Speaking of issuing Nexus cards, I still haven't recieved my new one yet. Wondering if I should just log on to GOES and request a replacement, at least after I complete my next trip in early Feb. Can't imagine why after at least a year of delays for the new cards, they are taking so long to distribute them. Of course, I suppose just being government could be the reason?

The NEXUS web site says to push the panic button if you don't receive the card by March 1st.

Thanks for the clarification! Hmm, I guess since the customs area is Canadian territory after all, then a same-sex married couple should still be technically considered married for all intents and purposes at that customs location, although that federal recognition would stop once you fly into U.S. airspace...

Well, no, I'd disagree with your "for all intents and purposes" since the purpose of the pre-clearance function within that area is to verify a person's admissibility into the US in accordance with US law. Canadian recognition doesn't stop, it just doesn't have any jurisdiction in the USA.

My card came today by regular mail from "BLAINE (PACIFIC HWY), WA". The envelope says "NEXUS, Official Business, Penalty for Private Use $300". Doesn't that just scream "Identity theft?"

Anyways, for those that keep track it was issued 11 DEC 2008.

You're correct. There are exemptions to the Canadian laws that allow a pre-clearance officer to deny someone entry, and someone doesn't have recourse through Canadian courts. Otherwise, anything that happens in the pre-clearance area is subject to Canadian law and redress via Canadian courts.

I got my pre-approval in about a week and schedule my interview about a week after that. Now just waiting for the card. Going on a week now.

Excellent, thanks! How was the interview?

Very cazh. Was asked questions relating to my job, why I was applying, and if I was a criminal. First by the Canadian guy and then the US guy. Then they showed me the machine. I took about 20 minutes. It was professional and courteous. He put it quite plainly, this program is based on trust. You breach the trust and you're done. Makes sense to me.

Note: my DL has my middle name whereas my passport doesn't so they needed to see my birth cert, which I luckily had in my wallet...I hadn't purposefully brought it because it wasn't specified in the required docs. Don't know what would have happened it I didn't have it.

I also found out that children are free. So I have been harrassing my wife to get it done. $100 bucks for 5 years for the three of us makes a lot of sense to me. Would have saved me 3 hours this summer crossing by car!

I also got my "new" NEXUS card today... look nice.

For what it's worth, I just got my copy of Newsweek in the mail today.

Inside the back cover is a full-page ad for the border-crossing programs. At quick glance, it looks more like an ad for NEXUS, complete with the new NEXUS card.

Those sooner-than-later available interview slots are probably going to become more and more scarce.

Perhaps this is why I got pre approved in less than four days, meanwhile my husband who applied two weeks after me, is still " Pending Review" which has been saying that for over a week now.

Just got my new Nexus card today in Cincinati (regular mail), and had no problems activating it, it takes just seconds. Came from Whirlpool Bridge, in case anyone is interested.

Interestingly enough, my pass ID was available through the window of the envelope above my name on the letter. Also, I found it interesting that the envelop has a line saying "Official Business Penalty for Private use of $300." Am trying to figure out what that is all about.

Also noticed that the text is much smaller on the card, particularly on the back. Apparently, they're making it harder to read for me or any customs officer that ask for it, but easy for any lowly postal worker to get my pass ID and info. Strange. Good timing though, I will get the chance to use it tomorrow. Am hoping the new card will scan at the UA Chicken at CVG, the old cards definitely didn't.

Used the new card at the western most crossing southbound today. The digital LED number thing changes from 0 to 1 so presumably the readers will now count the number of cards.

Also went into the local Nexus office and can confirm that one can no longer let non-Nexus travellers off before the border and have them walk across to clear. It's a lose-your-card infringement now.

We were told this at the Blaine office a year and a half ago - it was part of the interview wrap up along with other assorted warnings.
