Worst Lounge: SQ Lounge in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

First class ticket for $410!
Was supposed to be back via IAD-SAN-LAX as well, but UX/Shuttle America was so late PIT-IAD that we mis-connected at IAD. Luckily, UA protected us in United First on a 3 cabin IAD-SFO, so it was much nicer than the Airbus/CRJ/737 on the original route.

GCM claims it is 100,969miles...and I just ignored ground transfers and treated them as miles.....the things I do to avoid work at 1.26am ten and a half hours before a deadline :o

My travels this year were combination of paid and reward redemption tickets. Nonetheless, I think I have flown the most ever in my life in 2004:

CX SFO - HKG J 744
CX HKG - BKK J 744

AC YYZ - LHR J 333
SQ LHR - SIN F 744
SQ SIN - HKG F 773

That's it for the year......

BEST FLIGHT:

SQ LHR to SIN, F cabin and 3 cabin attendants to myself!!

WORST FLIGHT:

AC YYZ to YVR in the new 340-500 in Y; full flight, very cramped and uncomfortable. Flight departure delayed due to "late incoming aircraft" yet I was on the exact same plane from LHR to YYZ several hours earlier!!

BEST LOUNGE:

Tie: GF Lounge, Bahrain and BA Concorde Lounge, LHR. Due to VERY tight connection time was unable to sample SQ SIN Lounge.

WORST LOUNGE:

Best flight:
Apr. 24th MUC-ZRH, C-Class was nearly empty, and I received two breakfasts... :)

Worst flight:
Aug. 26th Airzena Georgian Airlines VIE-TBS, scheduled at 11:00am, rescheduled to 4:00pm and then cancelled. All pax were rebooked to a flight WAW-TBS which was chartered by a Georgian football equipe and made an intermediate stop at VIE at 01:00am. When we were all on board, they recognized that C-Class was completely overbooked and offered me a cash-refund of €250 for flying Y (there were only middle seats available) or a night at the NH-hotel and a rebooking for next day's AUA flight. Look at the list what I decided...

Best lounge:
The new one at ZRH, Terminal A

Worst lounge:
Anna Livia-Lounge at DUB: Very small snack bar, no internet, no quiet area...

All flights were for leisure or "VFR" (Visiting friends and relatives).

Status: Swiss Travel Club Gold, requalified.

And about hotels: Any quiet hotel with a clean bed, shower and TV is OK for me...

Greetings Patrick

Swiss Tony Dec 17, 2004 2:36 am

OK, I haven't kept track of this over the year but counting back, I think it's 36 flights flown and 4 to go.

2 in F, 23 in C, 15 in Y

New airlines - Calm Air, Bangkok Airways and because of a VDB, American(!)
New planes - Hs 748
New airports - SOU, YWG, YUL, USM, YYQ and the new one at Oslo

Award to the lounge with the best selection of beers - Servisair at Birmingham (UK) with an assortment of 14 in the fridge

Award to the lounge with the best beer - MLL at YWG and Fort Garry Pale Ale on draft :p

As for hotels, about 50 nights at a guess with another 6 to go...

Most impressive hotel - Fort Garry, Winnipeg
Most overrated hotel - Grand Club floors at Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong
Worst hotel - Asia Airport Hotel, Bangkok Airport

Hotel aspiring to be Fawlty Towers - Holiday Inn Kings Cross Bloomsbury (London). 4 stays and on every occasion there's been a problem with the in-room broadband connection. I won't be going back.

Wishing everyone safe & happy travels in 2005...

stut Dec 17, 2004 4:49 am

New Stuff
Airlines: AC, LO, OS, SK, SQ, MU
Aircraft: CRJ-200, ERJ-145, DHC8 (various), A321, A330, MD80, MD81
Airports: YUL, YYZ, CUR, DUS, SIN, HKG, PVG, ARN

Best...

Lounge: The London Lounge at LHR T3. It manages to combine everything I want from a lounge - a nice atmosphere, somewhere to work, somewhere to relax, plenty snacks and drinks, a nice little smoking area, loads of newspapers... It just does everything well.

Flight: SQ F LHR-SIN - how can any of the others compare? See for the TR.

Hotel: Le Meridien Vienna. It suits me. It's ultra-modern and pretty cool, but without the attitude that often goes with it. The service (particularly in the restaurant) has been wonderful.

Airport: Tough call. I do still love LCY, but HKG really is excellent, and PVG has the maglev...

Upgrade: In Le Meridien Vienna, from basic room to a Junior Suite. We like that.

Special Mentions

Hotel Service: Le Meridien Apollo in Amsterdam. I do stay there a lot, but to have a member of staff apologise profusely for not recognising me immediately is ridiculous.

Airline Service: bmi on an LHR-AMS flight, when I suffered a panic attack on take-off. They couldn't have been more helpful.

Dealing with a Crisis: bmi again, on AMS-LHR, into a severe Wx at LHR, with a 2 hour wait on the tarmac following arrival. They pulled out all the stops to keep us comfortable, and get onward arrangements sorted out. Well done them.

Lounge Bonus: bmi Diamond Clubs have Irn Bru. You just can't argue with that.

Worst...

Lounge: The generic lounge at CUR. It's really not worth the effort of walking up the stairs.

Flight: MU HKG-PVG. Couldn't really have been less comfortable, in an ancient A300 with the interior quite literally held together by bits of sticky tape. See here for the TR.

Hotel: Not really had a bad one this year, but the Le Meridien Ιtoile in Paris was a huge disappointment. Average at best, and my ability to speak French was the only thing that seemed to get me service above that which my colleagues experienced.

