Asiana (OZ) F HKG-ORD The return to the US (lots of pics)(Final Part)

As I had posted so many photos of the F lounge in my outbound flight, I will skip it, also skip anymore photos of F seats on the 772. If any of you guys want to see those photos, please refer to my first and second thread for the
F seat
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip-...lots-pics.html
F lounge
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip-...-part-2-a.html

This time the security line definately a lot longer, I only have 30 min spare before boarding for my flights to ORD. However, I did want to go to the F lounge to see what did they offer in the evening. The lounge was virtually empty, no staff were working except those from the front. The food offering were no difference than I was there on my last flight from ORD in the morning, except I saw they now have fried fish fillet with tartar sauce. With only 15 min to boarding, I decided to leave the lounge to have a smoke before my flight. The lady sitting at the front to say my flight is not time to board yet, she offered to escort me to my gate once it is the time, no thanks, I would rather OZ do more about escorting F pax from the plane to the security lines and arrival immigration.

I took this photo 4 hours before arriving into ORD

OZ 236 ICN-ORD
HL7775 (775) 3 class 777-200ER
Seat 2A F class
7:15pm departure 2/11/09

Boarding was on time, this time my flight was using both jet bridge, one for F and C, the other for Y. Just like my outbound flight on UA ICN-NRT, once again, there are security gate check once you go down the escalator, to search drinks from everyone's carry ons. I found this to be quite stupid and annoying, most countries had stopped doing this since we were so many years after 9/11 in 2001.

Once on board, I was escorted to my seat. I asked the FA if I am allowed the put my carryon on an empty seat with the seat belt strapped on like on my previous flight NH NRT-HKG. I was told no, but I did tell the FA my carryon is really heavy, she did however help me lift it up to put it in the overhead bin. Once I sit down, FA offered me the chocie of beverage, I asked for my favourite drink once again, ginseng tea. As usual, it was brought with honey and nuts as well.

One FA came by and personally thanks me to fly with OZ today, told me her name is Kweon, whatever I need just ask her. I kind of recognized her, she looks like the FA who works on my previous flight on ORD-ICN in F several years ago in F. THe thing that I remembered her is because one of the embrassing experience.

Just an old story with Ms Kweon
Several years ago, when I took OZ F for the first time on ORD-ICN on the old 74M. After dinner I have to go to the washroom to take a dump, you know how OZ FA will clean the bathroom after you use it. Mine was quite stinky, Ms Kweon went in there with the nasty smell, went out and saw her covering her nose going in there again. It was quite funny saw that expression on her face, and I still remembered that. Since then whenever I need to take a dump in the washroom on any given flights, I always pour the water into the toilet, flush the toilet, repeating the process several times, to clean it out completely, also through away any toilet paper on the sink counter and on the floor, before I get out of the washroom.

Back to my report on this flight, Ms Kweon also came by and give me amenity kit and head set, since I notice it was the pevious male kit, I asked her for the female one (the round shape one with Bvlgari BVL pour femme). She told me they are no longer giving out the female kit, from now on, it is only the male kit. However, she did came by and give me the C kit, which I was planning to ask her for that kit later on as I am an amenity kit collector. C kit has the usual Biotherm stuff, clarifying lotion, moisturizing balm, and body milk.

C kit on the left with the usual Biotherm stuff, F kit on the right with Bvlgari BLV Pour Homme

This time it looks more promising on my flight, unlike the previous outbound ORD-ICN only has one other pax and a pilot, this time I saw there were 3 other men, 1A looks like an older westerner, 1G looks like middle aged mexican, and 1K looks like an middles aged Korean.

Once the door close, senior purser/manager/ISM Mr. J.W.Cho came by and greet me and wish me enjoy my flight. This is much more proper than my previous ORD-ICN flight. I notice with 3 other pax in front of me in row 1, he didn't say anything to them, but just to come right to me, I was rather puzzled The two FA also stand in the aisle to bow.

Our flight basically fly due east to Japan before we are heading northeast, meal service didn't start as light to moderate turblence didn't subside until our plane get to Tokyo.

Flight time was 12 hours, it can be shorter if there are flavorble wind

Almost an hour since we departed, after the turblence, Ms Kweon came by with the menus, she said I had already pre-ordered the Chinese option. But I asked her if I have to choose main course 1 or main course 2, she said the meal will go through the whole thing. Foolish me I didn't pay attention at the menus it never said main course 1 or main course 2.

F menus plus wine and beverage menus, Note same menus once again from December and my previous flight from ORD.

