YYZ to USA, Access NEXUS/GE Area without Proof?

Just went through Toronto this past week.
Interesting that they routed all GE people to the NEXUS/GE area (down the hallway). No proof required for GE or, in my case, NEXUS.
Honestly anyone could have done it - because after Canadian screening (or more like it, just bag screening and metal detector), you could go back to "normal" (non-GE) for USA customs/immigration.

So odd.

(Last time was ugly - CBCA border agent demanded seeing my Global Entry CARD)

Interesting. Just did the same thing yesterday and it was the first time that no one asked to see my NEXUS card and I did notice that you could go to normal or GE for U.S. Customs after having your luggage scanned. Also, no tablet removal from luggage required which has always been the opposite on previous trips.

For me I was required to remove my laptop (MacBook) out of my bag and neoprene sleeve, but (as you noted) no tablet.
Even though Toronto has the older scanners, it appears that they have more displays to look at top/side/etc of bags at the same time.