Airport: CUR. It's really not designed to deal with the daily 747 (or MD-11) that KLM sends over there. Utter, utter chaos.

That's about it, really. Got my BD*G comped from my KL PE, and don't regret it for an instant (and have requalified twice over). All my personal trips were a great success. I'm now grounded until February, due a recurrence of a prior illness, which is a shame. But hopefully, past that, next year will be more of the same...

OK, here's my effort for 2004. All are paid, and all leisure flights except for one measly Sydney-Melbourne round trip.

Total miles flown: 55,744 (a record for me)
Sectors flown: 40 (one shy of my record)

New stuff:
- Airlines: Korean, US Airways, Ted (Rar!)
- Countries: China, South Korea
- Airports: ADL, GMP, YNY (Yangyang, South Korea), NPL, ORD, PHL, PEK

Best & Worst:

Best Lounge: Joint winners are AirNZ lounge in Sydney, and the SQ and OZ lounges in Seoul Incheon (*love* those shower suites in the OZ lounge, like a swanky hotel room)
Most disappointing lounge: a tie between the AC transborder MLL lounge in YVR and the AC/SK London Lounge in LHR. Both are shiny, new, and in many ways excellent lounges but they somehow left me cold... Oh, and the international Qantas Club in SYD, for its annoying layout and terrible choice of food & drink.
Worst Lounge: JL lounge in HNL (used by AC, which is why I was there) plus *all* domestic American lounges for their appalling lack of food and free alcohol

Best flight: SAS in business class CPH-PEK. Scored the last business class seat on the plane, and enjoyed good food, nice wine and excellent service.
Worst flight: AirNZ WLG-SYD - I made the mistake of taking the 6:40am flight and then going straight to work on arrival in SYD. This means getting up at about 4:00 am (which is 2:00am Sydney time), in my case having had too much to drink and too little to sleep the night before. Things weren't helped by the pathetic excuse of a breakfast served on the flight - I could have eaten it 20 times over - or the terrible entertainment (see next entry), lousy instant coffee, and my inability to get any more sleep. Never again!
Worst inflight movie: Around the world in 80 days (I lost count of how many aircraft this was playing on).
Best hotel: I didn't stay in many this year, but the JW Marriott in Seoul would be a standout in any year. Lovely rooms, great toiletries, and a stunning (and huge) fitness centre.
Most embarrassing travel experience: Read all about it here. And witnessed by another FT-er, no less! :o
Most improved airline: Qantas domestic - after going through a very bad patch, I've had lots of great service on QF this year. And even the food has improved!
Best FT tip-off: The UK *A promotion: a quick address change to the UK earned me 4 upgrade vouchers, thanks to which my October RTW was all in business class - thanks guys! :)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, and here's to another good travel year in 2005 (though I don't have anything booked yet: eek! )

Well, sure, I'll throw mine out there.

Map: http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=O...MAP-CENTER=DEN

Not as many international flights (or continents) as some of the other maps posted, but I seem to have made up for it with domestic. One round trip to DEN was business, all the rest of the flights for pleasure (and yes, I do enjoy nearly everything about flying, even if I'm not actually going to anywhere).

Miles in air (according to GCM): 94531
Airlines: United, USAir, Icelandair, Qantas, Air Niugini, Airlink, America West
Commercial airline segments: 85
Nights in hotels: 4 (plus some hostels in Iceland, PNG, and Australia) (Does anyone have a lower hotel nights/flight segments ratio? I almost always fly to see people I know, and can't stand spendng money on a hotel - and yes, I know it's weird to be willing to do MRs, but not spend money on a hotel even when I'm actually visiting somewhere)
States where I never left the secured area: Arizona (PHX), Pennsylvania (PHL)
Missed connections: total of only 2 (out of >40) for the entire year - kind of miraculous - both caused by mechanical problems on 744's ex-ORD
Award tix: 3 (SBA-IND, SBA-NYC, SBA-ORD)
Most expensive country to get to: Papua New Guinea
Most expensive country once there: Iceland

The week I returned from Iceland, I saw the Slate story about the FTer's going on the $61 tix, and that was my introduction to Flyertalk - another travel event in 2004.

Well, according to my trusty Excel spreadsheet (and remembering that I live in Australia):

Total segments: 51 (30 Aust Domestic, 4 USA Domestic, 17 International) [my record in 2002 was 87]

Segments by class of service:
Paid Y segments: 40
Op-upgraded J segments: 0
Award-upgraded J segments: Intl 7, Dom 3 (all QF), 1 AS (LAX/SEA)

Segments by carrier:
Qantas: 43 (30 Dom, 13 Intl)
BA: 3 (all Intl)
AA: 1 (all internal USA)
AS: 3 (all internal USA)

Total miles: 71,554 miles (22,355 Aust Domestic; 46,888 International; 2,311 USA Dom) - my 2nd longest mileage since commencing in 1987 (my record 129,108 miles in 2002)

Frequent Flyer Miles earned:
QF: 279,270
AA: 1,500
NW: 2,311

Pressed for time and not about to bore you on all the sectors I flew.

Hotel nights: SPG - 11; Hilton - 10; Hyatt - 1; Marriott - 1

Best Mileage Run: QF WP's Mileage Run across Australia
Best Trip Report (mine): New Years in America
Best FT moments: OZFEST 2004 and our 2004 Xmas QP BNE and SYD meetings
Best FT hint: Toss up between *G status match or Miletracker
