Global Entry / NEXUS Citizenship Update Procedure

Hi there,

I am having the honor of becoming a US citizen.

Now, my Global Entry is issued under my Green Card as permanent resident.

Would anyone know if I need to reapply for this status change in the GE program from scratch or if this is merely a change, which can be done through a walk-in or appointment at the GE office at the airport?

I don't dare to ask if this status change can even be done online via my GOES account without any human interaction?

Any info is appreciated.

Global Entry status change from Green Card to US Passport

Congrats!
You just go in(no appointment needed) and have your info updated.takes about 3 minutes...
They'll leave both passport infos in the system in case you're keeping your other citizenship too.

Excellent, thank you for the info and thanks for the congrats - long progress and exciting outcome

Yes, I am keeping my other citizenship as well and I am glad to hear that there are no issues to keep it that way.

Will the change after the walk-in be with immediate effect?

I am travelling internationally end of August and would love to use the GE Kiosk at return using my passport instead of going through the long lines.

Thanks again.

As immediate as any .gov system can be. Went through the same process and came back 4 days afterwards on US passport through GE without any issues.

Great, thank you.

I have an international flight coming up with a return of 2 weeks after departure. Might try to change the status at time of departure if the processing only takes a few days.

I assume that the confirmation of status change is visible in the GOES online account, once the new passport shows up there?

Quick update:

I simply walked into the processing center at LAX without appointment.

The officer was extremely nice and firstly congratulated me for obtaining the US citizenship (which was very nice!).

He then swiped my new passport, hacked something into the system and after about 2 minutes told me that all done and I am good to travel.

I checked my GOES account once home and my passport credentials are all accurately inserted into my profile.

Seamless process

PHysical Card still says old citizenship

Does anyone have any experiences on traveling by land using the old global entry card that has the old citizenship?

1. I used to be a green card, now US citizen
2. visited the GE office to have the citizenship updated
3. have flown into the US using new passport several times no problem

But now I want to travel by land from canada, it looks like I get to use the nexus lanes, but the physical GE card still has my old citizenship on it. GOES is updated with my US passport however.

Does anyone know if I'll need to request a replacement card? If so what do i select on GOES, just that it's 'damanged'?

Will I have any issues going through nexus lane using the old card that still says i'm a citizen of another country?

Thanks

I don't have any direct experience with this, but you can have multiple valid passports (and thus citizenships) listed on your GE account, so I don't think that it would be a problem.

Nexus Lane

Ok trip report for anyone's physical card that is outdated but GOES is updated.

I got questioned [at the booth, not secondary] on why the card didn't match the GOES info they pulled up on the screen. I answered that i naturalized recently and all was fine.

I asked if I needed a new card to prevent confusion, and it seems it's not strictly necessary, but I expect they'll ask what happened every time I do it. Thus lengthening the nexus lane experience from 1 to 2 minutes while the conversation is happening.

LPR to Citizen - Proper Global Entry / NEXUS Update Procedure

Had an issue with this, so not sure if someone else can comment on what should be done at this point.

My wife is a Nexus member, and has GE through that. She has always been a Canadian citizen, and has been an LPR since ~2012. Never had an issue - she uses her greencard in the GE machine and goes through no issues.

She recently became a US citizen, and received her new passport. As she is supposed to do, she want to the Nexus office (at YYZ, if it matters) to update the info. She sat at a desk, where they have a Canadian and US official there. We were leaving on a flight shortly after, and they assured her the system should be updated instantly, and she'd be able to cross at pre-clearance no issues. She also has her Nexus card taken away, and gets told she needs to renew (hers expires at end of April, but was told if she wasn't, she needed a new card anyway because an American citizen can't have "Canadian" listed as their primary citizenship). Not a big deal, I guess.

So of course, at the kiosk, she scans her US passport, and gets a message - don't remember exactly what it is, but a big "we're sorry" and then something about being a lawful permanent resident. She has to fill out a form as she sees the customs guy - no one's sure exactly what's going on. I have a theory...but anyway.

We log into GOES, and see her passport is entered, but her LPR card info is also still there (in update documents section). I suspected this was the case given the message she got on the machine. We call the Chicago office, since that's where we are (but are in domestic terminal making a connection, so didn't want ot go to T5), and he says we have to go to a Nexus office and have them update the status. We explain we just tried to do that, but apparently, something wasn't done.

