Champagnes and Wines

Champagnes

Dom Pérignon 1999
Few wines have achieved the mythical status of Cuvée Dom Pérignon. Moët et Chandon made their first Cuvée Dom Pérignon 70 years ago, a champagne that is always from the finest Grands Crus and always carries a vintage date. The 1999 is both fresh on the nose and full on the palate, a triumph of ethereal elegance.

Krug Grande Cuvee
Founded in Reims in 1843, the House of Krug is now managed by the 5th and 6th generations of the Krug family. Rigorous selection and care go into every detail of the “multi-vintage” Grand Cuvée, which offers a magical combination of aromatic complexity, power and finesse with a long, lingering finish. Krug is the ultimate experience in champagne.

White Wines

Penfolds Reserve Bin 05A Chardonnay 2005 Adelaide Hills
Traditionally, Australian Chardonnays have been known to be full flavoured, rich and oaky. This wine breaks this stereotype and is an excellent example of the “new breed” of finer and more elegant Chardonnays now being produced. The grapes for Bin 5A were sourced from the cooler Adelaide Hills, one of Australia’s most exciting new wine regions. The grapes were whole bunch pressed, before fermentation in French barriques. It is a complex Chardonnay with a wonderful texture and palate length. The wine was made by Oliver Crawford, a finalist for Winemaker of the Year in 2006, and one of Australia’s brightest young talents.

Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Kabinett 2005 Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
The historic Von Kesselstatt estate dates back to 1377 and features some of the most famous vineyard sites in the Mosel area. The most prominent of these is Piesporter Goldtropfchen (which translates as “droplets of gold from the village of Piesporter”), whose steeply terraced slopes and slate soils present the Riesling grape with perfect growing conditions. Silvery pale in colour, with a charming bouquet of citrus blossoms and white peaches, elegantly fruity with light honeyed ripeness backed by a refreshing acidity, this is a perfect example of the superb 2005 vintage.

Red Wines

Mount Langi Ghiran 2003 Shiraz Victoria
Trevor Mast, winemaker for Mount Langi Ghiran, has consistently produced some of Australia’s greatest Shiraz wines. Made from old Shiraz vines grown in the Grampians region of Victoria, this spicy wine is lush and concentrated with soft ripe tannins. It is powerful, long living and a fine example of this exciting grape variety.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre 1999 Saint-Julien
Previously over-shadowed by its neighbours Leoville-Barton and Leovill-Las Cases, this estate has seen a remarkable renaissance since 1989 and has reclaimed pride of place amongst the Saint-Julien Second Growths. The excellent 1999, one of the stars of the vintage, is rich in plumy black fruit with opulence and complexity on the palate and a rounded yet firm finish.

Port

Dow’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port Portugal
Dow possesses some of the finest vineyards in the Upper Douro and is one of the oldest names in the history of Port, dating back to 1798. The beautifully balanced Tawny Port is carefully matured for over 20 years in wooden barrels known as “pipes” before being bottled. Light tawny in colour, showing mature raisiny fruit aromas with hints of honey. It is on the palate rich and nutty, with a wonderful balance, a clean crisp finish and a soft lingering aftertaste.

Champagnes and Wines

Champagnes

Charles Heidsieck
Of the three Champagne Houses based in the historic city of Reims that bear the name Heidsieck, Charles Heidsieck is the most famous, being the oldest and the largest and having coined the name “Champagne Charlie”. A perfect blend of the Chardonnay grape for elegance, Pinot Noir for body and a little Pinot Meunier for spiciness, this is a marvellously expressive Champagne, lively on the nose, biscuity and creamy on the palate with rounded, dry finish.

White Wines

Wild Rock “The Infamous Goose” Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Marlborough, New Zealand
The Marlborough region in New Zealand’s South Island produces some of the world’s most exciting and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc. The style is leafy, racy and highly distinctive. Wild Rock is a youthful modern wine company headed by highly respected viticulturalist and Master of Wine Steve Smith and winemaker Matt Murphy. By way of clarification Goose is the nickname of the man who grew the grapes.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay 2006 South Australia
Australia has a reputation for rich and oaky Chardonnay. This stereotype has been challenged of late by the evolution of a new modern style of Chardonnay. These wines, generally grown in cooler regions, are better balanced with less overt oak and higher natural acidity. Wynns is such a wine. Made by Sue Hodder, one of Australia’s most respected female winemakes, Wynns was founded in 1891 and is synonymous with the Coonawarra region. Sealed in screw cap to eliminate cork taint.

Red Wines

Elderton Shiraz 2004 Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley is known internationally for classic “Aussie” Shiraz. These wines are rich and full-bodied with a characteristic soft finish and mocca flavours. Elderton is a small family owned company with an excellent reputation for its reds. This wine, made from old vines from the warmer valley floor, was aged in a mixture of American and French oak barrels and is a fine example of traditional Barossa Shiraz.

Chateau Giscours 1999 Margaux
Located in the heart of a beautiful 200 estate, the Giscours vineyards were classified a very prestigious Third Growth in 1855. Today the quality from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes grown on the classic gravelly soil of the southern Medoc region is finer than ever. Aromas of blackcurrant and hints of cedar wood mark this wine with its classically elegant finish. 1999 was a very good year in Bordeaux, perfect for current drinking.

Port

Dow 2001 Late Bottled Vintage Port Portugal
A Late Bottled Vintage Port, usually shortened to LBV, is Port from a single, high quality vintage, bottled after four to five years spent maturing in large oak barrels, or “pipes” as they are known in the Douro. Deep ruby in colour, with all the spice, bramble fruit and concentration typical of a fine Port, and a warm, smooth sweetness of the finish, this LBV is one of the highest quality.
