You can proactively initiate the renewal process before you get your expiration notification from DHS, which seem to be going out to your email address of record a few months prior to expiry.
You may reapply for Global Entry renewal as early as one year prior to your membership expiration date; your new GE expiration date will be five years from your next birthday.
The amount of time for approval of applications varies from as little as 1-2 days to as long as several months. The reason for this is unclear. Please be patient. If you renew before expiration, your GE benefits will continue until your renewal is approved/rejected, for up to 24 months after expiration.

Important:
1) If you allow your Global Entry status to expire, even by one day, you will need to submit a new application.
Contrary data points: three people (two of whom are minors) had their GE expire in July/August/October 2021. Renewed in March/April 2022 with full approval (no interview required) within 48 hours.
2) If you cancel a scheduled interview, your application will be canceled. So, instead of canceling an appointment date for the interview, just reschedule it.
Your Global Entry expiration date will show when you register and sign in to the new Trusted Traveler Program website https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/ If you can renew, you will see a white on blue "RENEW" radio button.
Reapplication requires filling out an application form essentially de novo, including listing citizenship or residency documents, whether your driver's license is EDL conforming, aliases or "AKAs", new jobs or address changes since application, all countries visited the last five years (the form sorts them alphabetically, and does not request date or year of visit) and payment of $100 (for five years of GE renewal).
Please don't forget some credit cards will give you credit for PreCheck application or renewal, $85, or for Global Entry etc. renewal, $100, every five years (Barclay Aviator Silver, Capital One Venture, Venture X, Chase CSR and JPM Reserve, AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, American Express Platinum, CNB Crystal, etc.) Interestingly, they may not cover NEXUS, which is $50 - and if you have NEXUS, your GE will be subsumed by NEXUS.
After one to a few weeks, you will likely receive an e-mail informing you action has been taken on your application; you will have to log in to your account to determine what that action has been.
Extension of current Global Entry:
If you submit a renewal application before expiration of your current membership, then you can continue to use your benefits until the renewal is finalized (up to 18 months after your expiration date).
Please note that according to the information the TTP website, the grace period has been extended to 24 months.
Decisions on your application:
1) You may be approved, with no further action on your part necessary; your GE will be extended five years from your next birthdate. For an example of an uncomplicated renewal without requiring an interview, see this post by mre5765.
2) You may receive conditional approval. To receive full approval you must complete the enrollment interview within 365 days of receiving the conditional approval. You still have a hoop or two to jump through.
3) You may have not been approved. See instructions on line to proceed; this information refers to reapplication, not how to appeal or reverse the denial.

The vetting process cannot be expedited. If you submitted a renewal application before expiration of your current membership, then you can continue to use your benefits until the renewal is finalized (up to 6 months after your expiration date). You should prepare for your appointment as if you were newly applying, with passport, naturalization certificate or whatever you're using to establish qualification as well as documents establishing residency (state driver's license, senior identification, etc.) you will also have your fingerprints and photograph taken.
Be sure to mention anything you've forgotten to list in your application form, and to disclose any incidents such as being arrested (not just if you were found guilty) or Driving Under the Influence - alcohol or any substance - AKA "DUIs" (some posting in this thread report they were asked if they'd been charged with DUI);,these folks access various data bases, at least one of which includes data going back to the 1950s. Some members in this forum have posted they had trouble or were initially denied for not mentioning those incidents, even juvenile records that should have been expunged.
If your reapplication is approved, you will generally be notified quickly.

Funny you should ask. I was looking at my wife's card and her expiration date is next year. If I recall correctly, we signed up at the same time. When I pulled out my card earlier in the month, I saw the card expired 6 weeks ago. A rookie mistake to be sure. After I thought about it, I realized that I got my card before she applied.

IIRC the expiration date depends on your birthday.

I applied for renewal on Feb. 10, a few days before the expiration of the current card, but with a new passport. Application is still pending.
My wife applied a couple of weeks ago and received her card yesterday. She has not traveled much over the past 2-3 years. I am a moderate traveler - 2-4 international trips per year, almost all to Europe. Two trips to Cuba, both via legal processes with a visa. Could that be a problem?
We are traveling together to France in a couple of weeks. I understand that my Global Entry is still valid - correct?

I applied for renewal exactly 30 days before expiration. It is now 6 weeks and there has been nothing posted past Pending Review. I opened up a support ticket with CBP Info Center and this is their official response.
If your application status is "Pending Review" then your application has been received and is being processed. Please note that processing times vary by applicant, but on average you can expect your application to be processed:
• Global Entry/FAST: up to 11 weeks
• NEXUS: 3-5 months
• SENTRI: up to 8 months
If you submitted a renewal application before the expiration of your current membership, then you can continue to use your benefits until the renewal is finalized (up to 6 months after your expiration date). We recommend that you print out a copy of your TTP Dashboard to show the pending renewal to show the Officer, if requested.
A follow-up interview may be required upon renewal. This is determined by the vetting center and the determination cannot be appealed.
After the application has been reviewed, the status will be updated to one of the following three statuses:
> Conditionally Approved:
> Denied:
> Approved:
A letter will be posted in your TTP dashboard under Notifications with additional information.
If you are conditionally approved, you will need to schedule an interview. You must complete the interview within 365 days of conditional approval or your application will be cancelled and you will need to submit a new fee and application if you still wish to be a member.

It is valid for 6 months after your expiration date if you put in your renewal application before the expiration date. I was advised by them in a support forum to print out a copy of the Dashboard to show your Application is Pending and that your former Global Entry was approved with the expiration date.

Not that it's relevant for OP now, but, you can apply for renewal of Global Entry up to a year before the
expiration date. The new expiration date is 5 years from the original one, not the date of renewal
application, so you don't lose anything.
I found this out when I was about to cancel a credit card that reimburses for Global Entry application/
renewal fees. Applied, charged it to the card, got reimbursed, then cancelled the card.

The TTP web site says that if you apply before expiration, you get 6 months grace period. The web site does not say what happens if you apply for renewal after expiration, but anecdotal reports here on FT imply that a similar grace period applies in that situation as well.

Another anecdotal report - my son let his expire, submitted the renewal just before flying, and received Pre-Check both directions. But no idea what would have happened with GE if he was entering the country.

Keeping on topic - I learned if you submit an inquiry - not a complaint - you get a phantom half-created account on DHS.gov.
That’s where / how I got a dopey boilerplate answer.
If you do the actual complaint - as linked above - that triggers a review. But to do that you (or I) had to fill out all of my details including stuff like “manager”. It was odd.

Applied February 10th for renewal, 2 days before expiration. Conditionally approved yesterday 4/22. Questions: 1) Does my Conditional Approval impact my six month grace period if I applied before expiration? and 2) If I am at the airport before ( 7 days) my scheduled interview can I try and get a "walk in" appointment?

It shouldn’t, and yes. I believe one can also do the interview as they pass through Immigration on one’s way back into the U.S. from abroad (at airports, not land crossings).

Do you have to do it on the way back from abroad? How about on the way out or just go there ? I applied Feb 9, conditional approved April 19 while my wife was approved without interview. Both of us visited the same 16 countries..I just went to 1 more country than her (Singapore). Don't know why the differential treatment?
