December Doings

Tour of Duty 5th December 2018 to 19th December 2018
Part I: The Flights and First Night Out
5th December

I learned of and accepted a trip from Texarkana, Texas to Ehrenberg, Arizona. A flight to Little Rock was booked and a Greyhound bus ticket was booked from North Little Rock, AR to Texarkana, AR. A room was booked for the night of Wednesday the 5th of December in North Little Rock.

Wednesday the 5th of December came and I saw it rained it least some the previous night as the streets and sidewalks were wet. I got transport to LGB and it was overcast but not raining. I checked in and checked bags which weighed 40.0 and 46.0lbs. I cleared security and opted out and was patted down. Both of my carry ons were given additional manual screening. Total time from beginning of check in to clear of security was 23 minutes.

Southwest #3420 LGB-LAS B-737-700 Boarding Pass A53
Seat 21A Cruising altitude 29,000 feet Estimated flying time 0:42, actual 0:41
Depart: Gate 2 Scheduled 12h00, actual 12h01 Taxi: 11 minutes
Arrive: Gate C4 Scheduled 13h10, actual 12h58 Taxi: 5 minutes

I boarded via rear stairs. It was announced the flight would be bumpy and service would be suspended. The plane was mostly but not totally full with a load of 98/143. My row had an empty middle seat. Pushback was one minute late and takeoff was the opposite direction than usual, to the southeast. We circled to the right to head northeast. I saw LGB, Interstate 405, Interstate 605 and the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base before we went into the clouds at 1min25sec. I saw sunlight at 3min35sec. At 0:12 I saw limited breaks in the cloud cover over the Mojave Desert and I saw Interstate 15 and Victorville. I felt bumps during climb and cruise was announced at 0:17 and we would arrive at LAS landing to the west on time or early. I thought I felt descent at 0:21 while in the clouds. At 0:33 I saw the Las Vegas metro area and the 215 ring road. We overflew LAS at 0:34 and headed east then turned north and west and landed to the west and arrived at gate 12 minutes early. We deplaned via jetway. I did not get anything to eat during the layover at LAS.

Southwest #1057 LAS-LIT B-737-700 Boarding Pass A50
Seat 23F Cruising altitude 41,000 feet Estimated flying time 2:30, actual 2:20
Depart: Gate C24 Scheduled 14h10, actual 14h06 Taxi: 13 minutes
Arrive: Gate 10 Scheduled 19h05, actual 18h43 Taxi: 4 minutes
Reclaim checked bags <16 minutes after arrival

We boarded via jetway. The plane was not full with a load of 66/143. I had an entire row to myself. Pushback was 4 minutes early and takeoff was to the west and we turned south then east southeast. We went into clouds at 0:03. I felt some real good bumps during climb. The clouds broke at 0:24. I saw snowcapped mountains and snow on the ground. I got Ritz "Plane Crackers" at 0:27 as skies cleared over northern Arizona. At 0:41 I saw Interstate 40 and Gallup, New Mexico. Then I saw red cliffs east of Gallup. Seatbelt sign went off at 0:43. I got cup of soda at 0:45 over northwest New Mexico. At 0:52 I saw the Rio Grande and the Albuquerque area to the distance and at 0:53 I saw the Sandia Mountains. At 1:01 we crossed Interstate 25 over northeast New Mexico. I dozed off for part of the flight. I thought I felt descent at 1:56 over eastern Oklahoma. Seatbelt sign went on at 1:58 as descent was announced. I saw the lights of the Little Rock area at 2:14. We landed to the southeast and arrived at gate 22 minutes early. We deplaned via jetway. I found out LIT was renamed Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport and I took some pictures of exhibits before leaving the secure area. It is possible my checked bags beat me to baggage reclaim. I got my bags and for the first time this season I broke out my winter jacket as it was 39F at LIT. I got transport to hotel after finding out there was no airport shuttle though the location was listed as having an airport shuttle. I checked in and walked to McDonald's for evening rations before spending the night in North Little Rock, AR.

Going Greyhound then Going through the Great Southwest; First Snow

Tour of Duty 5th December 2018 to 19th December 2018
Part II: 6th December to 11th December

I awoke Thursday to a cloudy and chilly day. The temperature stayed in the 40'sF all day. I got transport to the Greyhound Bus Depot in North Little Rock and checked in and checked my bags. My bus ticket said Little Rock and the Greyhound website shows Little Rock, AR but the bus station is actually in North Little Rock, AR which is actually another city.

