The last two weeks of running around and burning the candle at both ends have obviously had an effect, no sooner had I returned to the room and sat on the bed than I was asleep for another near 3 hours!
Just tackled the clothes pressing with this bizarre Heath Robinson built in contraption of combination iron, mini-board, trouser press, and storage all attached with a rail and rod system. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...262d225a4.jpeg Product testing was clearly performed by a small child as the mini ironing board is completely unsuited to pressing mens shirts. 3 just about pressed shirts later, packed it away again which was nowhere near as easy as you might expect! The afternoon is gone, the sun is low, and the lounge has far better coffee than the room, so it is time to head up there and see what the evening food options are before deciding whether to partake or try out one of the four on site restaurants. |
My Romanian friend was commenting on the lack of anything fizzy today, a situation that I am happy to correct
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...04fbc08ab.jpeg And this is the drinks section fully stocked, unlike last nights end of night photo. Drinks service runs for a very generous 5 hours, 5pm to close of lounge at 10 pm. If it has not changed I expect food will be 6pm to 8pm. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c23bd0946.jpeg |
Food arrived spot on time and is, frankly, a little bizarre. On previous visits it’s never been extensive, but it has at least been cohesive, unlike this triumvirate with no independant starch.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3ac62d72c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b61e313f7.jpeg I tried a couple of pieces of the beef which were barely luke walm, albeit tender and tasty. An odd and disappointing spread, especially when you contrast and compare against breakfast. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8e22e79a2.jpeg However this does present the opportunity to go try out one of the restaurants. I’d love to try the sushi restaurant but according to the web it is closed on a Sunday so I think it is time for a gentle stroll across the pool area to the Mediterranean restaurant. |
Ah. I had an experience with the same contraption in Bratislava earlier this year (I think it was). Not helped by the fact that it managed to detach itself from the closet it was in... and ended up not working anyway. The solution, at the end of the day, was laughably simple - a quick call to the reception, and a proper full size ironing board with a working steam iron showed up in minutes.
re. Bucharest, can't help myself but the city does nothing for me. I like a lot of the smaller regional cities in Romania, but Bucharest... it's just a failed experiment and I simply can't. |

Tonights restaurant in Sharkia, attached to the Radisson Park hotel, itself attached to the Radisson Blu. it is a lot smaller than I would have expected.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2536ec8d9.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d98be4128.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9cb620d12.jpeg The restaurant is two floors down from the pool which, it turns out, is street level for this side of the hotel, highly confusing :). Entrance poolside leads into the rather nice looking breakfast area. A glass elevator and glass stairs lead down to the Radisson park entrance and the restaurant just off of the reception area. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f2be78896.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f1b43d31.jpeg I’m a huge fan of the art installation…. fan.. geddit? ;) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6c62667b9.jpeg The menus are extensive and readily available online so I will not photograph and post them here. |
A very palatable Chardonnay and the first course is here, the Sharkia Kebab. If a restaurant puts its name to a dish it’s always worth a try. This is actually listed as a main course but as I’m taking a bit of a risk on the second dish I’m playing the long game of not going to bed hangry :D
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8daf04548.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...16e176fcd.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6db112566.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c90c99abe.jpeg Menu section with todays two dishes https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9e6943136.jpeg worth noting that this restaurant is #15 in Bucharest at the moment |
The first dish has been and gone and I have to say that it was a very clever dish for something so apparently simple. On opening the pita crust there is a billowing of steam that promises the enclosed kofta are going to be moist, which indeed they were. The first couple of mouthfuls were disappointingly bland and there was an oh dear moment until I dug further into the bowl to the sauce hiding all around.
The pita lid quickly hardened to the point where you had to submerge it i to the sauce before eating. I am assuming this is by design because after a short dunk soaking up sauce it was an excellent accompaniment to the koftas. Now armed with a glass of local Sauvignon Blanc the second course has arrived, the beef and pomegranate with jasmine rice. This is a risk for me as I’m told its a very sweet dish but nothing ventured, nothing gained! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...191b18669.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b9f116edb.jpeg |
The second dish was delicious, nowhere near as sweet as the server had led me to believe, or he underestimated my sweet tooth! For desert I’ve gone for the Knafe with Kadaif noodles as I cannot remember the last time I had it. Back to the original Bogdan Chardonnay to accompany it as there are no real sweet wine offerings by the glass.
Whilst dining I’ve had the unmitigated pleasure of listening to two American grand dames on the table behind me who have been hilarious. Impossible to recount all of it but a flavour.. a thirty minute conversation around a hot green Chinese mustard resulting in asking the server of this Mediterranean restaurant if he had any. When he replied in the negative and suggested they meant wasabi the answer was - oh no, this mustard is green. A later discussion was around the value of the local dollar and whether a dollar, geographic location of said dollar unspecified, was sufficient as a tip, this went on for a good 20 minutes. I was really struggling by this point and they finally broke me with the extended discussion of the benefits of flying back to new yoik on BA upper deck, first class, and the “reclining seats” I had to go outside to release my laughter. |