So, I'm not sure what the next step should be. Do we actually need to go back to a Nexus office (in person) to have this taken care of, or since it seems to be an issue on the GOES side of things, should a GE office be able to take care of it. Either way, can this be done over the phone (since we already did what was required by doing this in person at a Nexus office)? Is it potentially just the system being delayed? Or is there something else that needs to be done?

Anyone who has been through this kind of transition and can offer advice would be greatly appreciated. Right now, one potential thought is to just do the renewal online, and forget about the LPR info. currently in there, hoping that by excluding it in the renewal (since it doesn't exist any longer), and having her US citizenship info. in there, it will overwrite what is currently in there about her LPR status. Or if not, that she will probably need an interview anyway due to the status change, and to bring it up there so she isn't flagged as an LPR going forward.

I'm in a similar predicament. I was naturalized last year so I went to the Nexus office at YVR to have my US passport added. It was handled by the officer at the check-in though; I didn't have to go in and talk to the ones who do the interviews. He made a photocopy of my documents but did not take my Nexus card (perhaps because it doesn't need to be renewed until 2020). When I tried to use it at a Nexus kiosk, there was a message about "document expired". The US passport worked though. When I got home and logged into GOES, I saw that my permanent resident card was still listed as an "Admissibility Document"; it expired last July although I had already turned it in at the naturalization ceremony. Both my Canadian and US passports are listed in the Citizenship information section, with the US one listed as "Citizenship that you will declare when entering the United States".

I have not yet resolved this issue but here's what I've done so far:
  • Called the number for "Updating US passport with Canada for Nexus" listed in the Nexus information thread wiki. The person I spoke with (from Canada Border Services) said that that I would have to contact someone on the US side to have the permanent resident info removed from GOES. Fortunately, the automated greeting on that number included a phone number for GOES issues.
  • I called the phone number for GOES. After waiting for over 1.5 hours, when they picked up my call, the line went dead! If you want to try calling them, the number is 855-873-4637. Call early in the day to get into the queue; as the day goes on, you'll just get a fast busy signal. They are only open until 4:30 pm ET.
  • After that exercise in frustration, I've decided to try emailing my question at this site: https://help.cbp.gov/app/ask. I had to create an account and I think I have to log back into the account to see the answer. I don't expect to see anything for at least a couple of weeks. I may try calling the GOES number again once I get over how annoyed and frustrated I am from my previous experience.

The next time that you are near LAX, you may want to stop by the Global Entry Enrollment Center at TBIT and ask them to update your documents. I know several people who had their passport information updated there that way; no appointment was necessary.

I think the issue is on the US side, for sure. Though the guy at the ORD office that i talked to on the phone insisted it needed to be done at a NEXUS office.

My understanding of GOES is that the documents listed on the manage membership section are always what was listed on your last application/enrollment. And only those that appear in the update documents section change with updates.

My wife was told specifically that Nexus would no longer work into Canada because you can not have "Canadian" listed on your card as an American - that US has to be your 'primary' citizenship. Being so close to renewal, that's what they said to proceed with, but it was made clear to my wife that even if she wasn't close, she would have to request a replacement card - no point with three months left on the membership (and no plans for Canada travel within that time).

I guess we'll have to see how this GOES (haha!) - I may try and call the GOES help line as well to see if they can do anything.

Following up to say that the above suggestion was spot on. CBP responded to my email to say that I needed to go to an enrollment center to update my account. They also said that, after my account was updated, I needed to order a replacement card through GOES.

I went to the Global Entry Enrollment Center at LAX today and the person at the check-in counter updated my account. When I logged into GOES later, my account no longer said "Document Expired" and the permanent resident card had been removed. Although both passports are listed in the Citizenship section, I was a little concerned because only my Canadian passport is listed in the "Admissibility Documents" section. Previously, it included my permanent resident card so I thought a US document would be needed in that section as well. However, I've already been approved for the replacement card so I guess it's OK.

What is LPR? Legal permanent resident? If so, when did the L come into use. <deleted by moderator>.
