We really missed each other. You left Berlin as I arrived and I left Berlin when you come back.

Nice report . Good A3 flights and lovely lounges.
The trains look interesting also. Hotels a bit dated but did the job. Good way to rack up some miles / TPs . :tu:

Thanks for reading. Yeah, A3 were great as usual and the hotel on the farm was very nice. Hotel Boss is what it is. I wish they’d get softer mattresses though. ;)

Yeah we really did miss each other both ways by just a few hours. There’s always a next time though. :)

So to wrap up, I’m back in Berlin. No further pics, as I was working all the way, the train was slightly delayed and Hauptbahnhof was mental. I picked up the car and drove to meet my family. Nice to see them again.

Thanks all for following on with my adventures. I’ll try and do a live report on my next trip but I don’t have anything planned right now. Time to get playing with booking engines I think. :D

Thoroughly enjoyed you report, looking forward to the next one. Definitely time to give Google flights a workout :)

Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. It was certainly fun putting it together. Trips might be limited for the moment, as we have a big summer road trip planned but that will be harder to report on, as the family will be along for the ride. I’ll have to see if I can wangle a hall pass to go to the Christmas party in December. :D

Hmm, how did I miss this TR? I enjoyed reading it, thank you.
shocking, your train was on time! Very unusual 🤣
as I was reading I was wondering iif there is a flight from Larnaca to Zilina. If yes, I would definitely buy the ticket 😁
the main train station in Bratislava is horrible. Not what a capital city should have

Thanks for reading! Yes, all of my trains were on time on this occasion. I get the impression that ZSSK have really improved their punctuality recently. My trains have all been on time the last few times I have been down there now. Oh how I wish there were flights to Zilina, it would make my life so much easier. To quote the boss of the company “This place is s**t to get to but you manage to make it really s**t!” 🤣🤣

I totally agree about Bratislava station. It’s so bad. I couldn’t believe how nice Kosice is the first time I travelled through there. I really hope that Zilina ends up as nice when they’re finished. They’re doing a massive job there at the moment.

Fabo.sk Jun 13, 2025 9:01 am

Interesting you think Kosice is nice.

It's better than Bratislava, for sure, but in my opinion, it it not a good station. The lack of escalators to the platform is hardly excusable on a station of this size in 2025, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no plan to improve access to the outer rails of Platform 3, which are used for some local trains, and are absolutely not up to the standard.

The station building, at least, is in a good shape and offers a good mix of services to passengers.

gpb_croppers63 Jun 13, 2025 5:06 pm

You make some very valid points and perhaps what I should have said is “As far as Slovak stations go, Kosice is really nice”. ;) It’s just generally a much more pleasant environment and feels safer than Bratislava and the old station in Zilina before they closed it.

I do however agree that platform access is very poor. I only travel with hand luggage on these trips so it’s never a problem but I could see it being a big issue if you had larger, heavier luggage.

Regarding platform 3, I was totally unaware of how bad it was until I saw the Regiojet night train to Prague that left shortly before mine and realised that it was actually at a “platform” for boarding and not in a siding waiting to be brought to a real platform. That was crazy and I saw one guy miss it, as he had no idea where to go when he got to the top of the stairs at platform 3 and saw no train there. Just as he worked out that he had to cross the tracks to get to his train, it left! He did not look happy. ;) So yeah, Kosice isn’t great at all but it is way nicer than other stations I’ve used in Slovakia. :D

Fabo.sk Jun 14, 2025 11:33 am

OK yes, I will give you that. It's a good station for Slovakia standards :) which are unfortunately very low...

gpb_croppers63 Jun 17, 2025 6:19 pm

Let’s hope they improve in the near future. :)

So after a really pleasant journey to Kosice on a really quiet, on-time train, it was time to grab some dinner before the main event. Unfortunately, the kebab shop I’d researched earlier decided to close early and so I ended up being stuck with a Greek-style panini from the station bistro, which was the only place around/open. It was quite nice but not what I was expecting. I may have to try the room service on the night train. ;)

The platform was announced nice and early so I went up to find my carriage hadn’t even arrived yet. Soon after, it was coupled up and I could board. I’d seen online that one of the sleeper carriages had been replaced by a couchette carriage but that was the next carriage along fortunately. I’d have been very annoyed if that had been mine, as the last time I did a night train, my carriage was out of service and I ended up having to share a couchette with a family of 3 which was a nightmare. Not because they were noisy but because you just have no space and privacy. The “beds” are also like ironing boards so I’m glad I was spared that this time.

I’m on the night train now in a single compartment with private toilet and shower. A bargain for €166 including the first class section from Prague to Berlin. We depart in 10 minutes and arrive in Prague at 07:51.

I hope that you were not running after the back of your early departure carriage! :D

No, I wasn't. I was waiting for the next part of the train to be connected. :D

Thanks for reading! :)
