I wouldn't say that they are in any way disqualified, but they may be at a disadvantage during the voting process.

In and of themselves I agree they are great pictures.

I'm certainly not going to disqualify them - but our fearless leader raises a good point - aptness to the contest theme is part of it.

My intent was discourage submission of a picture of one dog mounting another in front of a brick wall. ;)

However, if you have such a picture taken at Delicate Arch, on that new glass overlook of the Grand Canyon, or in the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon, then by all means, show us! :D

And remember, no Photoshopping, so don't get any ideas.

I sincerely hope someone has the knowledge, skill, and time to photoshop the dog-mounting photo and enter it into every single contest... :D

It will be like garden gnomes and the GGLF - omnipresent in travel photos...

On a serious note, I assume editing of photos as per the Reuters guidelines is permitted? They are essentially the same as the rules on the first post of the contest threads...

Okay, this may be my second entry:

I'm still waiting for someone to post their efforts after finding that old tin of red paint in their garage ;)

That would be disqualified, unless the animals could be persuaded to perform on site. and even then. . .

Yes, though alas We have no Duty Editors available to answer questions on the editing techniques used "including those in the latest CS2 and CS3 functions".

Just don't sharpen images so much that they can draw blood. :p

As an aside, CS3 is now available. I hope to have mine next week. ;)

I'm going to pick mine up this weekend. I've been using the CS3 beta pretty much since it came out. Well worth the upgrade.

Maybe tomorrow, we'll have a new forum to talk about it in. :)

Here is my first entry, Noravank Monastery, Armenia:

And continuing in that theme, Noravank Canyon:

I wish the sky had been a little clearer so you could really get the contrast of the snow against a blue sky, but the scene was still breathtaking.

Mike, is the photo saved in RAW format? If so, there's a lot you can do to bring out the blue sky. First, any photo editor should allow you to adjust levels/gamma. That will help you maintain midlevel detail while bringing out the sky. I used a similar approach to bring out the grey sky in my Great Wall shot which is in this thread (at least at the moment -- I may change my entries again. ;) )

You also might want to see if your editor supports HDR (Photoshop does, as an example). HDR involves using multiple exposures of the same scene that get averaged by the computer to produce a greater dynamic range than would otherwise be possible. If your photo is stored as raw, you can adjust the exposure for a series of three different prints -- adjust one to show the sky, one to show the mountain and one to average between the two to bring out midrange. Then apply the HDR tool (how it works will vary from program to program) and you can wind up with a photo that maintains the texture and color of the mountain while featuring the contrast with the blue sky and white mountains behind.

PTravel, thanks for the tips! Unfortunately, the sky was overcast, so there is no blue there to bring out. Any color would have to be added artificially, I think.

I have not tried HDR, but I have several shots of this area. I will try photoshop and see what I can get.

"Red Rocks" is pretty specific, and I'm not shooting in Moab until May, so I'll have to go with some oldie but goodies.
