According to the TSA press release, while Norwegian Air and Icleandair are now participating PreCheck airlines, Via Airlines, a regional carrier, will not begin participating until November 1, 2018.

Is TSA pre-check and the KTN only used for domestic USA travel? Any reason to have it added for an international INBOUND Lufthansa itinerary? I called Lufty to try and add it for an upcoming flight, they acted as if I was speaking Greek. Said "I have no idea what a KTN (known traveler number) is"

yes it is only for US domestic and ex-USA international travel.

Only if you have a connection and want the PreCheck designation to appear on your boarding pass for the next flight.

SAS is a TSA PreCheck airline, and my KTN number is filled into my PNRs for SAS CPH/OSL/ARN-US flights. Whenever I do this for my one-way tickets -- and most of my travel is by one-way tickets -- and am to get TSA PreCheck for such trips, it has generally meant one or both of the following: one, I can't check-in at the kiosks (unlike when I don't enter my KTN for such one-way ticket US-bound SK flights); and two, I get waived for gate-/flight-waiting area-search for such SK flights to the US. When I can't check-in at the kiosks and am to get PreCheck on the boarding passes for the SK flights from Europe to the US, the check-in agents often claim it's because the US wanted to inhibit my check-in because of the one-way travel; and yet this only happens this year when I'm getting PreCheck on CPH-US flights on SK. Whether or not the SAS kiosks in say CPH are able to print out the PreCheck approval on boarding passes or not, there does seem to be a lack of familiarity by check-in reps and call center reps in Europe about the use of the KTN field and what it may mean in terms of PreCheck. But this really should not be surprising as the screening checkpoints at European airports don't have anything like a PreCheck program and thus agent knowledge about such stuff in practical terms would be limited.

Whether the gate-area screeners for LH US-bound flights pay attention to PreCheck notations or not is probably best asked of someone who flies LH to the US more frequently than I and does so under more common conditions from Germany to the US.

I haven't seen any US-bound passengers with a PreCheck boarding pass have an SSSS boarding pass. That may be a reason to want the KTN in the PNR for US-bound flights, even as plenty of GE members get SSSS on US-bound flights for one reason or another even with the KTN entered into the PNR.

Aer Lingus does NOT participate

Today, SFO International Terminal G, checked in via clear to be told that Aer Lingus EI doesn't participate in TSA pre. The wait wasn't too bad, about 5-7 minutes, but expect normal screening process (shoes off, empty pockets, no belt, laptops out, etc, etc). As already discussed here, having your global entry card doesn't get you access to TSA pre.

Is there a particular reason you though EI was a participating airline?

Flying Icelandair next week. Still no place in their online system to add the Trusted Traveler number. Anyone have any experience with this?

I was hoping to avoid that pain, if possible, by seeing if anyone else had done so.

Some participating foreign airlines, during an early implementation period for an airline, have had instances where the KTN field came up as an option into which to load data at time of check-in but not at prior points when using the airline’s online system to manage bookings purchased via an online travel agency or partner airline website.