Absolutely huge and a total sugar overload, I had to throw in the towel less than half way through! And with that its time to head back to the lounge for a nightcap or two. Dentists at 10am, 3 hour pre-sales phone-call tomorrow afternoon, so not going to be many updates tomorrow, |
Hope you won't be out of it after the dentists for the call.
Your mention of local wine made me realize I don't think I've had any, expect one glass of house wine in a small bistro in Oradea earlier this year, which was quite nice. I barely ever thought about Romanian winemaking, though the country is well positioned to be making some excellent wine, both in the north, but especially in the south. On the other hand, I am a big fan of another grape product of theirs - if you have a chance to give a try to the Alexandrion brandy (the 7*) or Brâncoveanu, do take it. They represent a very good product especially for the price. |

Other fermented products are growing on me, but I’m yet to develop any tolerance to them as evidenced by a very messy food tour on my last trip where everyone decided to sample each and every tuica and palinca in the restaurant. A great time was had by one and all but the end result was not pretty! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7b31cf4fd.jpeg |
Good luck with the dentist. You've just reminded me I once woke in SGN at 0400 Christmas morning with raging tooth ache. That led to a root canal a week or so later.

A slow and lazy start to the day, The hotel was still in night mode as I wandered up to the lounge for coffee and pastries and here is a rather blurry photo of all the illuminated balconies around this 8 storey atrium.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...91badbc6c.jpeg I did promise a full tour around the hotel but over the weekend all of the public areas have been packed. I am bound to wake up at stupid o’clock one morning and I’ll take a stroll around before everyone is on the move. Breakfast was exactly the same as yesterday, I don’t think it really varies day to day although I have recollections of fried onion and pepper mix appearing once on a previous trip. It has been heavily raining overnight but looks like it is easing off which is good news, means I can enjoy the 40 minute walk to the surgery rather than having to grab a Bolt. 9am and time for a final wash and brush up before heading off to the dental surgery. I have just realised I didn’t ask how long todays session is! Hopefully not so long that it overruns the planned conference call, but that’s not beyond the realms of possibility, there have been some really long sessions along the way. |
The streets were surreally quiet for 9:30am on a Monday, so quiet that I had to check the date and time
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...386d75e1b.jpeg And with a damp and dreary thirty minute I’m back in the pink palace for the next few hours. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...eff88824f.jpeg Not sure exactly how many hours I have spent in this chair but suffice to say MANY didn’t take any pictures of the sights along the walk as it was so damp, hopefully will have cleared by the time I walk back |
A little bump in the road has made for a very long day at the dentist, in fact the day has basically gone, it is rapidly approaching 5pm local time. My dentist did a superb job of attaching the temporary crowns I have been wearing for the past months. Such a superb job in fact that no amount of banging, hammering, or leveraging would get any of them to move! Having tried every tool in the toolbox, and some from elsewhere, in the end she had to admit defeat and drill out and destroy all of them which meant that they all had to be remade on the fly to cover for the next two weeks. This also means that I need to go in on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday afternoon so my planned trip to Bran and Peles castles is scuppered and some replanning is required. It may actually work to my advantage as I now need to do a whole series of work calls over the next few days so I’ll ultimately be able to reclaim a couple of holiday days.
I’ve a call at 5pm and then it will be off to the lounge. Stomach is growling mightily as its had nothing since 8am’s coffee and pastries. A few snaps on the wander back to the hotel https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b1db103d8.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0bf730dbc.jpeg Jurassic Bucharest https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...68bbd8a5f.jpeg Not the sort of birds you want to find at the end of your garden https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4158cf77c.jpeg A giraffe, obviously, because, why not? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...130f36813.jpeg Crazy enormouse road junction, goes all the way back to the trees. At least 20 lanes join the huge expanse and it always has a few carloads of whistle happy police managing it https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1d243c1b3.jpeg Fascinating little park full of heads https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4aa334e30.jpeg The route from the hotel to dental clinic and back is very green and leafy, and the streets are spotlessly clean, but the graffiti and tagging is relentless! Everywhere you look high, low, or underfoot, some spraycan happy joker has been there before. Its such a shame. |
