Applying for TSA PreCheck While Awaiting Approval of Global Entry

Since there is no rhyme or reason to how long Global Entry Conditional Approval will take at this time, does anyone know if I can just pay the extra $85 Fee and submit a "separate" Application for TSA PreCheck ONLY as I wait possibly many months for GE Conditional Approval?

The reason I ask is because I will have US domestic travel in the next couple of months and would like to at least have TSA PreCheck. Also, I have multiple credit cards that will cover the Fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. NOTE: I have already submitted my App and $100 Fee for GE and it is looking like it may be a long wait for Conditional Approval of this Initial Application. I would, of course, use a different Credit Card for the TSA PreCheck Fee (to receive reimbursement for that fee in addition to the GE fee). Has anyone else done this and been successful in obtaining TSA PreCheck while awaiting approval of Global Entry by submitting 2 completely separate applications and application fees?

Yes, those are separate programs run by separate agencies.

There is relevant information in the following thread:

Thank You, TWA884 !!!

Following your response, I did apply for TSA PreCheck separately on 9/15/22 (Appt/Fingerprints on 9/17/22) and have received Approval (Online but No Text) and the Eligibility Determination Letter as well as my KTN on 9/20/22 (via Email even though I requested Text Communication Only) while I await Conditional Approval for Global Entry (App Submitted on 8/20/22). I have also already received both Statement Credits for the two fees ($100 for GE and $85 for TSA on separate credit cards). I'm all set for now and hopefully GE will come through before I have any International Travel.

Thanks again :)

P.S. - Per most of the recommendations in the thread you provided, I will use my TSA KTN until (at some point) I "presumably" receive my GE KTN. At that time, I will update all accounts with my GE KTN, allow my TSA KTN to expire, and only renew my GE KTN thereafter.

Hope all this info helps someone else.

Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

Hi all.
Was not sure exactly where to post this so forgive me and please move it to the correct forum.

I found out, the hard way, that my global entry expired 2 weeks ago! :(
I now have renewed the application but did not realize that the government is asking people to sign up for Pre TSA if you are not travelling internationally any time soon - and I also just did that and have an enroll appointment for next week for fingerprinting etc...
However reading further, they say if you apply for global entry, then you don't need to apply for Pre TSA. EEK!

I now reside in the US, moved here 8 years ago and around 5 years ago applied for global entry which gave me PreTSA but they sent no reminders that the membership is coming to an end. It was recently my birthday and it expired then! Plus I have a few upcoming trips around the country and it is not pulling the PreTSA... now I know why :(

I also had surgery 2 weeks ago so... this makes it difficult (as I am experiencing) going through the regular/CLEAR line as well since I need to unpack bag, take off shoes etc...

In any event, what will happen? I renewed the Global Entry and also applied for PreTSA separately. Will this cancel something out or cause some issue? I am concerned - not trying to commit some fraudulency...

I had Precheck first before I applied for Global Entry. The impact it'll have is that you'll double pay for the two programs, and you'll end up with two different KTNs. Given how long it takes for Global Entry interviews at the moment, I'm sure some people are getting Precheck in the short run because it's so much quicker while they wait for their Global Entry appointment.

In short: don't sweat it. :-)

Only issue is that you've wasted $85. No refunds are allowed of application fee.

I am ok with that but what about the 2 applications?
1 is global entry renewal
1 is pre tsa

Doesn’t matter. Many people have both active for various reasons.

Just an update...
they approved the renewal of the global entry within 2 days.

Missed my GE renewal - should I apply for PreCheck too?

When I checked in for a flight I got a message I didn't get pre-check and realized my GE expired a few days ago. My trusted traveler account was tied to a previous job email and I missed reminder to renew . The CBP site says it's an average 4 - 6 month wait.

Should I apply for PreCheck separately? I don't know if my GE application will move quicker since I'm renewing or if I'm stuck at the end of the queue. I really don't want to not have pre-check for 6 months.

If you have a credit card which reimburses TSA PreCheck application fee, then apply immediately. If your GE renewal is not approved by end of two weeks, then apply TSA PreCheck.

In the future, mark your calendar to renew 364 days before expiration.

Since it expired, you are at back of the line. It may be a bit quicker in that you previously had been approved. However you don't skip over other new applications.

I would apply for Precheck, especially if have a card or benefit at work covers cost.

There are several recent reports in the Global Entry renewal thread by members who applied for renewal after the original expiration date of their memberships and received final approval of their renewal applications, without the need for an enrollment interview, within a couple of days. On the other hand, I personally know a few late renewal applicants who have been waiting for six to nine months and have yet to get even a conditional approval.

I went ahead and applied for precheck since flying without Precheck was miserable. I dropped in for a walk-in appointment at the airport after I landed on Thursday and I got approval and my KTN on Friday morning. My GE application is still waiting for conditional approval and one of my colleagues said his wife is in similar boat as me and she applied in Feb and is still waiting for conditional approval.
