Excellent TR
Better to stay away from rum before driving some of these roads. ;)
Videos are impressive too.

Have you tasted some of these homemade cocktails? (Apparently the Punch Bois Bandé one improves sexual performance :D )

I tried the coconut rum and it was amazing. It's usually served cold and is thick when chilled. Kind of reminds me of Bailey's but with coconut and rum instead.

I lived on both islands during part of my residency. They are really different as you mentioned.
La Martinique is mostly welcoming to tourists, including Frenchmen.
La Guadeloupe on the other hand has a very ambivalent relationship with the Métropole (= the French State) and consequently with French tourists (The Independance movement is more developed there) ; hostility is more prevalent and can be off-putting. You clearly have to walk on egg shells when interacting with some people and they won't be shy expressing their displeasure at seeing 'foreigners' on their territory.

I heard the same thing from my French friends. They said people in Guadeloupe are rude and it's often because they assume whites from le métropole are racist. I thought the people in Martinique were very welcoming. It surprised me because as an American, I am sometimes used to black people here treating whites differently. In Martinique I felt like I got the same treatment as everyone else.

Moi j'aime beaucoup la Martinique et la Guadeloupe et le merveilleux rhum. Thanks for the nice report and discussion. I'm enjoying it while sipping some Dillon.

I really enjoyed this trip report and photos, even considering I don’t drink rum 🙂. Thanks to those who bumped it up, because I would’ve missed it otherwise.

Echo above - I missed this the first time around, so great to catch up with this lovely report.

I mentioned the scary roads earlier. See for yourself here. I was about halfway back to the AirBnB when it got dark. And when I say dark, I mean dark! No lights of any kind except for on your car.

I had a similar experience in Tobago, driving on the left for the first time. I had planned to get back before sunset, but was held up by traffic and wound up driving after dark. Was properly scary at the time with no lights and no experience of the roads.