Work call completed and its time to head to the lounge. The now obligatory glass of fizz to commence proceedings lest I be chastised by my friend
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5ec30baa0.jpeg Then a tasting of the local white available in the lounge which was not really for me https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d9fe451e5.jpeg By which time the food had made an appearance and was somewhat more cohesive this time with a turkey in gravy, potato wedges/chips, and salmon https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...68d5b62e4.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0f4dee7e8.jpeg I chose a small plate of the turkey and potatoes which served two purposes. Firstly it stopped my stomach from growling like a psychopathic guard dog, and secondly I still intend to visit the sushi restaurant and so this small meal will ensure I don’t ravage the menu like the starving barbarian I would have been, allowing a more measured approach, and a far lighter wallet hit :D. The local rose went remarkably well with the turkey, probably as the sauce was on the sweeter side. The turkey and potatoes were exactly OK, greatly helped by a liberal application of salt and pepper. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1437a5505.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...09ae02a72.jpeg And finally, a trio of desert bites, a goats cheese amuse bouche (sue me) :) and a glass of the very potable fizz to close off the first part of the evening, all accompanied by a double espresso - not something I drink often but as a caffeine addict I suspect the headache I’m currently enduring has as much to do with withdrawal as dental hammerings. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8b9fc37ef.jpeg Update: That innocent looking dark chocolate bite hid an immense amount tongue tingling chilli. It was so hot that I had to request a second one just to be sure :) |

Ginger Sushi Bar and lounge
Time for sushi
Ginger sushi bar and lounge entrance is at the back of the hotel, beside the pool area entrance. The restaurant features a live cooking station which you are welcome to sit at but I was not prepared to horrify the chefs in the way I treat their creations and so I chose a table towards the rear of the restaurant https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...00af29d5e.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ec7de032f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f5247ebbc.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9689aa266.jpeg These cloths are always fun https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3d518f7ff.jpeg on the way to the table I passed the shelf of many dangers https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...254c7624a.jpeg I ended up in a brain freeze, unable to decide whether to have the beef as tataki or with noodles. Server to the rescue and the order of play is the Gyu Tataki, Volcano Maki, and Tori Yaki Noodles. continuing the exploration of the local wines I’ve picked a glass of the Valahorum Feteasca Alba which is light and refreshing and will make a good foil to the early dishes. |
The first two dishes have been and gone and were absolutely delicious.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ea99e3a6a.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e35ef5cfb.jpeg The tiny balsamic pearls on the beef were stunningly good once I remembered to break them, the whole thing was superb. Now ordered a glass of the Regno Recas Sauvignon Blanc to accompany the noodles |
The Sauvignon Blanc was a complete flop, I can only describe it as boring. Wakefield Promised Land also by the glass and a much nicer glass and went well with the chicken noodles
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bd1527886.jpeg The food has been delicious, the best meal I have had in Bucharest. Unfortunately this means I must try the deserts, just for completeness, you understand. |
All of the deserts sounded excellent and so it was servers choice again and she chose the Caramel Toffee which was light and fluffy and an excellent end to a fantastic meal.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8ee0ec14e.jpeg A meal this good deserved a cognac (any excuse) and so I am sat with a Remy Martin XO and a cappuccino and, I know I’m repeating myself, to close out the best meaI I have had across all my Bucharest trips. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d11a93ce9.jpeg Also worth calling out the impeccable service which was the absolute perfect mix of unobtrusive yet attentive. Total bill was close to £100 however a goodly chunk of that was the cognac and I consider tonight very good value for the quality of the food I have enjoyed. Don’t think I have ever used that many superlatives in a single update but all of them well deserved. |
A well deserved dinner after a harrowing day at the dentist.

