Maybe it's the translation but doubt many people expect to sunbathe in Dublin!:) |
Bewley's Oriental Cafes
Next we wanted to have a snack. First, I favoured Gino's Gelato, which they claim is Ireland's most favourite gelateria. They claim: "Our small batch artisan gelato is made fresh everyday in every store with 100% Organic Irish milk." When I looked at the first shop, I was greeted by piles of ice cream. So we moved on, I could vividly imagine the taste.
We ended up at Bewley's Oriental Cafes, the most famous traditional cafe in Dublin. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9c099d8cf1.jpg It is also traditional inside and a popular tourist attraction. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...14cf42a734.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f5f8efdd87.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b26bb73174.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ca53dc7a38.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...776bb986f3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...489af2a4da.jpg The cakes were quite good, the prices relatively high. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...45bd58c023.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5c842806d1.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a8159d06b6.jpg Overall OK, you could certainly do worse. |
Powerscourt Townhouse Center
The former townhouse of Viscount Powerscourt became first the Stamp Office, then a shopping centre in the early 80s. It is quite nice to look at, parts of the old furnishings have been preserved. The shops appear quite individual.

Well done on going to Bewleys! It is indeed a Dublin institution but I think you have to be Irish to properly appreciate it :)

St Teresa's Church Discalced Carmelites
Practically directly opposite Powerscourt Townhouse is St Teresa's Church Discalced Carmelites.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bd6b76a5fc.jpg Today it is the oldest Catholic church in Dublin, dating from 1793, although it was remodelled in Romanesque style in 1877. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f26ee8dff0.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8b7e4381a5.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...428eea5d82.jpg |
Chapter One
One of the hottest restaurants in Dublin right now is Chapter One. I was only able to connect to the reservation system 15 minutes late, and all the tables were already gone. In the end, I managed to get a table through a friendly email, but only on the first evening and quite early at 6:30 p.m.
The restaurant is located in the basement of the Writers Museum, so you wouldn't necessarily expect a restaurant with 2 Michelin stars. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...693e748db8.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6850b28805.jpg The interior is elegant, I liked it. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...536bb020d7.jpg Mocktails https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...56d462fe4a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e484f2f15.jpg Amuse Bouche https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...57a3eecc12.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fbea59a212.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a3c7f401e7.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...987edb2f15.jpg We took the Tasting Menu, which was 180,00 €. Quenelle of Langoustine & Sea Trout, Shimeji, Peas, Girolles https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1e91013781.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e827655acf.jpg Normally, the dish comes with truffled chicken butter, which was of course omitted in our case. The dish was an excellent start, really very tasty. The dish was not on the menu. It was a kind of panna cotta with lots of truffle. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...63e2a7dd29.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6c74ea835a.jpg Also very good. Bread https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...33dd074963.jpg BBQ Donegal Lobster with Karl Gosse & Cocoa Pod Glaze, Carrot, Citrus https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...78f3e81f27.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8d2b4eebd5.jpg Without question a glamour dish and also very tasty. More bread.... https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a109ab735c.jpg Castletownbere Cod, San MArzano Tomato, Caviar, Tosazu Sabayon https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ea4736c5b1.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8d04ab2bee.jpg For me the best dish of the evening, especially the tomatoes were outstanding. I opted for an extra cheese course for €29. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0675efc8d7.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5c4e45a0f7.jpg Lemon, Juniper, Olive Oil, Salted Milk Sorbet https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c175d90b7c.jpg Tastefully special. I liked it, but got a second one. GF didn't like it that much. Rhone-Valley Apricot, Jasmine, Apricot & Sauternes Gelato https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a1a35b7e31.jpg A good dessert. I was very satisfied with the menu, I liked everything. A grand culinary start, so it could go on. |

Merrion Hotel
Let's get down to breakfast. First there is a buffet, the selection is rather modest.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...18997ea7df.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...58268f7d30.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fe10179540.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bd11074bd8.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...eb5c0ca076.jpg There is also a menu to order. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8bb7f90cf6.jpg The quality of the food was mixed. The things ordered were okay, the things on the buffet average rather less good. For example, there were only 3 types of bread and 2 types of cheese. The only thing that was really good were the sweet pastries. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ae72b5ec70.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2b8f5928dc.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...74b8157106.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...557bd8ceed.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...55e78c61c6.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...971dd13a04.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d160718c8d.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4be90d3215.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a095e49ab7.jpg In summary, nothing special, a bit low for the prices called. |
National Gallery of Ireland
We started our first full day in Dublin with a visit to the National Gallery. Unsurprisingly, the focus is on Irish art, but there are also a few other important works, for example by Rembrandt, Cranach, Hals, Titian, Goya, Caravaggio, van Gogh, Monet or Vermeer. Definitely worth a visit, and like most state museums, there is no entrance fee.

offerendum I always enjoy your reports, something slightly different to others. I’m interested to know if you use a travel agent for your bookings or do it yourself?

Trinity College
One of the most visited sights in Dublin is Trinity College.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2ec73d16cb.jpg The main magnets are the Book of Kells and the library. You should buy timed tickets for these, which can be done easily online. You are not allowed to take photos of the Book of Kells, it is presented separately in a room. Only one page is open at a time, the one during our visit was rather unspectacular. The library is very well known, but it was not only totally overcrowded, it was also being renovated. Therefore, only a few shelves have books. Besides a few books, the well-known Brian Boru's harp is also on display. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cf499321de.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4d47afb6cb.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f2ccfa0629.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...19dd57ca98.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f9c03f5def.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f654c4ed7.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0165419926.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...efebbbc6df.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a5532cc6a0.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b8a5b776dc.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7a68137c0e.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20c008ce02.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9940773b13.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0d21b9884a.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7813c51b55.jpg |
