Vinothek Discoveries

Champagne

Champagne Brut Fleur de Champagne, Duval-Leroy, Frankreich
Located in the heart of the Cote des Blancs since 1859, the champagne house Duval-Leroy manages the fortunes of the company. The classic Duval-Leroy Brut Cuvee is a composition exactly in the style of this dedicated champagne business woman, who sets a lot of store on finesse. The bouquet suggests ripe pears and appleas, as well as white blossom with notes of citrus and also delicate hints of brioche. This is a fine, classic champagne with length and depth.

White Wine

2009 Mosel Riesling Kabinett trocken, Villa Huesgen, Deutschland
The Huesgens owned many vineyards and had a prosperous wine business as far back as the 19th century. Ado Huesgen has been considerate of his inheritance. With this Kabinett he seamlessly builds on the tradition of great Rieslings and shows that subtle hints of fruit, ana elegant character and at the same time a powerful style do not have to be a contraction.

2009 Columbia Valley Chardonnay unoaked, Columbia-Crest, USA
The wines of the new world are often linked with intense oak character. However, the wine estate Columbia Crest, deliberately forges another path. This chardonnay is designated as unoaked i.e. without any oak, allowing the aromatic richness of the chardonnay grape to develop to the full. With ripe fruit aromas suggesting apple, grapefruit and light mineral notes. On the palate with a juicy character.

Red Wine

2007 Chateau Reysson, Cru Bourgeois, Haut-Medoc, Frankreich
In Vertheull in the heart of the Medoc, Chateau Reysson has superb terrior. The protected site and deep-seated soils provide ideal growing conditions for the vines. The wine, made from two thirds merlot and one third cabernet sauvignon, is matured for more than a year in French barriques. An intense, aromatic wine with hints of berry fruit and elegent oak spiciness as well as powerful tannins.

2007 Mendoza Malbec, Don Baltazar, Argentinien
The grape varietz malbec from south-west France found its way to the region of Mendoza at the foot of the Andes in the 19th century. Here it found perfect growing conditions. Malbec developed into a kind of national variety for Argentina, which makes most convincing wines of deep colour and opulent perfume. Aromas of berries and dried fruit alternate with hints of vanilla and toasty notes.

Champagne

Bollinger Special Cuvee
Bollinger is one of the most famous names in Champagne and has been seen on the very best tables since its foundation in the early 19th century. Still managed by descendents of the original family, Bollinger owns some of the greatest Grand and Premier Cru vineyards that surround the village of Ay, near Epernay in the heart of Champagne country, which make up this splendid 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinor Meunier blend that has extra long ageing in bottle to achieve the creamy elegance of long finish for which it is so highly prized.

White Wine

2008/2010 D'Arenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, Australia
D'Arenberg founded in 1912 is one of McLaren Vale's most exciting wineries and "wild haired" winemaker Chester Osborne has a strong international following for his wines. This coastal region, with its dry mediterranean climate, is known for its wine and olives hence the name The Olive Grove. This chardonnay combines ripe flavours with freshness, this is achieved by careful blending of oaked and unoaked components of the blend.

Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Marlborough, New Zealand
Most Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wines are quite herbaceous with pronounced leafy characters. This wine is quite atypical as the grapes are predominately from Blind River in the Awatere Valley which is drier and less fertile than the main valley floor. The result is a lively wine with strong lemony character, bracing acidity, pronounced minerality and overall freshness. Tinpot Hut takes its name from an old mustering shed in the remote hills of the region. It is made by highly rated winemaker Fiona Turner.

Red Wine

St Hallet Faith Shiraz 2008
The Barossa Valley in South Australia is synonymous with Shiraz and is internationally famouse for these full flavoured reds with their distinctive spicy mocca characters and soft ripe tannins. St Hallett, and their winemaker Stuart Blackwell have played a major role in the promotion and appreciation of the regions "old vine" Shiraz vineyards. Faith is a draw from a number of vineyards across the region and is an excellent example of the Barossa style.

or

2008 Tatachilla Shiraz - McLaren Vale, Australia
Shiraz is Australia's most famous grape variety - yet the style of wine produced varies greatly depending upon the specific climatic conditions of the region. McLaren Vale has dry and warm Mediterranean growing conditions so the Shiraz wines are ripe and full with a soft finish. The region close to the sea south of Adelaide is well known for its patchwork of olive groves, almond trees and vineyards. Whilst Tatachilla was established over 100 years ago it has undergone a major renaissance over the last 15 years and now produces some of the regions finest wines.

