Mawlamyine: Temples, Churches and Mosque

Mawlamyine skyline

Downtown Mawlamyine

Mawlamyine Pagoda Hill

Mosque

Colonial-era houses

Modern electrical system inside a church

They are beginning to put fake marble on the floor

An other pagoda

One more church

A monastery

This church is in an even worst state

Surti Mosque

Mon King Palace

Mawlamyine Colonial Era Prison

Mawlamyine was the first capital of Myanmar during the british occupation. In the 1870's, it was a cosmopolitan city with a large population of Armenians, Americans, British and Indians. Today it is only the shadow of its ancient glory, with dilapidated mosques, churches and colonial houses at every corners. But it is maybe in its decadency that it shows the best her beauty, with the nostaly of the past behind.

Come back to Yangon by train

Our train leaves Mawlamyine at 7:30 pm and arrives the next day in Yangon at 5:30 am. Sadly, no beds available on this train.

First step: buying blankets, pillows and waters.

Nice Indian style Masala Chai that I bought to a vendor. Good to mentally survive the uncomfortable 10 hours trip.

From Yangon to Tachileik, Myitkyina and Mandalay with Air KBZ and Mann Yadanarpon

Still tired from the overnight train without beds.
At around 11 am, we arrived at the modern Yangon domestic airport.

Check-in Counters of Yangon Domestic Airport

Until recently, Air KBZ was providing only handwritten air tickets. Only since one month ago do they give printed boarding passes.

Tachileik Airport, our plane was the only one in the airport.

Tachileik

We went to have dinner in a Chinese Restaurant, that was absolutely disgusting.

Then we went to the casino. As casino are forbidden on the Thai side, Thai people go to Myanmar to play. All the casino staff was Thai, and our burmese kyats were refused even though we are in Myanmar....

The next day we went to visit Tachilek main street and the temples. We do not feel at all in Myanmar as most of the temples are "Thai-style".

Then we went a nice coffee shop that would not have looked out of place in the middle of San-Francisco and New-York.

5 minutes away by walk we took pictures of the Thai-Myanmar border.

Flight from Tachileik to Myitkyina via Mandalay

In Myanmar, planes spend their time to do milk-run. A flight from Yangon go first to Mandalay, then Tachileik, then come back to Mandalay, then go to Myitkyina. We took it on the Tachileik-Mandalay-Myitkyina part. Flight was pretty much the same as on the post before, despite being with a different airline, Mann Yadanarpon. Here are some pictures of Tachileik departure terminal.

Myitkyina

Myitkyina is the biggest city of Kachin State.
The road to go there is forbidden for foreigners, so you basically have two options:
- 24 hours on an non-AC train from Mandalay
- 1 hour flight, which we did.
The city has a mix of wooden houses, mosques, buddhist pagodas, hindu and sikh temples.

Thank you for your very interesting trip report.
I have travelled to several places in Asia and in the hotels from one particular chain I have met young French people working in the hotel. I wonder if you are working for the same company!

Mandalay

We arrived in Mandalay's modern airport around 6 pm. By the time we were at the hotel, it was around 7 pm, so our only visit time was the morning the next day.
