Day 1.

With the birth of our new daughter Hannelie, we hadn't travelled at all since her arrival. With Rianda's Mum visiting and a public holiday coming up, I decided it was a good time for a staycation in Dubai.

We hadn't stayed on the Palm Jumeirah so it seemed like a great opportunity to do so.

Our hotel check in wasn't until a few hours so we stopped to enjoy a walk at The Pointe, a relatively new restaurant and shopping complex along a promenade at the top of the trunk of the main Palm island.

Looking across to the Atlantis The Palm with the Palm Monorail crossing over to the right.

With it being National Day there was a large array of fireworks set up ready for tonight (right). We then settled down for some lunch at a table outdoors at Kasap Restaurant (left) for a dose of Turkish cuisine.

Turkish tea and a mint-lemonade to start.

A platter of mixed mezze to share.

And some tasty chicken, steak, kofta and lamb fresh from the grill.

We then made the short drive through the Palm Jumeirah tunnel to the main cresecent and on to the Sofitel Palm Resort & Spa. The resort was located on the the eastern side of the Palm crescent with The World Islands visible in the distance on the horizon.

Pulling up to the valet at the main entrance. The luxury 5 star Polynesian-themed beach resort has been open since 2013.

And inside the lobby for check-in. With the public holiday and being peak season for Dubai our one night rate was not an insignificant $510 including breakfast. I booked via Hotels.com though giving me an effective 10% discount.

Our room was only a short walk away but with Rianda's Mum and baby Hannelie with us we opted to get a ride in a hotel golfcart.

And our spacious one bedroom apartment for our one night staycation.

The kitchen included all amenities including a toaster, an oven and even a washing machine.

Red Bull, candy and water in the fridge. I had initally looked at booking a one bedroom suite, but the one bed apartment was actually slightly cheaper, larger and had a full kitchen which came in handy with the baby.

The living room with sofa bed for Rianda's Mum.

The main bedroom with king-size bed.

And the super-sized bath!

Complete with Elemis toiletries.

The wardrobe on the left and the first toilet with bidet on the right.

The second toilet next door.

And Hannelie testing out the comfy bed.

A view of the Arabian Gulf from our balcony.

I then went out to check out the rest of the resort.

The rows of villas along Frond F on the central Palm island.

Looking south to the Burj Al Arab, Waldorf Astoria and Anantara hotels.

A large palatial compound surrounded by date palms at the end of Frond E.

A completed but seemingly empty resort.

The Sarai Luxury Apartment complex.

And back at the Sofitel where we headed down to the hotel beach for a swim.

The sun beginning to set over Atlantis The Palm.

Hannelie looking very relaxed as she takes her first ever dip in the sea.

And enjoying a dip in the refreshing 26°C water. Much nicer than the 'hot bath' in summer!

Back in our hotel room where there was a surprise box of chocolates on the kitchen counter.

And enjoying the seaview and a drink from our balcony in the fading twilight.

For dinner we headed to the hotel's Moana restaurant for some a la carte seafood.

Some drinks to start while we perused the menu.

For the appetiser I opted for the hand-cut beetroot cured salmon with caper berries, pickled silver onions, quail egg and whipped mascarpone.

Rianda had the gulf prawns stew with fresh clams, red beans, chipotle sauce and garlic bread.

While Rianda's Mum had the handpicked garden salad with baby artichokes, cucumbers, grilled vegetables and citrus dressing..

Right on 8 pm the fireworks went off at The Pointe to celebrate UAE National Day.

Shortly afterwards our mains arrived. My pan-seared red mullet with garlic yucca purée, grilled baby zucchini, roasted cauliflower and lobster broth.

Rianda's tasty baked norwegian salmon fillet with shrimps leeks sofrito, grilled green asparagus and saffron fennel.

And Riandas Mum's grilled beef tenderloin with mushroom and truffle paste, thyme hassleback potato and roasted onion jus.

A cold towel to refresh before the third and final course.

For dessert I chose the divine trocadero with pistachio genoise, strawberry pulp, vanilla chantilly and fresh strawberries.

Rianda decided to indulge with the jasmin green tea délice consisting of green tea sponge with jasmine green tea and vanilla mousse.

And Rianda's Mum enjoyed the lemon sorbet with mint leaf and strawberry and blackberry segments.

An absolutely delicious dinner with perfectly sized portions and an amazingly indulgent experience!

Day 2.

I got up early at dawn and walked across to the Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk. The skyline of Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa in the distance.

The hotel in the foreground and the Burj Al Arab to the upper-left.

Looking up at the under-construction Royal Atlantis Residences.

Due to open in the third quarter of 2020 at the cost of the $1.4 billion, it will have 231 apartments, 693 hotel rooms and 102 suites.

The controversial and polarizing building design by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates has been likened to a giant Jenga set! The apartments will range from two to five bedrooms with prices starting from $2m.

The skyline of Dubai Marina in the distance.

The 43-storey Royal Atlantis will feature 90 swimming pools including a rooftop infinity pool that the construction workers were building on level 22 below.

The nearby Atlantis The Palm with the monorail extending to the main frond island to the left.

The 1,548 room nautically themed resort to the right and Royal Atlantis Residences to the far left. It was interesting to see the two sister resorts side-by-side with totally dissimilar architecture.

The world's tallest building on the horizon again as the light of day gradually arrives.

And back at the resort where the sun was now rising in the sky.

I then put on the running shorts and headed back to the boardwalk to work off some of last nights indulgence.

With a leisurely run down to the Rixos Hotel.

Passing by the Waldorf Astoria with seven white Lexus taxis outside.

And back at the hotel where Hannelie and Rianda were enjoying a sleep in.

At 9am we headed to Manava Restaurant for some breakfast.

Making the most of the sumptious buffet.

And I couldn't resist going back for some waffles and pancake!

After packing our bags we headed to the main hotel pool for a dip.

Hannelie rocking her pink sunglasses and white sun hat.

At midday it was sadly time to checkout. The three ladies posing with the decorated christmas tree that had just been put up in the lobby.

And back in the Kia for the ride home after a brief but amazing staycation!

Congrats on your new daughter, Hannelie! She’s a cutie. Can’t wait for all the new adventures she will bring you and Rianda. Have you gotten her passport(s) yet?

Many thanks, Jaimito Cartero. Yes, she has many adventures ahead to look forward to. Passport arrived a few weeks after she was born, a necessity here living in Dubai. She already has her first passport stamp / new country too though.

Thanks for posting a new report. It takes the edge off while I am sulking about having to cancel my 4 day Inca Trail + another 10 days in Peru. And I've had a chance to review a few of your fantastic past reports.

Congratulations to Rianda and you on Hannelie. (And a very nice name.)

Safe travels!

Amazing views of the main and Marina skylines! Hard to believe a condo there can be had for just $2m! What a bargain!

Thank you, nequine. Yes, a great place for a family getaway, if only we could have stayed a little longer.

Cheers, lamphs. My commiserations for your cancelled Peru trip. We just had to cancel Hannelie's first overseas trip and have booked a staycation in Abu Dhabi instead.

Thanks, hkskyline. Would be a nice place to live. Not sure how traffic to the mainland during rush hour would be though.