2008 Brolio Chianti Classico Tuscany, Italy
The Ricasoli family built the historic Castello di Brolio in 1141 and the ancestor of current owner Barone Francesco Ricasoli laid down the rules for the wines of Chianti in the late 1800s. Produced principally from Tuscany's most famous grape variety Sangiovese that gives the intense ruby colour, the wine shows aromas of red berry fruit with liquorice spice, great depth of flavour on the palate with a velvety yet firm finish. 2008 was an excellent vintage that is now showing its best.

Port

Offley LBV 2005 Port
Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) is a high quality Port from a single vintage that spends between four and six years in large oak barrels (known as Pipes) so that it is ready for drinking once in bottle. From Offley's Quinta da Boavista estate in the Duoro Valley, this superb Port is deeply coloured, with aromas of smoky/spicy red berry fruit, plummy and rich on the palate, with a lingering harmonious finish, a perfect partner for cheese and nuts.

OR

Fonseca Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage 2005
The 2005 vintage was preceded by a series of intense heatwaves throughout the summer, followed by some welcomed rainfall which helped to round off the ripening of the crop. As a result, this vintage produced wonderfully intense and concentrated wines of black-red colour, dense plum and fig nose, full body and fruity finish, pure and direct.

2009 Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Schutzenhaus, Riesling Kabinett Rheingau, Germany
One of the most prestigious estates in Germany's Rheingau region, Balthasar Ress was founded in 1870 at Hattenheim, already famous for its Rieslings of exceptional quality. This is sourced from the estate's finest steeply terraced vineyards, the different wines being carefully blended to complement one another perfectly to represent the floral fruitiness of Hattenheim. Light lemony yellow in colour with a lovely palate of ripe summer fruits, fresh acidity balancing the slight sweetness, a wine of great purity and quality.

Red Wine

Gestos Malbec 2008 Finca Filchman
The Malbec grape is to Argentina's Mendoza region what Cabernet Sauvignon is to France's Bordeaux, Sangiovese to Italy's Tuscany, producing densely coloured red wines with a complex concentration of summer fruits on the palate and a touch of spice on the finish. Finca Filchman is one of the oldest established wineries in the country, whose vineyards have been producing quality benchmarks for many decades.

or

2008 Barbera D'Alba DOC GD Vajra Piedmont, Italy
Barbera is one of the famous 3 Bs from Piedmont, the others being Barbaresco and Barolo and is unique in being named after the spicy red grape that it is made from. The GD Vajra estate has six different vineyards, the best of which goes to make this wine whose aromas of black berry and cherry fruits leads to vigourous yet smooth flavours on the palate and a naturally firm finish. 2008, an excellant vintage in Piedmont, is now drinking beautifully.

2007 Chateau La Garde Pessac-Leognan Bordeaux, France
This 42.6 hectare estate in Bordeaux's northern Graves region produces wines that are a perfect half-way-house between those from Saint-Emilion, where the ripe richness of the Merlot grape dominates, and the Medoc, where the firmer, more tannic Cabernet Sauvignon is to the fore. Its impressive deep colour leads to aromas of blackberry and blueberry, the palate showing a concentrated berry fruit character with impressive freshness and elegance. 2007 was a good vintage which is developing well compared to the harder 2006s.

Champagnes & Wines

White Wine

2010 D'Arenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, Australia
D'Arenberg founded in 1912 is one of McLaren Vale's most exciting wineries and "wild haired" winemaker Chester Osborne has a strong international following for his wines. This coastal region, with its dry mediterranean climate, is known for its wine and olives hence the name The Olive Grove. This chardonnay combines ripe flavours with freshness, this is achieved by careful blending of oaked and unoaked components of the blend.

Port

Fonseca Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage 2005
The 2005 vintage was preceded by a series of intense heatwaves throughout the summer, followed by some welcomed rainfall which helped to round off the ripening of the crop. As a result, this vintage produced wonderfully intense and concentrated wines of black-red colour, dense plum and fig nose, full body and fruity finish, pure and direct.
