates.
