This is not what the immigration office told me. I received the slip without the x. But he said I was required to hand it to him (or show it to hom, I don't recall exactly) before proceeding to the baggage area. That's what I'm wondering about. The immigration officer is otherwise engaged at LAX and I'm supposed to walk up to him while he's with someone else? I recall it feeling aggressive on my part when I last did it. Is that the proper way?

Just used GE for 1st time!!
Just returned from International Vacation and used GE for 1st time in IAH..
Walked into immigration and Kiosks for GE were clearly marked, with about 10 or more kiosks...easy to use and finished in 2 minutes or less...CBP is stationed at kiosks and asked if I had baggage or not.. Longest time was waiting for my luggage...but then the dedicated Customs line for GE was easily marked also, and a few lines were not happy I could just walk right up, but oh we'll...:D Thing that sucked was I had TSA precheck on my connecting flight but security line had no Fastrack lanes for this...so had to wait in long ... line... Glad I joined though.. |
Made another short Amsterdam trip (about 7 hours) this week. First time clearing with GE in MSP. As we had the late arrival, there was nobody in Customs, so it wasn't really a benefit in that regard.
No issues with the short stay in Amsterdam at all. Was traveling with 4 coworkers. Guy laughed at us because of how short the trip was. So coming back from AMS I'm 2/2 in MSP with no hassle. 0/2 in DTW, secondaries both times. |
Two things:
1) I am 2/2 this year with getting the X. My wife got through both times. The customs officer at the exit lane mentioned something about biometrics. My passport wasn't reading properly this time, so I had to enter the document number manually. Perhaps that's what set it off. Either that or I'm getting the random X every time. No issues however since CBP officers were on hand to clear the X right near the kiosks. ^ 2) I've noticed the questions are back to matching the blue customs declaration form, including the question about food. I remember this had changed back in late 2010 or early 2011 because too many people were getting and X for saying yes to "food" just because they had a pack of gum or something. I was always super careful about bringing back food until this question changed as I didn't want to get delayed. It was a relief when they changed the wording to only include those things that would be subject to an agricultural inspection, but it's unfortunate that the wording got changed back to what it was. I guess we'll have to go back to selecting yes to bringing back snacks and getting the rolling eyes from the CBP officer rather than risk the stickler who chastises you for not declaring your container of Tic Tacs as food. :( |
My first time to use GE.
Flew into IAD from MUC late May. Since we had to sit forever on the mobile lounge, my bag was already on the carousel. Total time to go thru the whole process was under 5 mins. Thank you GE! & Amex Platinum for paying for it! :D |
Hold still and grease your fingers.
The X's are due to biometric failure or a damaged RFID (if you have one) or OCR failure of an old passport.
Make sure to remove your eye-wear and look directly into the camera. Before you do your fingerprints wipe your fingers across your forehead, you get better print recognition on the scanner, make sure to look at the fingerprint scan to see how well you are doing with the reading and vary the pressure to get optimum recognition. The first time I used GE I put my passport the wrong side up, so I got an X, it could be as easy as that. I've been through GE now about 30 times and that 1st time has been my only "X" Steve

Update for Dutch citizens using Global Entry
Hi all,
As a Dutch citizen, I enrolled in Global Entry in 2009. Of course, renewal time is coming up. I started some digging in the spring, and was told they did not know how the process would work yet. They did confirm my expiration date as being August 2014. I contacted them again last week, and was told that since US Immigration has yet to figure out how to process the renewal of Dutch GE members, they have extended everyone's renewal date to 31 January 2015. (As far as I am concerned, they can continue figuring it out as long as they want :D ) If you want to check whether your renewal date has been updated as well, you can send an email to: info [at] flux-alliance.eu They will provide you with a guide to setting up your GOES account, which will then allow you to check on your expiry date. Cheers, GenevaFlyer |
Need suggestions... I am a Canadian living, not in Canada. I would like to enroll in Global Entry as Nexas would require I actually go back to Canada for the interview.
Am I SOL? I do not have much control over my route. It would be near impossible to have a layover in one of the interview airports. I count myself lucky my company books my preferred airline. |

Just applied lAST WEEK--GOT CONditional approval-yay! cant get interview until late september!! grr!!
|
Applied for GE on Saturday and got conditionally approved Monday morning! I scheduled my interview for next week. One question though, if I get approved, do I immediately get a known traveler ID? I ask because I have a flight next Friday, and would like to use TSA pre if possible. And does TSA pre apply to all airlines? I mainly fly UA/DL domestic, but am interested in Southwest/Airtran and Jetblue as well. Also, when I use TSA pre lanes, what documentation do I need to present as proof that I have GE/TSA pre?

Yes, it does work on all Pre-enabled airlines, including UA, DL, WN and B6. Not all airlines are Pre-enabled, mainly foreign airlines. The only documentation you need is your boarding pass that has "TSA Pre" on it. You can use your Global Entry card as ID at all TSA checkpoints, but it alone will not get you into the Pre line. |
Thank you dustman for the answer, very informative. How do I find out what my KTN is? And what can I expect from the GE interview?
