US 24

I enjoy cruising Kansas 2-lanes between my home in Laramie and my native area and family in SE Kansas. Recently in Stockton, Kansas, a local told me US 24 used to be the main highway between Indianapolis and Denver (displaced by I-70 and I-80). He waxed on how people used to travel at night and sleep during summer heat, and how when in the 40's his father bought the service station he's in now (with old Studebakers) there were no keys...it never closed!

I checked out US 24 in the map and it's probably little changed in decades. It was numbered in 1924, can't find it's original name. I hope to drive it from Colorado to Indianapolis starting Sept 14.

Hate to be a prude here, but the the preliminary numbering system for U.S. highways was first laid out in 1926, wand was made official as of January 2, 1927.