If you didn't pre order any Chinese or Korean option, you will only get western option. As you can see, rather depressing western options, these chocies can be easily seen on many airlines C menus.

Chinese pre order menus

Korean pre order menus

My Chinese meal start with Hot Canape of Fried Oyster with sweet and sour source

WIth the cart bringing the setting to my seat

Set up my table, it is like the setting for western meal, but pay attention there is a pair of chinese chopsticks instead of the Korean metal chopsticks, also next to it has a big chinese soup spoon with a stand, very proper.

The menus doesn't have a clear description of "appetizer of assorted cold platter", it is shrimp with an abalone in the middle, and also duck egg. The yellow stuff on the top part of the plate is jelly fish.

After that is "Chinese Style soup buldojang", I can't really figure what is that word translate to cantonese, but I love the soup, it is really Hong Kong style. It has shark fin, abalone, dried scallop, sea cucumber, all cooked with dark chicken meat. It is very flavorful.

Then come with main course 1 " mixed seafood in grilled pumpkin"

Inside is all lobster, scallop and shrimp. The pumpkin has cooked through, I can eat the skin of the pumpkin as well, but I know there is another entree coming, so I just finished the seafood, and ate half of the pumpkin.

Stir Fried Beef
Served with Hong Kong style sauce, accompanied by fried rice with vegetables

It came with some fruit as well after that.

Then a tea garden, i choose the earl grey tea.

From the menus, desert was actually the fruits in the chinese option, however, without me asking, FA got the desert from the western option, chocolate brownies.

After dinner service, a FA came by and told me her same is Yang, she will be serving me anytime, I guess Ms.Kweon went on her break. Ms.Yang offer me to set up my chair into the bed mode with duvet to watch movies comfortably, which I argree.

From the duvet, something interesting, I guess this duvet was made before OZ changed their logo, as it still has the old logo, but it also has the SQ logo, would that be SQ actually massively made the duvet and sell it to other airlines ?

I did take a stroll to the other cabins as usual also for some after dinner exercises. C class all filled except 2 seats, and Y is 100% full, it looks like the same as my outbound flight ORD-ICN. When I got to Y, I saw Ms.Kweon, she was actually passing out the immigration form with the other F asst.purser, as well as senior purser Mr.Cho. Mr. Cho saw me and smile, Ms Kweon was looking at me like why I am here in Y, she later ask if I am exercising.

I went back to my seat and go through the TV programs. I saw that Hell's kitchen is still available in my flight, who knows it was still the same episode from my last flight. Basically short subjects are all the same, only most of the blockbusters movies have changed. I had watched Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and The Secret Life of Bees. After that, it is almost mid-flight, I decided to try out that dim sum option listed in the refreshment menus.

Mid flight snack, I had choosen dim sum from Din Tai Fung, this is a famous chinese restaurant from Taiwan originally, it famous for the steamed pork dumplings. 6 pieces of dim sum were put on a steamer, very attractive. The temperature of the food was not right though, one piece is almost cold, the other is warm, dum sum should be served steamingly hot, I unfortunately had to send it back to recook, Ms Kweon and Ms Yang apologize profusely.

After that, I was tired, trying to sleep, I didn't sleep as good as my outbound flight, only slept for about an hour or two, as this flight was having constant light turblence almost throughout the flight. I saw a korean man obviously coming from C to wake up Mr.1A, then they both went behind the curtain to the front, after a while, the korean man came back and sit at 1A. I was thinking were they know each other ? Why would someone from C can sit in F ?

I went to the bathroom, and saw that Ms.Kweon was there, also be a bit nosy. Ms Kweon said 1A is the relieve Captain on my flight from UK, 1G and 1K are captains for the return flight OZ 235. 1G looks like Mexican, Ms Kweon told me he is Indonesian. So all in all OZ hire pilots from different countries. Ms Kweon also mentioned only Captain can sit in F, First Officer has to sit in C, and others sit in Y. Captain or FO can also take advantage of the enclosed crew rest seat between the cockpit or door 1L (on NH 77W, it is where the bigger bathroom located in F) Ms Kweon also said how she doesn't like to work in the F galley in the 777, it is true that OZ only design a small corner in front of door 1R. She also mentoned there is only 1 washroom in F, many times as the captain and FO keep using the bathroom, I actually have to wait for a while. I ask Ms Kweon about her last name, I thought it was rather rare for Korean, she said her ancestor are from China, she did write down her name in Chinese Traditional. However, I have never read that Chinese last name.

