Going for gold in Malaga

This weekends fun and frolics is a long weekend to Malaga to finally crawl over the line to Flying Blue Gold status. These flights were booked an absolute age ago and in retrospect I should have deferred them even further as I will not have need of the gold status for a few months but it’s a first world problem and not one I shall lose sleep over.

Outbound is KLM NCL-AMS-AGP tomorrow and the return is AF AGP-CDG-NCL on Monday and if everything goes to schedule there will be time for a wander around both the Air France and KLM lounges respectively.

I only flew a handful of times on both AF and KLM last year and was pleased by the in flight service and generally horrified by the food, especially KLMs cardboard box and bamboo utensils so we shall see what this weekend brings.

It’s a 6am departure so once again I have booked the doubletree airport hotel for the evening and I am writing this from the Uber as we head to the hotel in the dark.

Weather in Malaga is around 16 Centigrade so it will be a nice escape from the snow and sub-zero temperatures we have been experiencing in the North of England of late.

And because I am hopelessly slow typing and editing on the phone the airport is already in sight.

Next Stop, Newcastle airport.

JapesUK Jan 19, 2024 10:55 am

Checked in and up to the room which is a bit more traditional than last weeks funky layout.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fc1888b81.jpeg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a990fa212.jpeg

Standard array of goodies, and I even remembered to take the cookie out of my pocket this week! By the way, these warm cookies smell amazing, its a fun thing to greet guests with.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f8f589da.jpeg

One small issue with the rooms here, there are no USB sockets. I have made the schoolboy error of buying a new multi travel adaptor and not testing it before bringing it on a trip, and its dead. Luckily I always bring two, but the second one only has a single port so there may be a bit of airport shopping tomorrow. For tonight I’ve a fully charged brick so that will get me by.

On the way to the room I passed a sign to the gym so did a slight detour to check it out.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...00345c696.jpeg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e2833c5fe.jpeg

And then down to the bar that was completely packed. No seats in the lobby overflow area either so I’ve wandered across the reception to the restaurant drinks area.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0c5f4697d.jpeg

And with that update it is time to enjoy this fine brew and catch up with the world for a little while.

With my usual stunning powers of observation I had failed to recognise this huge pizza oven during previous visits!

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4508e49d9.jpeg

Obviously this made the main course choice simple, and I have opted for the meat feast pizza preceded by the firecracker chicken wings as a starter.

Is it just me or is the finger bowl very retro? I’m so used to getting the foil wrapped hand wipes these days that the lemon bath feels like a real throwback! The chicken wings were delicious, and a bit like padron peppers… the first three were tasty but without heat and then the fourth blew my socks off!

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1f979c1a8.jpeg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d3baee119.jpeg

If the pizza is as good as the wings I will be very happy.

The restaurant is busier than I’ve seen it on my previous trips, in fact I never made it to a table in the restaurant itself, I’m sat in a booth in the drinks area and our server is run off her feet as almost every table occupied.

JapesUK Jan 19, 2024 1:19 pm

Pizza arrived and, well, it’s definitely a plate full

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...dbabb5c12.jpeg

Again, really very well done, each meat was identifiable and full of flavour. Once I had eaten a couple of slices I realised the crust was going to be a challenge so I requested a pot of the blue cheese dip that came with the gunpowder chicken wings and this worked surprisingly well with the pizza and is my recommendation of the week :)

Servers choice for desert again and she has chosen the caramel churros. If you do not have a sweet tooth then these are not for you! Luckily I have a very sweet tooth albeit that I try not to indulge it too often, and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e410fa3fe.jpeg

And with that its time to wander off to the bar for a nightcap and then off to bed for an early night.

Next stop - Newcastle airport in a little over eight hours time

DaveNCL Jan 19, 2024 2:32 pm

So this time it’s the other way around! I’m on the inbound to your outbound tomorrow morning. Currently boarding and looking like we will be on time so you should be ok tomorrow.

Just caught up on your Milan TR which I started on Sunday and then everything got a little busy….

Enjoy Malaga.

One of these days our schedules will merge :) Glad you were out on time, KL clearly the better option late Fridays!

