Travel Review 2020

Travel Review 2020:

Well travel in 2020 is surely interesting for every one of us and I basically stopped traveling after returning to Hong Kong in March. The only flight I flew after that was a Hong Kong Express’ FLYCATION flight on November 1. I flew on one new airline this year, which is Taos Air, and onboard this semi-private jet flight from Hawthorn Municipal Airport to Dallas Love via Taos Airport, which is one of the two new airports this year, is interesting, and my other highlight is being able to catch a flight on Qantas’ Boeing 747-400ER before its sudden retirement in mid-year. I flew only two inaugural flights on January 7 – Alaska Airlines from LAX to Redmond/Bend Roberts Field Municipal Airport, and its inaugural from Redmond/Bend to San Diego. I don’t think I need to do any comparison with 2019 because I flew much less, which possibly applied to 99.9% of the world.

I flew only 38 flight this year, which equal to 78,539 miles/126,396 km. I spent only 167 hours and 46 minutes in airline, which equals to roughly a week. My longest flight of the year in terms of distance is on Qantas’ 787-9 nonstop from Sydney to San Francisco, and in terms of duration, it was my return from Los Angeles to Hong Kong in January, which flying time was fifteen hours and twenty-six minutes. My shortest flight is a 109 miles & 24 minutes hope from San Diego to Los Angeles International airport on January.

My top airports are Seattle/Tacoma International, London Heathrow, and Los Angeles International. My top airlines in terms of amount are JetBlue (11 flights) and British Airways (7 flights), and in terms of distance are British Airways (15,466 miles), Qantas (15,201 miles), and JetBlue (13,272 miles). My top aircraft based on amount of flights is Airbus A320-200 (7 flights) and based on distance is the Boeing 787-9 (15,979 miles).

In terms of elite status, there is no change because every airline extends status to 2022. I maintained my American Airlines’ Platinum status, Alaska Airlines MVP Gold75K, British Airways’ Executive Club Gold, JetBlue’s Mosaic status, Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer Gold, and Turkish Airlines’ Elite Plus. I added one elite status – Starlux Airlines’ Insighter Status through a status matching promotion.

I honestly did not have high hopes for 2021 especially the first half of the year. Without vaccine available to most of the world and people willing to take it, it is hard to imagine travel will return the same way as in the pre-Covid-19 world. Nonetheless things will hopefully ease up towards the end of the year and there will be plenty of deals for me to take advantage of.

Happy New Year and Stay Safe and Strong!

Adrian

2020 in Review for Flights

19 total itineraries
25 scheduled flight segments plus one unscheduled segment
Longest flight segment by duration was 3:25 from DAL to ONT
Longest flight segment by length was from PHX to PIT
Shortest flight segment both by length and duration was unscheduled segment ONT to LAX at 0:24
I flew a total of 15,726 miles according to flightmemory.com
I used 22 airports but no new airports
I flew only one airline that being Southwest
I requalified for A-List thanks to reduced requirements on account of C19
I was able to get a window seat each flight segment
The unscheduled segment came about when I was on a flight from DAL to LAX and there was a holding pattern over Arizona and then the pilot announced the flight was being diverted to ONT to take on fuel due to an expected long hold time. The flight diverted to ONT, took on fuel then continued to LAX with a rather odd routing.

This year? I flew from MEL - ADL twice to visit family.

C'est tout!

Not quite so exciting, so I appreciate seeing some wonderful photographs on this thread. Wouldn't it be grand if we published a FT Photography magazine!

My 2020 travel highlights:
  • Rang in the new year in Seoul, ate some delicious food, and visited Lotte World, Seoul's version of Disneyland
  • Hopped aboard a 747-8 for the first time and took a trip to Hong Kong
  • Bungy jumped off Macau Tower, the tallest permanent bungee in the world
  • Drove all over northern Italy with my girlfriend and scuba dived in Y-40, what was the deepest pool in the world, outside Venice
  • Reached 1K status for the first time ever!
New Countries (2): South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau
New Airports (4): ICN, HKG, IDA, CTA
New Airlines (0): Unless Alitalia Cityliner counts in addition to Alitalia
New Planes (5): 747-8, A321neo, 787-10, CRJ-550, ERJ-190

Shortest Flight: RIC-IAD, 161 miles
Longest Flight: HKG-ZRH, 5773 miles

Total Airports (19): ICN, IST, MUC, NAP, FRA, HKG, ZRH, EWR, DEN, IDA, CTA, LHR, BRU, SFO, RIC, IAD, FLL, ORF, FCO
Total Flights (36): -50 compared to 2019
Total Miles: 52,434 miles

I think we've all certainly had better years, but I certainly made the best of it. I'm glad I got in a lot of flights pre-COVID and was able to take a few big trips in January and I was happy to switch to a paid flight for my trip back to the states in November so I could reach 1K.

The saddest year in my travelling history as well, and consisted of only one business trip to the US

New Countries (0): None
New Airports (2): SAN, ORD
New Airlines (0): None
New Planes (0): None

Shortest Flight: SAN-ORD, 1,723 miles
Longest Flight: ORD-NRT, 6,274 miles

Total Airports (4): BKK, NRT, SAN, ORD
Total Flights (5): BKK-NRT, NRT-SAN, SAN-ORD, ORD-NRT, NRT-BKK. Too few to bear and doing the comparison to previous years would just make me sad
Total Miles: 19,333 miles
Cabins: All business class

Looking out on the tarmac from the NRT JAL F lounge

One of the best steaks I have had in the sky - beautifully medium cooked Wagyu beef (might not look like much, but it was truly delicious)

And finally a crisp, wintery Chicago morning before embarking on the 24hr marathon journey home

It's on my list for this year! Just need to wait for the COVID numbers to go down before I can go.

An even deeper one is being built in the UK, so that's as good of an excuse as any to go there too!