Greyhound #1227 Little Rock, AR to Texarkana, AR
Depart: Gate 5 Scheduled 10h40, actual 10h41
Arrive: Gate 2 Scheduled 12h55, actual 12h48
Reclaim checked bags immediately upon disembarking

The bus was on a route from Chicago, IL to Dallas, TX with numerous intermediate stops in between. The bus departed North Little Rock one minute late. I saw the Arkansas River and parts of downtown Little Rock very soon after departure. There were no intermediate stops on my itinerary. There was some off an on rain en route but it was not raining when we arrived Texarkana, AR 7 minutes early. After I disembarked I phoned up the shipper and soon was picked up and taken to the truck. Drizzle started falling as soon as we entered Texas and there was mist, drizzle and light rain. I loaded my gear into the truck, did the inspection and finally got started.

Trip: Texarkana, TX to Ehrenberg, AZ 1,392 paid miles
Make: 2019 Freightliner
Model: Cab and Chassis
Transmission: Automatic
Route: Interstate 369 to Interstate 30 to Interstate 20 to Interstate 10 with detour in El Paso
Maximum elevation: 4,974 feet at Texas Canyon Interstate 10 14 miles east of Benson, AZ and 20 miles west of Willcox, AZ
Highest diesel price USA: 3.399$ per gallon at Pilot Big Spring, TX
Lowest diesel price USA: 2.649$ per gallon at Love's Hooks, TX
Permits required: AZ and NM Trip Permits

As mentioned earlier it was an overcast day with mist, drizzle and light rain nearly all of the time. The roads were wet resulting in spray from other vehicles. Temperatures stayed in the 40'sF until it got to 50F just before midnight in Ft. Worth, TX. I stopped in Hooks, TX to take on fuel. I then stopped in nearby New Boston, TX and had late midday rations at Randy's BBQ. I later had evening rations from QT in Greenville, TX. Then I ran the 30 through downtown Dallas and downtown Ft. Worth before reaching the west edge of Ft. Worth where I got a room for the night. I spent the night in Ft. Worth, TX.

Friday it was dry when I got started in Ft. Worth but almost immediately after I got started the rain started up again. The rain continued all day. I had midday rations at a truckstop in Gordon, TX. I took it slow and easy because there is essentially no traction with the cab and chassis. I had evening rations at Schlotzsky's Deli in Sweetwater, TX. The temperature dropped from the 40'sF to the 30'sF as I headed west on Interstate 20. I learned that there was the threat of freezing rain and mixed precipitation and the weather forecast indicated the rain/snow line would be very close to my intended route so I opted to shut down early to avoid any possible problems. I spent the night in Colorado City, TX.

Saturday morning the snowflakes were flying in Colorado City, TX. The snow was not sticking in Colorado City and the temperature was barely above freezing. I took some pictures of downtown Colorado City then headed west on the 20. I stopped in Big Spring, TX to take on fuel and by that time the precipitation stopped. As I headed west road conditions improved. I stopped in Midland for midday rations at KD BBQ. I stopped in Monahans, TX to take some pictures of that town and the sky started to clear. I had evening rations in Van Horn, TX before heading to El Paso where I took on fuel on the east side of El Paso. I phoned up numerous hotels and found out that many hotels were sold out but finally was able to hold a room on the west side of El Paso. I took the Sunland Park exit and arrived at hotel just 7 minutes before the end of my legal 14 hour workday. I spent the rest of the night and the next morning in El Paso, TX.

Sunday I awoke late in El Paso, TX. I was not able to get back on the 10 at Sunland Park as a couple hours after I arrived at hotel that interchange with the 10 was closed for construction. I took Sunland Park to Doniphan then took Doniphan to Transmountain where I got back on the 10 west. I stopped at the New Mexico Port of Entry to get Trip Permit then continued to Deming where I took some pictures of that city and had early evening rations at Rancher's Grill. I took on fuel in Lordsburg. I phoned up a number I thought was for a church in Lordsburg but that number was not what I thought it was. I continued west into Arizona and stopped at the Port of Entry to purchase a Trip Permit. I made a pit stop in Willcox then continued to Tucson where I sought lodging. It was late enough I was going to need a noon checkout to take a legal break but several hotels I phoned up would not bend on their 11h00 checkout. I finally found a place with a noon checkout that allowed truck parking so off I went and I spent the rest of the night and the next morning in Tucson, AZ.

