It's always the good-bye trip that leaves the best impression, in my experience.

This weekends hostelry is the Hilton Garden inn in the old town. I’ve not stayed here before and it is not too bad at all

Vorel friendly deserts are going to be a challenge I think. I’d recommend checking out Cathay first dining and the first pantry, they definitely have a real variety of desserts. Also worth popping into Cathay bisiness and checking out the buffet as I’ve noticed in the past that there can be different desserts there.

If all else fails there’s always the first dining sorbet!

Good morning from a beautifully sunny Bucharest where the skies are blue and everyone is wearing heavy coats so I assume it is a bit brisk outside.

It is now approaching 10am local and I slept like a baby! No tearing rush to do anything today, the first stop is the restaurant to enjoy the Complimentary breakfast courtesy of Hilton Diamond

A small gluten free offering

Not the best breakfast spread I’ve seen in Bucharest, but not bad, and there is an egg cooking station for pancakes, waffles, and omelette that I think will be my choice of the morning. Strangely I’m not that hungry this morning, I wonder why? ;)

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 2:55 am

A little bit of local research… this map probably covers 15 minutes walk to the furthest point. Only challenge will be the wide variety of opening times, from noon at the earliest to 6pm at the latest… chances are that one will get skipped :D

Stop Two: Csikisor

They brew 11 different beers here, of which six are on tap. These range from a 1.2% blueberry beer through light lagers and on to a 7% dark beer.

Really friendly staff, happy to explain all the beers and the history of the tractor!

This is GOOD! Very easy drinking and tastes great.

The food menu is in the form of a newspaper and they have a recommended beer for every dish

The international menu versions are online

darthlemsip hard to judge atmosphere at not even 1pm on a Sunday but with beer this good and staff this friendly I definitely recommend putting this one on the list.

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 4:05 am

The Gold lager was so good that I had to stay and try another, this time the dark beer. I’m no fan of stouts but have had a number of dark beers here in Romania and they’ve all been good. This one is equally tasty, a meal in a glass :)

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...34ee1290f.jpeg

Edit: The bill, bargain!

Silver Fox Oct 20, 2024 4:53 am

Loving this.....

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 4:58 am

Beer three is the Experimental Helles. These are beers that they make only once. This one was a bit odd, it had a tang I just could not identify, almost cabbage without being nasty, if that makes any sort of sense what so ever!

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d9ba50ce5.jpeg

And the bill

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...64085abe1.jpeg

Edit: All three beers were lightly hoppy, and for me they were a bit Meh! Not awful, but equally not somewhere I’d seek out again.

Well now you mention it! :) I just had a brain check and was checking the prices you were paying: 7p a pint.....nah that's not right and nor was my geography, Bucharest is in Romania not Hungary <deep sigh>! It nicely sums up my week which is why I am so enjoying this TR.

The fact that you can still spell incomprehensible means you haven’t had enough yet. 🤣

You know, JapesUK, we should join forces on a joint trip report. We could see who falls under the table first!

Stop Four: Ironic taproom

Ironically this has absolutely no signage apart from the Tephra sign outside, go figure!

A real spit and sawdust place

No receipt as this is a pay at the bar place but 22 Lei for two small beers as one of them is the most expensive on the board at 15 lei per 100ml

The emergency meeting IPA and the Wild Thyme Saison which is a ‘2022 vintage’ at close to £15 a pint.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c79da8bab.jpeg

I’d like to say that the wild thyme was amazing but alas no, it definitely tasted very strongly of thyme, very weird! The emergency meeting was very drinkable. This is definitely the hangout for the Romanian version of the CAMRA crowd.

Stop five: No Room taproom

First fail of the day, doesn’t open until 5pm

atcodave Oct 20, 2024 6:17 am

Wouldn’t be a Japes TR without at least one venue closure!

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 6:24 am

Stop Six: Zaganu

Quite a walk from the last hostelry and onto the Calea Victoriei, one of the main drags in Bucharest

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...43ade0d3e.jpeg

Beer here is only served by the 400ml glass and so I’ve
stuck with the Zaganu Pilsner that I’ve had before

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8e4a17fc4.jpeg

And they have a hotdog heater IYKYK

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c4565fac3.jpeg

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 6:51 am

Approaching four hours into the wander and it is time to find some food to help with soaking up the beer. It’s a 17 minute walk to the next venue so let’s see what we pass along the way.

GoBob Oct 20, 2024 6:55 am

Appreciate seeing the variety. Most American craft breweries offer nothing but umpteen versions of an IPA. Your palette would be destroyed by stop #2.

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 7:26 am

Stop Six: Hop hooligans

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cce6cb598.jpeg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cbd289a15.jpeg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d289fc029.jpeg
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f027ccbfb.jpeg

Beers of choice here have been the Every Day is Pretzel Day and the Empire of Light

Surprisingly, the empire of light was my favourite of the two, clean and fruity, did not expect that.

No real food options on the way here so it is a tub of beer chips to keep me going. These are pretty nasty, ate one, left the rest!

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4a4b75246.jpeg

Edit: and the receipt

Variety is definitely not an issue here as you can see from the menu boards, there’s a massive selection.

I’ve not been out and about in America specifically for beer but I remeber in Toronto it was many many IPA versions

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 7:54 am

The next planned stop is Beer O’clock which is not open until 5pm. Checking the map I noticed that it is no distance at all from Hanu Lui Manoc. Yes, this place is a tourist trap, but the last time I was here the Mici were outstanding

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...52a7c3d4a.jpeg

A coffee to keep the caffeine demons at bay and an Ursus black as I’ve not tried this one before.

Mici

Definitely needed this, I just realised that the only thing I’ve eaten until now was about a third of the breakfast omelette. Time to tuck in.

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 9:57 am

Pushing on for seven hours into the grand wander and I’m all hopped out. I’ve actually come full circle and the hotel was only five minutes away and so its back to the room and time to put my feet up

Fabo.sk Oct 20, 2024 2:31 pm

Interesting walk. I'm honestly not sure if I would have the stamina for it anymore.

Also I had no idea Csiki sor was Erdelyi! I first encountered it in my local Hungarian restaurant (RIP) and then in a couple of places in Hungary and adjacent.... The logo makes a lot more sense now!

JapesUK Oct 20, 2024 3:16 pm

If you were wondering, no, I did not fall off the edge of the planet, nor into a beer induced coma. I’ve been chilling out and catching up with FT, and more recently, adding a wiki to the Favourite YouTuber thread on the BA forum, a piece of work I regretted starting by the time I was half way through!

It’s a touch after midnight so obviously no more plans for the night beyond bed and sleep!

Good morning from another beautiful sunny day here in Bucharest. Having been awake for the last couple of hours it is now 09:20 local and in around ten minutes I need to head off for my 10am dentists call.

Plan of the day is pretty simple after that, straight to the airport because I will have my baggage with me, the dentists is en route to the airport. That will mean probably far too long hanging around in OTP before I start the journey home on the 15:30 to LHR

See you in OTP.
