First trip to PVG
Newbie TR here, I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures.
This was a quick weekend trip to get a taste of Shanghai after hearing so much about it. Also thrown in is a first trip on a Chinese air carrier and a transit airport I've never flown to... Happy reading! :) BPs for both segments of the outbound trip, lady luck is with me as I secured my favorite seat on a BR 744, seat 27A (by door 1L) BP Gate C3 of CKS Term. 2, still empty... Gate C3 Behind a soon-to-be-retired BR 767, my plane is towed in from overnight parking BR 767 & 747 BR 747, B-16401 B-16401 My seat offers great legroom and I am usually the first or second off the plane. As I wait first in line for security re-screening (transit passengers), I reminded myself to change my seat for the next leg to a window one… Parked next door to the BR 747 is the Shanghai Airlines 767 which will take me to PVG FM 767 Seat changed to 7A, time to walk around the terminal a bit... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...058_edited.jpg The control tower and one of the two taxiways to the main runway http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...058_edited.jpg With only 7 gates, really not much to see...man I miss Hong Kong ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...061_edited.jpg Seating in this part of the 767 is 2-3-2, made a note to myself as I want to fly 5A (bulkhead) on the way back... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...062_edited.jpg Its been years (well, since Kai Tak in the late '80s IIRC) since I've rode in a transfer bus, with this surprise parked next to us (Cargo Kuzu from Turkey) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...064_edited.jpg Sucessfully met up with my friends (thanks to all who offered advise on how to meet up!) and off to the Meglev station http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...065_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...066_edited.jpg Took a seat in the first carriage, speed now has reached... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...072_edited.jpg A peak in the Engineer’s compartment http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...073_edited.jpg Speed now... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...079_edited.jpg With the view outside a blur, we reached the the top speed of 430 kmph/267mph http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...080_edited.jpg City tour- starts with the old building across the street from where I am staying, built in 1928 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...084_edited.jpg Bank of China http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...092_edited.jpg The Peace Hotel http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...093_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...094_edited.jpg Tea @ GH, taken from the 53rd floor ^ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...098_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...099_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...100_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...101_edited.jpg Pix of the subway (Line 1) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...107_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...108_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...109_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...110_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...113_edited.jpg BPs on the return flight (it all ended too quickly), seat 5A is mine for the sleep down to Macau http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...115_edited.jpg Another surprise, this time its Finnair http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...117_edited.jpg A bag English sign, it should read "Shanghai Invites You Back..." http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...118_edited.jpg View of the terminal http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...119_edited.jpg Gate 36, transfer bus and off to the remote gates http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...120_edited.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...121_edited.jpg Korean Air 737 pulling up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...128_edited.jpg After taking this shot my camera died, fortunately I was able to save the memory card. An expensive ending to the trip :td: :p Some personal comments: 1. Shanghai is indeed a beautiful city, one must allow at least 3 full days to fully explore it, and I definitely plan on going back… 2. Except for the rather unpleasant experience with the taxi stand at the downtown Meglev station, Shanghai taxis have exceeded my expectations for their service. The subway was also a nice experience. 3. GH Shanghai couldn’t have been located in a better place and their view is outstanding, definitely worth a visit, even if not staying there. Thanks for reading! All comments are welcome! |

Can you tell us more about service on board, Shainghai airlines is not often reported on FT Good job Macau to PVG: Seat pitch was fine for a 2 hour flight (I don't know for sure the exact pitch). For food we were offered a chicken noddle dish, small fruit plate, a roll (cold), cake and choice of beverage. Bathroom was filthy, paper towels ran out about 40 minutes after take-off (or it was never refilled at Macau?), toilet assembly secured with duct tape but worked ok. Announcements (English) was pretty much accent free, but PLEASE SLOW THEM DOWN! One overhead bin door popped open upon landing (behind me in roll 9, right side). I was kindda unprepared for that. :td: PVG to Macau: I was on the first transfer bus and had to wait for two more groups of late passengers (caused a 30 minute delay). FM should do better with the bording flow, especially if its the first flight of the day to Macau and using a remote gate. After I boarded I placed my backpack and some magazines in my seat as I made an early run to the facilities, upon returning all my magazine (3) were stolen  Backpack fortunately was intact. Breafast: A cold plate with mystry salad and half a sandwitch, a hot entree with some kind of salty pastry, a Chinese steam bun and a coconut pastry (too sweet and greasy), fruit plate and choice of beverage Announcements (English): Still too fast and this time can't understand at all due to accent Landing: Ok, nothing popped open. ^ Overall: A 4.5 out of 10, 3 points along just for the unique experience ;) |
Nice trip report. Was very interested in the Maglev photos, can't wait to try it out for myself someday! Shanghai certainly has changed since I last visited in the 90's.
