Lolloping around in Ljubljana
In my continuing endeavour to work my way around the eastern European countries, this weekend sees me heading towards Ljubljana for an extended weekend. Ljubljana seems to be very under represented on FT, I could only find two trip reports and both of those were flights to Ljubljana, nothing really of the city itself.
Time to correct that omission :D Tomorrow will be a flying day leaving fairly early in the morning and arriving in Slovenia at around 7:30 pm. on Sunday I’ve got two structured tours, first, a morning walking tour for 2 1/2 hours, and then in the afternoon a 3 1/2 hour food tour which I suspect will cover much the same ground as the walking tour. Finally Monday morning is at leisure and I need to be at the airport around noon for the return trip to Newcastle. Thanks go to Fabo.sk , mbsob , and googol for their recommendations given on the Greenwich thread. Next Stop: NCL airport early tomorrow morning. |
Ah. I will stay there in October. Will be intersting to read your "pre-report".

Lovely place, and very welcoming people. Enjoy!

Spent eight days traveling around Slovenia, with two days in Ljubljana, in June 2025. Absolutely beautiful country, friendly people, and quite affordable.
About 30 years ago, the small municipal government that I worked for initiated a Sister City relationship with Bled, Slovenia - an agreement that was terminated by the city council after only a few years. My traveling companion and I were active in the Sister City program during the brief tenure. Our trip was her sixth and my fifth. |
Good morning from a slightly foggy Newcastle airport. Last week I forgot to stop by the 90 years celebration display, remembered to stop this time! The display is in the space between the two buildings.

Time for a little bit of breakfast in the aspire lounge. I’m all back of the bus this weekend and I forgot to order BoB so no Jolly Hog roll for me this morning…
I’m sure you can work out where this is heading! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f6af51363.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e3908f8c0.jpeg That hit the spot! |
Well, it’s a good job I didn’t order BoB, a lovely gate upgrade to Business this morning :)
A new tail number for me this morning, on this 1 year old A321neo https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7a072bf86.jpeg A surprisingly long distance refuelling, especially as the tanker driver insisted that the mobile steps move first and then didn’t move the tanker! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70d962789.jpeg Lots of pre-boards today, five needing mobility assistance, definitely the most I’ve ever seen at Newcastle |
Boarding started with twenty minutes to go and again I was recognised by the gate agent and allowed through immediately following the wheelchairs.
I’ve been gifted seat 5A today so the leg room is not great but I’m not going to complain :) https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a36ea9bff.jpeg I’m not sure how the cleaning crew missed this https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...38171e366.jpeg Yes, it will be coming home with me :D As I mentioned earlier, a pretty new A321neo today, G-TNEE, which is a new tail number for me. After months and months with no new planes suddenly they’re coming thick and fast! Refuelling is done, boarding is well underway, looking like a reasonably on time departure so far. One lady has just come past “all the middle seats have got trays!”, “why have the middle seats got trays?” I’m sure she’ll work it out, maybe. |
That was an exceptional flight! It started with the flight lead greeting all of those with gold status or higher, a real rarity on the express routes. As he was finishing saying hi the lady in 5C asked him about getting a SkyFlyer log book signed for her daughter in 5D. I had already spotted a CREW tag on her bag and so I asked if she was BA crew and this opened up a conversation that lasted the entire flight. An absolutely delightful lady and the flight passed in the blink of an eye.
Standard fare for Club Europe breakfast. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8589bf604.jpeg And the morning trio https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...18bc24f19.jpeg We have landed on time and I’m now heading to the CRC… that is not a typo :) |
Bon voyage!

Mission accomplished https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20e9a4e8f.jpeg Time to head to T3 |
It has taken a full hour to get to T3. I had just missed the train and it was a 15 minute wait for the next one, and then the T3 fast track security was completely backed up.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...094b9e6f3.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...49441c295.jpeg Over to the BA lounge eventually via the Jude’s freezer https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f282a53a8.jpeg It is the first time I have seen this menu and it’s probably the worst fit ever to my tastes https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3a72c5b3b.jpeg I declare today to be backwards dining day, and have ordered a desert :D. Before that, a twisted trio of drinks https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f566b1679.jpeg |
When the desert arrived and after I took the first bite I remembered that I’d tried this before. More chew than choux was my previous description and today’s dish was exactly that.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e5e8fbc6e.jpeg Champagne finished, it was time to head off to my favourite lounge. Happy to report that Cathay is open for other airlines and it is actually really quiet. There are only six people in the first class dining area, including myself. I’ve taken a liking to Asahi recently so a beer to start with whilst I peruse the menu https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f353d013b.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...adc263543.jpeg Today is the first time I’ve seen this kitsch afternoon tea trolley in the lounge, it really does not fit the aesthetic! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f69c3e28.jpeg |
Excellent food as usual.
Fish and chips… I know, I know, but I just fancied it instead of the normal Nasi Goreng rice. Then Bao bun and then prawn toast. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9f39f463f.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0116e7802.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ce32b7b7f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f1e13344b.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...54271dd46.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...920d032ed.jpeg Confession time, there may have been multiple orders of the prawn toast :D |
Fully sated with the excellent Cathay lounge food, the next stop was AA first. I freely admit that the primary reason for this stop was to top up on sweeties! There was no food that caught my eye and the at seat dining was equally uninteresting
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5112ae4fd.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...02d095acb.jpeg A swift glass of Moet and then it was back to BA first dining for a coffee and a cognac. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...613dcfa80.jpeg On the way I stopped off at guest services to check out the Airport Upgrade price and it was surprisingly low (£109). When I was told 1F was free I took BA up on its generous offer. This ‘all back of the bus’ trip has a surprising lack of back-of-the-bus-ness so far :D |
