Castle Combe: Manor House

But now to our cottage, which was part of this row of houses:

The cottage itself is surely great if you love the style. Personally I prefer a more modern room. In the basement was the living room with a real fireplace.

The "aircondition" in the Basement. Iīm sure bhrubin would not like this

In the basement was also located the bathroom what is not really conveniant at night as the bedroom was located upstairs. The bathroom itself was good sized and pretty nice.

Perhaps it could have been a little bit cleaner

From the bathroom you could reach the small private garden.

There was also a small kitchen. Not really modern.....

To reach the bedroom you had to use this stairs. I guessitīs not for everyone.

The bedroom had without question character

I loved this little guy:

"Traditional"

The Dyson hairdryer was not as strong as you could think.

Upstairs was a "real" aircondition but we didnīt try it. Iīm also sure bhrubin would also not like it.

At night many people came back through the road in front of the cottage so it was loud.

Would not have liked a stay here at all.
Curving steps to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night?
Spiders in the room?
Noise from people in the street?
I hope this was a short stay!

We stayed three nights at Barnsley House in the Cotswolds. I think we stayed too long. I think one day of stone and thatched roofs is enough!

I am enjoying your trip report though!

Castle Combe: Manor House The Bybrook

As the restaurant "The Bybrook" holds a Michelin star we had of course dinner here. We booked a package which included 2 tasting menus. The surcharge was 75 GBP per person, the normal price would have been 95 GBP per person. So if you book a room and plan to eat at the restaurant you can save 40 GBP this way.
The menu itself was really good and absolutely worth a Michelin star. I can recommend the restaurant without restrictions.

Castle Combe: Manor House

Very important at a hotel is always the breakfast. After the good dinner the day before I had high expectations.
When I saw the buffet I knew my expectations were to high. The selection was modest and even worse soe of the items (like cheese or bread) were nearly always out of stock. Unworthy for a luxury hotel.

To be fair the selection for made to order dishes were OK, but nothing special.

Castle Combe: St Andrew

St Andrew is the parish church and dates back to the 13th century and was mostly re-build in 1850/51. The cemetry has pretty old parts

but also a modern one.

The church has the typical style.

The interior:

Castle Combe: Village

The village of Castle Combe is one of the most visited in the Cotswolds and a frequent filming location. While it is indeed pretty nice I see no reason for a hype.

Great golf course at Manor House- but I suspect that's not your thing !! Being pedantic, I think it's stretching things to say that Castle Combe is in the Cotswolds...

You are right, golf is not my cup of tea. It may be stretching things but Castle Combe is at many sites named as a typical Cotswolds village and itīs located inside the AONB.

Bath: St. Lawrence Street

For our last day we decided to do Bath. I stayed here back in 2012 and had good memories, We parked at South Gate to visit the Roman Bathes. But we first went through St. Lawrence Street which was beautifully decorated.

Bath: Roman Baths

Now it was time for the number 1 attraction in Bath. In front of the Baths were a relative long line for tickets but the waiting time was OK.

The hall with the ticket-counters has a richly decorated ceiling.

The tour starts at the roof above the Great Bath.

Inside is a small museum, you can also see excavations of the ancient baths.

The hot spring

The great baths

Stairs

Caldarium

They try to re-animate the old times

Circular Bath

The sacred pool

You can taste the thermal water. To be honest is no real pleasure…..

Bath: Abbey

Just at the Baths is also located Bath Abbey, a typical English cathedral with a beautiful ceiling. At the moment they do renovations so it was not that impressive.

Bath: Circus

Next we went to the Circus. No, we didnīt see flying acrobats or dancing elephants. Perhaps some clowns, but they performed without Intention The Circle is an ensemble of townhouses from the middle of the 18th century.

The building is much more impressive in reality and on pictures from above.

Bath: Royal Crescent

The Royal Crescent is a row of terraced houses from the second half of the 18th century. The meadow in front is popular for a picnic. There is also a small museum but we had some time-problems (read later…)