I did mention about I saw Ms Kweon few years ago on the flight ORD-ICN on the 74M, she said she had been working in F for the last 5 years (I should have brought the photo I took from my ORD-ICN flight 3 years ago), her spoken English was quite good, in fact, the other two asst.purser Ms Won and Ms.Yang, also ISM Mr.Cho also speak good English and being able to understand you.

It is about an hour an a half before arrival into ORD. It started again with the lunch service, I took a peek behind the curtain in C, they had already finished their meal, I am guessing C meal service started half an hour before F.

It start with Shrimp Bay Salad & Salsa sauce

I had choosen the Korean option Korean Royal Cuisine "Beef & Cabbage Soup" A famous korean beef stew served with various kind of side dishes.

Ms Kweon also took her time to explain to me about each side dishes. As I was still full, I basically just finished everything in the soup dish and skip the rice, and the sides.

After that, some fresh fruits, Ms Kweon ask if I want a espresso or other coffee, but I want another ginseng tea instead, it is awakening and soothing.

Before landing, photo with senior purser/manager/ISM Mr.J.W.Cho, Ms Kweon told me he is about 42, 43 years old, he is quite attractive, I always have a thing for Korean and Japanese guys

I am not in a pretty face, as lack of sleep during the flight. However, I still want to take photo of today's F crew, all asst.purser, from left to right the nice and friendly Ms. S.J.Kweon, Ms.H.M.Yang, and Ms. H.K.Won

Ms. Kweon know that I like to take photos of everything, so she set up pretty to take my photo of the "Thank You gift" She even took the mug out from one of the box, so that I don't need to take another photo myself when I get home. Of course i had choosen the Versace Rosenthal mug rather than the CD.

After she was done with her duties, she came by and thank me once again for flying Asiana, and say goodbye to me.

We flew on a southern course, did not enter Bering Sea, just fly along the Aleutian Island.

The landing was quite bumpy, was confirmed from the previous day weather channel prediction, a low pressure brought in warm temperature (50 degrees F in Feb, quite rare in Chicago), but rain and thunderstorms along.

After landing, it took more than 15 min to get to the gate, we through many taxiway, but pilot didn't explain about what we were doing. We were parked quite far away in T5, gate M19. FA did block off the Y pax, letting F and C pax go out first. I do suggest OZ should arrange some kind of escort for F pax to go to the front of the immigration line, then it would be a true F service.

Final Thoughts
With all 3 of my segments of this OZ trip, I would say the last segment was the most memorable one, it reminded me the kind of service I had with OZ F 3 years ago, polite, friendly, helpful, go the extra mile, great food especially the chinese option. However, the service of other 2 flights had gone downhill quite a bit, especially for the food offerings and the quantity on OZ 235 ORD-ICN. Would my next F trip on OZ ? Maybe/maybe not, I still wish SQ would open up F seat for award on 77W and 380. Moreover, I stil want to fly C or F from ORD through Europe to HKG, e.g. LH, LX, and NZ. That choice maybe rather slim as UA has raised the miles requirement for award travel, Flights to Asia via Europe always higher mileage requirement than thru Pacific.

P.S.(1)When anyone flying longhaul F on OZ, when they handed you the PJ, always asked for size XL, I had size L for outbound flight, being 5"9", and 140lbs, it fitted me, but I felt a bit tight, the tops and bottoms were not long enough.

P.S.(2)I would say the best F seat on OZ 3 class 777 are 2A and 2K, follow by 1A and 1K, all four seats have side storage (the area between the window and your seat, like on NH's 77W), there are not any private compartment inside the seat at all like in UA F. The only place you may store something is the small area under the guest seat in front of you, but sometimes FA may store the duvet in there.

I believe "buldojang" translates to "fat tiu cheung" in Cantonese, which literally means "Buddha Jump Over the Wall".

The ingredients you describe basically sounds like it. The soup is actually Fujian style.

Got it, now I remembered, it was once quite popular in Hong Kong, now is less common, I was thinking some kind of home made slow cooking soup.
FA Ms. Kweon said she could email me the chinese name of that soup, now the mystery had solved.

These reports are real labors of love, and many read them (and enjoy) without posting. Do appreciate your efforts ^

Consider me one of your many silent admirers! Thanks for your terrific reports. I especially love the variety and quantity of photos you post. After reviewing your reports, I feel like I know exactly what the flight was like... and what it would be like if I took a similar flight. That helps me make good decisions about how to redeem frequent flyer miles and invest real money in air travel. Many many thanks!

Loved the report and the photos are amazing. When you say 'pre-order' do you mean that the Korean or Chinese menu has to be pre-ordered before the day of the flight? Do you just call OZ 24-48 hours ahead of time to pre-book your meal?
