BTW, has the experience been that it takes the same amount of time to process a renewal as a new application?

You can try a different office to see if someone can give you a more detailed answer if possible but you may just have to wait sadly.

05/14/16 Noon - Applied
05/23/16 12:10 am - Conditionally Approved
As of 05/23/16 (Monday) at 8 am the 1st available PHX appt was 06/24, but I refreshed all day long and watched availability go from June to July then at 9 pm or so (AZ time) a PHX appt opened up for Wed 05/25 @ 3 pm which I snagged.
I got there early about 2:30 and was called in at 3:02 pm and was out 10 min later. The Customs agent had me answer the initial form questions like employer, occupation, birth date, travel in last five years, then explained the many ways to lose my Global Entry privileges and off I went.
Because of high volume/traffic, it's likely that my official approval status won't be updated until tomorrow she says, but there's no reason to think I won't be approved and verbally congratulated me as I gathered my passport/license to leave.... She said the card one would use to drive through the border @ Mexico or Canada will be sent in the next two weeks.
For those who are thinking of doing a walk-in..... A lady was seated next to me told me she'd been there for over 3 hours hoping to do a walk-in and was still sitting there when I left. Not sure if they got her in, the GE office closes in PHX at 3:30 and there were still a handful of people with appointments waiting.

I applied along with my wife on 5/18/2016. I don't expect any approval just yet, hopefully in a few more days. Then it is a matter of looking for appointments in Newark airport.
