Known traveler did not get PreCheck on AA transcon
I have had Global Entry for about 2 years, first time in about 100 domestic flights that Pre Check was not printed on my BP. Flying SAN-MIA-MBJ, thought it was odd that the website would not allow me to print a BP during check in, did not pay too much attention as we were checking a bag, first realized when my BP did not return the familiar 3 beeps when scanned by TSA. Agents suggested that there is no guarantee to receive PreCheck for every flight !?!

What the agents said doesn't sound right to me... When I fist had global entry I had a couple boarding passes print without the pre-check designation... Went to the Elite/first class check in counter and had them manually enter my KTN. No further problem...

TSA incorporates unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no passenger is guaranteed expedited screening.

For international trips where online check-in is inhibited for one reason or another, the chances of getting PreCheck LLL tend to be lower. But a way to sort of improve the outcome is for the agent to uncheck you in and then manually update the KTN field properly and then recheck the passenger in. This workaround doesn't always work but it works sometimes.

While the agent was, in theory correct, I would not accept that until you have had one go around in which a counter agent removes, reenters your KTN and reprints your BP.
This will almost always work. Once in a blue moon it won't and when it doesn't, you really have been randomly deselected (not selected as the case may be).

Precheck is a purchased privilege.
I stopped by the Precheck office at a local airport. No one was in, but there was a podium with information about Precheck.
FRONT page, 2nd to 3rd paragraph which was bolded, indicated Precheck is not guaranteed.

My husband and I both have Global Entry. Sporadically, one of us will get precheck and the other will not. It's annoying. The unpredictability is part of the security system. Our United travels are particularly bad if we have booked both tickets from one account. The antiquated UA IT only carries the Trusted Traveler information to the one whose account is booked from, even though both of us have Trusted Traveler numbers in our UA accounts. I've learned to book each ticket separately.

So now I'm confused... The program that I paid to be a member of (global entry) doesnt guarantee me pre-check? I signed up for global entry for the sole purpose of getting pre-check and decided to pay the extra 15 dollars for global entey

Even people who pay for PreCheck are not guaranteed to get PreCheck every time. Surely you can understand the logic of that. Having some level of unpredictability in the system is intended to ensure people don't try to sneak in items that could make it through PreCheck but not through the standard screening.

Both GE and Pre-Check have both random and selcted "deselection" criteria. Some really are truly random. Others are pretty obvious if you flip through some of the GE and Pre-Check threads on FT and elsewhere.
Bottom line is that they are fairly rare and the average traveler experiences somewhere close to 100%, if not, 100% selection. Usually when you don't get Pre-Check it's because there's a name match problem or your KTN is not properly entered.

My rate of missing Precheck on a flight is somewhere around 2% (3/160 or so) since I enrolled in GE and then NEXUS.
Two of those were due to a mistake in the way my KTN was entered to the PNR by my corporate TA on a round trip. We got that fixed for the next trip, but this unfortunately involved departing at ATL early in the morning.
The other was an itinerary where I went PHL-XXX/XXX-CLT-YYY/YYY-PHL, and it was on the CLT-YYY flight - after I had cleared using PreCheck in XXX. Note it was only on a single BP on that trip, my outbound from and inbound to PHL and the initial segment on the middle leg all had PreCheck on the BP and triple beeped.
PreCheck is not guaranteed even if your KTN is entered properly. Either this is your unlucky day or the KTN isn't entered properly.

Nothing guarantees you to get Precheck 100% of the time (not even signing up directly with the TSA). Just use the Pass ID number on the back of your GE card in the known traveler number field when making reservations. You can also add it to your FF profiles so you don't need to enter it each time.

Since you can only use one KTN at a time having more than one is basically useless and won't have any impact on you getting or not getting PreCheck.