JapesUK Jan 19, 2024 10:10 pm

Another 2am start to the day although this morning the reason was obvious. Breakfast was a couple of Imodium :)

Bored with the hotel by 4:30 I took the short stroll over to what appeared to be a very quiet airport, and looks can definitely be deceiving

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6fe9e3da3.jpeg

Very glad not to be on Jet2 this morning

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1bfa085b1.jpeg

Renovations are clearly ongoing within the departures area and the coffee shop is the latest part of the concourse to be boarded up.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...65da2024b.jpeg

Security was definitely improved this morning, rejection rate from the scanners was in the order of 10% but of course mine was part of that 10%. A new wrinkle, there was nobody manning secondary security and so we stood staring at our bags for a good five minutes whilst various staff wandered back and forth.

Eventually someone appeared and the iPad received what is becoming an almost mandatory swab and away I went.

Fifteen minutes from land-side to lounge is impressive by any airports standards and we are spoiled at Newcastle by how quick it is.

Into the lounge and no fizz this morning! After the unsettled start to the day I decided to play it safe for a little bit

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...58c1968a7.jpeg

Still the standard food offering, not expecting this to change until phase two of the renovations are complete. Again decided not to partake, will see what KLM have to offer, or may even wait until Schiphol, in either event I’ll not starve.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f2501646.jpeg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a088fd041.jpeg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...237fa8383.jpeg

And with that update it’s about 25 minutes to boarding so time to enjoy the coffee and watch the world go by.

JapesUK Jan 19, 2024 10:53 pm

Gate announced at 05:30 and a short stroll to gate 20 where boarding is already in progress. Straight through the sky priority lane and a walk up gate to this mornings conveyance

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...768eedd08.jpeg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0644c68a1.jpeg

Five rows in the business cabin this morning and I’m the only business passenger :D. The back of the plane is also pretty quiet so should be a nice easy start for the in flight team before their Geneva and back later today.

We are now all on board and the doors are closed and it is still 12 minutes to our scheduled departure.

I have just been offered a blanket and a pillow which I laughingly declined after asking ‘do I look that old’ :D

A Pre-departure soft drink offered and we are pushing back

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8e87a097d.jpeg

Next stop, Schiphol

Another adventure! I will as usual be following :)

Best wishes for safe travels from a frozen over Chitose airport and its JAL F lounge, which is surprisingly pleasant.

Safe travels and happy landings. Plenty of snow at the side of the runway here in Amsterdam but a balmy -1C, considerably warmer than Chitose

JapesUK Jan 20, 2024 12:54 am

Take off was exactly on time and a little bumpy going up through the clouds however that only lasted a minute and then the Seatbelt sign was switched off and the crew were in motion.

The meal box this morning contained bread, bread, bread, bread, and mixed fruit/nuts :D

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bf68aceb9.jpeg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4c197cb5b.jpeg
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a2b234c0d.jpeg

I gave the pain au chocolat a try and it was very dense and dry. The rest remained uneaten although I did snag the little peppermint for later. Just a coffee to go with it, and I do like those little KLM cookies/biscuits. There are at least three varieties and they’re all very nice.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b409f8c57.jpeg

This flight is barely an hour long so there was time for a second coffee and then the pilots standard announcement and the seat belt sign was on and we were descending into Amsterdam.

I have a four hour transit in Amsterdam so there will be plenty of time for a proper explore of the airport departures area and lounge. It feels like a very long while since I was in Schiphol airport but it is only a couple of months, although the transit times on that trip were pretty short.

A couple of minutes before landing the crew surprised me with this little package… sick bags have more than one use on airplanes, from notepads to broken crockery wrappers, and I thoroughly approve of this particular use :D

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2c75a8b94.jpeg

A vibrant sunrise above the clouds which this photo really does not do justice to

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f702a3e0e.jpeg

We were on the ground at 07:52 local time so a 52 minute flight in total. Quite a long taxi around the airport and into gate D5 a little after 8am Once I took the phone out of airplane mode KLM helpfully informed me that I have 4hrs and 42mins to get to gate C12. Pretty sure I’ll make it :)

Once again a really nice crew, as have been all the crew I have met whilst flying KLM.

JapesUK Jan 20, 2024 1:02 am

And the long march to the KLM crown march begins…

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...337a59855.jpeg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...31b1e57cd.jpeg

I like that the boards show an estimate of time to gate, I do wonder if this is dynamic to account for passport control.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0ca09d484.jpeg

As I made my way though the terminal I spotted this herd of ceramic cows above one of the shops. Shop was apparently unrelated to bovines so not sure of the significance, maybe there is none and they’re just for fun

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...19315c807.jpeg

And next came passport control which was a much much nicer experience than on any of my previous visits, the queue was short and I was through in under 10 minutes

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...855df4ef8.jpeg

I find Schiphol quite characterless and disorienting despite, or maybe because of, the plethora of signage pointing every which where.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0194d7d69.jpeg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...684eb56f9.jpeg

Knowing roughly where I should be going I was up the escalator in Lounge 1 and over to the KLM 25 Crown Lounge

Once in the lounge it was time to muster some provisions. There is a wide choice of food in the lounge although some of it is a little odd to this British palate, the taster of the mustard soup for instance was a spoonful of heck no!

