Alaska Airlines Semi Milk Run

Alaska Airlines Semi-Milk Run trip report

Dear all,

Don’t want to write a full report! However, I have recently gotten the chance to experience a very special flight personally! I have always wanted to fly an Alaska Airlines’ milk run flight and according to the F/A, I picked the semi milk run – JNU-YAK-CDV-ANC, and it was quite an experience. I also get to fly a new aircraft type – Boeing 737-400 Combi. Unfortunately the weather was a bit cloudy but managed to get some nice pictures.

I have to say the F/As are all nice on my intra-Alaskan flights and even better than other similar medium haul flights from Seattle. I got an upgrade from ANC to Juneau and got the typical quiche with fruit, and for the semi milk run, express service was offered on all the short segments – orange juice cup and gourmet party mix. Anytime picnic packs are offered for sale on all flights. Water was offered in addition to the orange juice cup and party mix on the YAK to CDV flight with a low passenger load and slightly more time permitted.

Just some basic flight detail and just click on the link to the shutterfly photo album!

Wow, breakfast on a 570 or so mile flight. Domestic. That's unheard of.

It's been a long time since I've flown Y on AS, so I forgot how nice the seats looked. Row 16 is boss. Seriously. I need to get my a** on a combi.

Before UA cut out domestic C service, there is full dinner on 589 mile IAD-ORD with warm nuts and towels service.

It looks like there is a door at the front of the combi cabin...does this lead into the cargo area? Does the FA have access to the cargo area? Can the FA get all the way up to the cockpit? Seems like a passageway between the passenger cabin and the cargo cabin would be unnecessary as it's hard to think of a reason why anyone would be passing through during flight.

Unfortunately, cloudy skies along Alaska's southeastern coastline are the norm rather than the exception. When it's sunny however, Alaska's "milkruns" provide a wonderful air tour of one of Alaska's most scenic regions.

Some years ago I flew Alaska's flight 65, a 727-100, all the way from Seattle to Anchorage. The routing included stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka, Juneau, Yakutat and Cordova. Total travel time was about 7.5 hours. Flight time between WRG and PSG was about 10 minutes. We flew up a channel with ocean underneath us and mountains on either side. Spectacular!

Alaska hadn't come up with its abreviated drink service back then, so a full drink service was offered to through passengers on the ground as many of the flight times were otherwise too short.

Loved the pictures, thanks for posting them. Haven't flown AS in a long time but that Combi looks really cool.