I have promised some views of the hotel and as today is the day I wake up at stupid o’clock here we are. 4am and the hotel is deserted, the lights are low, and security are suspicious - but eventually decided I was harmless if somewhat eccentric.
This Radisson Blu bills itself as the largest 5 star hotel in Bucharest and I can quite believe it. When you add in the adjoining Radisson Park Inn this hotel is immense. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...917db0656.jpeg The view from the hotel entrance. Aristocool is the restaurant/bar that takes up the largest part of the hotels ground floor open space. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7a797af51.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bf4eeeb7e.jpeg Lifts to the right, a matching set are also to the left https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...721f89d16.jpeg Left side of ground floor with stairs up to mezzanine level. The mezzanine was set up for an investment event so I didnt take any photos there but it looks a fairly plain space. I suspect it has hidden depths but I couldn’t see any clear public access https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...61c918319.jpeg Right side of ground floor https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...75c8cf8d2.jpeg Gentlemans facilities https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2aad69ab1.jpeg Champagne and more entrance located on the left hand side near the pool area exit. Not an appealing restaurant to me, caviar and oyster fans will love it. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f480e32b3.jpeg Indoor Aristocool bar https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e46f76865.jpeg Trio of restaurants including Ginger where I ate last night, located on the right hand side near the pool exit https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...45bfd4dba.jpeg I notice that a lot of the sunbeds have gone, clearly the hotel have decided today that Autumn has arrived https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...83bf6fc31.jpeg Indoor Pool and gym https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a9fab3ca6.jpeg Pool bar has also been stripped https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...71c178e1f.jpeg Aristocool outdoor bar, back to back with, and mirrors the interior bar https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...be06784fc.jpeg Thaico spa entrance https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1041a6b41.jpeg Atrium lighting https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...55ad44d3e.jpeg Atrium in night lighting mode https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3c422b8ca.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...79ec1fbc6.jpeg The entrance to the Gym is supposedly on the first floor… https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c7172dc92.jpeg The route to the gym https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7c0a9b755.jpeg More route to gym https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f9ef93b88.jpeg And then… https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ba2426aa8.jpeg Finally… The first floor corridors smell unpleasantly of gym/pool and are to be avoided. Having followed the breadcrumbs to the rather dowdy gym lift my card failed to work. I suspect that Radisson know, quite rightly that I have no place being in a Gym! |
It seems that breakfast time is destined to have fawlty towers overtones this week. Today it’s not the guests, its the lounge attendant who is seriously angry at someone. After a very brusque greeting I have been merrily sitting here for the past hour and a bit drinking coffee and catching up on mail, world events, etc and for the entire time she has been in the far reaches of the lounge giving someone hell on her mobile phone.
There have been absolutely no other visitors to the lounge so far this morning so I suspect she will continue venting her wrath until there are. In the meanwhile, A La Carte is Off The Menu :D Beautiful sunny morning but a day of conference calls for me unless anything changes this morning. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...58fcf70be.jpeg Time to see what the buffet has to offer :D https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...269aeea3b.jpeg Little ducks all in a row |