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...79a3b5649.jpeg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cc0c2a4a0.jpeg

In the end it was the standard morning trio and a selection of cold cuts along with a very nice bread.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...074ab6b3a.jpeg

The spoonful of potatoes were a mistake, tried one and it was limp and lukewarm so will be staying on the plate.

All caught up to date now, a good hour and a bit after deplaning, so it’s time to finish off this breakfast and then maybe a little wander around the shops to see if I can find that replacement travel adaptor

etiene Jan 20, 2024 2:08 am

Not an option if you’re stuck with a non-Apple laptop for instance, but I’ve spent years just travelling with just a handful of Apple chargers. The iPad/MacBook bricks with the changeable socket attachments are very handy versus a travel adapter IME. They’re also likely to work better, especially in the US where the laughable design of the socket means that any weight or moment means the plug will probably fall right out of the wall!

Enjoy the trip.

Thanks etiene I travel with iPad and iPhone and the only adaptors supplied are the UK standard ones so I don’t lug those around, just have a bag full of cables and a power brick or sometimes two on longer trips, along with a couple of multi adaptors. To be honest it’s not a major issue, I just have to be a bit smarter in sequential charging rather than just jamming everything on charge and forgetting about it all :D

JapesUK Jan 20, 2024 2:30 am

Back in the lounge after about an hours wander around the shops and a stroll down to the C gates. Travel adaptors are about double the online price, no surprise there so I will wait until Monday to order a replacement.

On exiting the lounge the first sight that greeted me was this. This is the passport control experience I am used to in Schiphol

Now tucked away in the corner of the lounge enjoying a small beer and some rice crackers

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8016bc894.jpeg

All the wandering around has made the first two and a half hours of this transit fly by and there is only 90 minutes or so left until it will be time to go to gate.

No further plans until it is time to leave the lounge other than sit back and chill. I don’t know what time the lounge switches over to lunch but if it is 11am I may be back with a few updated buffet pictures, otherwise next update at the gate.

I have this nice product which - with 4x usb ports - lets me charge everything I carry simultaneously from a single power socket almost anywhere in the world (damn you Switzerland!). Available in the electronics shop at Schiphol :-)

edit: I see you spotted how much they overcharge you at Schiphol. Unfortunately I was in an emergency situation when I got mine so had to swallow that...

Oh yes, the price gouging was fairly obvious when the most expensive adaptor was seventy euros! And that didn’t even have four USB ports. It is no different in the UK, pretty much everywhere the prices for travel essentials are horrendous once you are captive airside.

You do have to buy them out separately, true - and of course Apple kit isn't cheap. IME though the adapters are basically indestructible, so one brick and the international travel pack [a collection of different socket attachments] plus one iPhone charger for US and one for EU will cover two devices over the majority of travel destinations. The UK/EU/US sockets just live in my travel backpack front pocket so I never have to think about any of it unless the Wife is bringing her godawful work supplied windows brick...!

Windows Brick, I love it! I managed to snag an X1 Carbon for work, it’s as light as a feather but the downside is I need a telescope if I want to use it stand alone. I’ll definitely look into that travel pack though, don’t mind paying the price if the quality is high.

Flighty is suggesting a ten minute departure delay and a seventeen minute arrival delay so I can only assume that is ATC related as people are streaming on board and we are 30 minutes from planned departure.

For now it is time to buckle up and….

Next stop, Malaga

JapesUK Jan 20, 2024 8:20 am

In counterpoint to the Newcastle flight this morning, the Malaga flight is completely full so there were many announcements for storing baggage.

Flighty turned out to be right and KLM obviously knows how long it takes to board the Malaga plane when it is a full passenger compliment, and the answer is, a LONG time! Finally all on board and doors closed seven minutes after scheduled departure and then the pilots announcement that ATC has given a slot in ten minutes time. Then followed something I had never heard before. ‘We have taken on some extra fuel in order to fly a little bit faster and make up the time’!

Eventually we pushed back around fifteen minutes after our scheduled departures and were in the air another fifteen minutes later.

