Well, the Theme says: Bricks are not rocks, however.
The Rules say: Voters will be asked to choose between the submitted images based on the entries visual appeal, artistry, composition, and aptness to the theme of the contest I wouldn't say that they are in any way disqualified, but they may be at a disadvantage during the voting process. In and of themselves I agree they are great pictures. birdstrike My intent was discourage submission of a picture of one dog mounting another in front of a brick wall. ;) However, if you have such a picture taken at Delicate Arch, on that new glass overlook of the Grand Canyon, or in the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon, then by all means, show us! :D And remember, no Photoshopping, so don't get any ideas. |

...And remember, no Photoshopping, so don't get any ideas. It will be like garden gnomes and the GGLF - omnipresent in travel photos... On a serious note, I assume editing of photos as per the Reuters guidelines is permitted? They are essentially the same as the rules on the first post of the contest threads... |

I'm still waiting for someone to post their efforts after finding that old tin of red paint in their garage ;)

Just don't sharpen images so much that they can draw blood. :p As an aside, CS3 is now available. I hope to have mine next week. ;) |

Here is my first entry, Noravank Monastery, Armenia:

And continuing in that theme, Noravank Canyon:
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u.../Noravank2.jpg I wish the sky had been a little clearer so you could really get the contrast of the snow against a blue sky, but the scene was still breathtaking. |

You also might want to see if your editor supports HDR (Photoshop does, as an example). HDR involves using multiple exposures of the same scene that get averaged by the computer to produce a greater dynamic range than would otherwise be possible. If your photo is stored as raw, you can adjust the exposure for a series of three different prints -- adjust one to show the sky, one to show the mountain and one to average between the two to bring out midrange. Then apply the HDR tool (how it works will vary from program to program) and you can wind up with a photo that maintains the texture and color of the mountain while featuring the contrast with the blue sky and white mountains behind. |
PTravel, thanks for the tips! Unfortunately, the sky was overcast, so there is no blue there to bring out. Any color would have to be added artificially, I think.
I have not tried HDR, but I have several shots of this area. I will try photoshop and see what I can get. |
"Red Rocks" is pretty specific, and I'm not shooting in Moab until May, so I'll have to go with some oldie but goodies.
From Carousel Rock, Schnebly Hill Rd, Sedona http://richs.smugmug.com/photos/24278947-L.jpg (some day I'll clone in a nice sky for this shot...) Unknown rock formation in Sedona, from helicopter http://richs.smugmug.com/photos/24253508-L.jpg |