It has ended up being a full day of work today and so lunch was a room service burger very late, around 2:30 pm
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b1ce17560.jpeg The latter part of the afternoon has been spent in the business lounge which has been my personal office, it’s been deserted the entire time. Now 6 o’clock has rolled around and people are starting to emerge for the evening buffet. Once more its a bizarre starch-less mix of beef, mixed veg, and salmon. I may try a bite of the beef a little later but having only recently eaten I’m not particularly hungry. Maybe tonight is the right time to try out champagne and more restaurant as there’s not much on the menu there to tempt me, but enough to satisfy, will see how I feel in a little bit. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...41e55fe03.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...49f47822d.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d8f113e28.jpeg Maintenance team have been busy today and the pool area is now completely deconstructed and the pool has its winter coat on. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...557c42ed1.jpeg And now, you know what comes next… hunt the fizz. |
Popped into champagne and more but it really doesn’t spark my interest so I wandered over to Prime Steakhouse.

I have not had this in a very long time, almost back to the 80’s dish so be interesting to see if my memories match todays reality. A glass of Chateau Franc Le Maine 2015 St Emilion Grand Cru to accompany and let’s hope that it tastes as grand as it sounds! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...66d64ef3a.jpeg |
The Tournedos Rossini turned out to be pepper steak with foie, and I sorely missed the crouton, which I know sounds snobby but that soggy crispy bread is what I remember of the dish, so a little disappointed. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender and the potato and sauce good, just.. someone stole my bread! :D

The wine was very good, accompanied the steak perfectly. Although “not hungry”, one of the deserts has caught my eye |

JapesUK your trip reports are fast becoming addictive, I’ve had to add two new destinations to my bucket list. Your choices of food and drink seem to match mine, the Sushi restaurant looked epic, well worthy of Michelin star.

You saw how I ran out of superlatives for that restaurant, sushi will never be my first choice but that meal was fantastic. And also glad that I’ve presented the places well enough that you would like to visit, always happy to help spend other peoples money :D |
I too enjoy your reports - interesting places and creative writing! :)

Today started with another silly o’clock wake up at 4am so the first couple of hours were catching up on work and world affairs. Popped into the lounge a little before 7am for a coffee and pastry and then back to the room for a thorough dental cleaning as woe betide me should my dentist find a croissant crumb still lurking :D
it was still dark when I left the hotel and I had hoped that some of the interesting buildings along the way may have been lit from the outside but unfortunately not. The only place with any vanity lighting was the natural history museum and that was a seemingly pointless green glow in the bushes. The only notable part of the wander was that at one point, as dawn was breaking, I was completely in step with the street lamp sensors so all the lights were switching off as I approached as if I was in a scene from a cheap horror film. Luckily I arrived at the surgery without any monsters accosting me from the gloom and now we have a little hurdle. My understanding of todays plan was that it was ten minutes to remove, cast, and reseat the upper jaw prosthetic. Which is exactly what it is, except the 2-3 hour gap between removal and replacement had not been communicated, or more likely that I misunderstood it! I explained that I had an absolutely full calendar and needed to been fully toothed and back at the hotel before 9am UK time and suggested a reschedule however after a call to the lab my dentist has rushed the prosthetic over to them herself for immediate attention. I have now been released toothless into the wild and am currently enjoying a quiet little park close to the surgery I rate this dental practice highly, we have had some challenges along the way, unsurprisingly given the sheer amount of work that has been performed, not least me managing to break my first prosthetic on a particularly chewy desert whist at a conference in Prague! The practice and in particular my consulting dentist have come through for me admirably on each occasion. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ae7edf48c.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8132a7d84.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...68b25636a.jpeg And with that it is time to meander back to the surgery and await her return, and the return of my smile :D |
Smile was returned just on time and a brisk walk back to the hotel meant that I arrived with ten minutes to spare before the start of the first of eight completely back to back conference calls.