A three hour flight to Malaga and with four rows in business class there was no great pressure on the crew. Around the twenty minute mark warm towels were distributed and collected. Twenty minutes after the towels the meal and drinks service began. The prawn salad was not to my taste however the little spiced fries were moreish and the macarons very enjoyable. I was surprised to see some hot food on KLM, and the warmed quiche was pretty good. All washed down with a coffee and a small Heineken.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...486db31f0.jpeg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...83fb6c9ae.jpeg

We had company for a short time but we quickly overtook them, the pilots clearly putting all that extra fuel to good use.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...89b3abf51.jpeg

Another first for me on a KLM flight, shortly after the food debris was cleared away the captain came into the business cabin and had a chat with a few people.

Some great view on the way here

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b198de437.jpeg

The rest of the flight was comprised of the final episode of the season of Blacklist that I’ve been watching for quite some time, and the first episode of Reacher season 2 plus one or two more miniature Heineken:)

Driver located eventually as he was nowhere near the pickup spot specified on the text message and now in the car and heading to the hotel. The one surprise on landing is that it has been raining heavily for the past couple of hours. According to the driver it was really warm this morning and then the heavens opened. It is still looking very overcast and threatening but I’m not too concerned as I have no plans this evening aside from a very early night!

JapesUK Jan 20, 2024 8:55 am

By the time we reached the hotel the rain was falling again. Check in was quick and easy and up to the room. I’m not overly enthused by the room, it’s a bit minimalist for my taste but I’m only here two nights so not really an issue

The view from the room

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5ec6b00bb.jpeg

I think it’s time for a little wander around downstairs and then a nap as I will admit to being a little tired and grumpy now with the dodgy start to the day.

I hadn’t quite realised the time, it is rapidly approaching 6pm so rather than a nap I think I will hang it out for a couple of hours and then get an early night.

A quick glance at the menu and they have ‘ham and eggs’ with padron peppers. The last time I had this was in a backstreet bar in Madrid maybe five or six years ago and, hopefully, will be just the thing to help me towards a food coma :)

Good, of course 🙃.

You need to visit Malaga again in summer so you can enjoy a lot of sunshine.

Japes, another excellent report thank you.

May I ask, what did you do with all your free time before you wrote such excellent trip reports ;)

And…. Massive change of plan. It’s an indicator of just how off my game I am, I had booked a tapas tour! Thankfully the guide called me just as I was about to order!

Made the first stop only just and a very nice vermut later and we are on our way

And we’re done. It was a very social group and people bonded and were chatting throughout. This doesn’t always happen so it’s always good to see and make for a much more fun experience.

Back at the hotel now and a coffee and a local brandy to close off the night. The pour size this evening was ‘everything left in the bottle’ :D

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6573de111.jpeg

Tonights tour was called the Genuine Malaga Wine and Tapas Tour and it is highly recommended. Our guide was knowledgable and gregarious and really added to the experience.

A recap of the night and the various dishes

Stop one was for a glass of Vermut. The bar was crazy busy, obviously the place to see and be seen but the Vermut was tasty although it was served with lemon and I am more used to it being with orange. Because I was really late I didn’t have much time to dwell over it before we were leaving.

Stop two was Donde Carlos and in Post 33 you can see our guide, the waiter, and Carlos himself. The guys were on top form during this stop and it was a lot of fun. We had the meat and cheese plate accompanied by a glass of manzanilla. Again, highly recommended.

Stop three was El Gallo Ronco where we had padron peppers, prawns in garlic and chilli, and pork loin. All three dishes were good and I introduced my neighbour at the table into the society of ‘keep the prawns, gimme the oil! :)

Last stop of the night was Eme and again great fun staff. Dishes were a fish soup made with a mayonnaise base, ham croquettes but not as you’ve ever had them before, and an incredibly rich paella. I asked about paella being a lunch dish and the explanation given was that it is a demonstration dish on the tour… not sure I buy that.

All in all a really good a filling evening and a great way to spend three and a half hours.

Good morning from what may or may not become a sunny Malaga day

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...16093ad45.jpeg

Having been awake for part of the night I’ve slept late this morning.

An amusing start to the day, the hotel extends breakfast until noon on Sunday for those who want a weekend lay in. Housekeeping ensures you have no chance by opening the room door without knocking at 08:50 and shouting into the room to see if you are still there!

I was already up and about by this time so found it amusing, may have had a different opinion if I was still asleep!

Down to breakfast and it is a massive spread and my choices to start were obvious