Monday I understood that the earlier weather delays cost my my ability to make delivery in Ehernberg that day so I took my time and I found a place to park for a short while and took some pictures of downtown Tucson. Then I headed west and after a pit stop at the rest area in Sacaton I continued west on the 10 into the Phoenix metro area and I stopped in the East Valley where I found a place to park and I had early evening rations which consisted of a tri tip sandwich at Can't Stop Smokin' BBQ in Chandler, AZ. I waited awhile and took a nap as I learned traffic was bad. Then I headed across the Valley of the Sun and still got some traffic slowdowns but not as bad as if I left earlier. I stopped on the west side of the Phoenix area and had late evening rations consisting of a sliced bbq brisket sandwich at Rudy's Bar-B-Q in Goodyear, AZ. I then headed west on the 10 and spent the night in Quartzsite, AZ.

Tuesday I headed the 12 miles into Ehrenberg and delivered the truck. I booked an itinerary on Greyhound out of Blythe. I opted to wait awhile before the taxicab came to get me as the driver's lounge at the receiver was more commodious than the location where Greyhound came to pick up and discharge passengers in Blythe, CA. I got paperwork done and kicked back then the taxi came and took me to the location that Greyhound serves in Blythe, CA. I learned that the bus was delayed so I had a much longer wait than anticipated.

Greyhound #1437 Blythe, CA to El Monte, CA
Depart: Scheduled 14h20, actual 16h26
Arrive: Scheduled 18h30, actual 20h17
Reclaim checked bags immediately upon disembarking

The bus departed Blythe 2h6min late and we left Blythe as the sun set. We continued west across the desert darkness and we made an intermediate stop in San Bernardino and I got off to stretch and use the facilities. We continued west and made another intermediate stop in Claremont but this stop did not allow enough time to get off. We arrived at El Monte 1h47min late and I got off and claimed my bags and got an Uber to go home for the night.

Up and Down the Golden State

Tour of Duty 5th December 2018 to 19th December 2018
Part III: 12th December to 17th December

I got word about two more trips so I took them. I made it clear what timeline I would be able to observe. I got transport to the shipper and loaded the truck and did inspection and got underway.

Trip: Compton, CA to Yuba City, CA 444 paid miles
Make: 2018 Freightliner
Model: Vacuum Truck
Transmission: Automatic
Route: Interstate 710 to Interstate 10 to Interstate 5 to California 2 to Interstate 210 to Interstate 5 to California 99
Maximum elevation: 4,144 feet at Tejon Pass Interstate 5 one mile south of the Los Angeles/Kern County line
Highest diesel price USA: 4.039$ per gallon at Pilot Castaic, CA
Lowest diesel price USA: 3.779$ per gallon at Flying J Patterson, CA

I got started and had slow traffic as usual in the greater Los Angeles area. I avoided some traffic problems by taking the 2 to the 210 to avoid a problem area of the 5. I stopped to top up the fuel tank and DEF in Castaic, CA then headed up the Grapevine to Gorman, CA where I stopped to have evening rations which consisted of a steak sandwich and fries at Ranch House Restaurant. I did not realise it until I left but I saw a Health Department sign giving that establishment a "B" grade instead so I was concerned about getting sick but I did not get sick. I continued north on the 5 and stayed on the 5 at the 99 split. I would take California 99 later on in the trip. I spent the night in Lost Hills, CA

Thursday I continued north and got off at California 198 in the Coalinga area and stopped at Harris Ranch and got a tri tip sandwich at Harris Ranch Express, a quicker and less expensive alternative to the restaurant. I took on fuel in Patterson, Sacramento the south side of Yuba City. In the Sacramento area I got on California 99 north heading toward Yuba City. I had a challenge parking the truck at hotel but spent the night in Yuba City,CA.

Friday I completed delivery in Yuba City and got transport to Richmond for the next truck. During my trip from Yuba City to Richmond there was rain in the Fairfield area but it was not raining in Richmond when I picked up the truck.

Trip: Richmond, CA to Compton, CA 399 paid miles
Make: 2016 Peterbilt
Model: Vacuum Truck
Transmission: standard straight 10-speed
Route: Richmond Parkway to Interstate 80 to California 4 to J4 Byron Road to Interstate 205 to Interstate 5 to California 120 to California 99 to Interstate 5 to Interstate 605 to California 91 to Interstate 710
Maximum elevation: 4,144 feet Tejon Pass Interstate 5 one mile south of the Los Angeles/Kern County line
Highest diesel price USA: 3.999$ per gallon at Pilot Castaic, CA
Lowest diesel price USA: 3.599$ per gallon at Speedy Fuel Long Beach, CA

I was going to take the shortest route mileagewise to get out of the Bay Area but I checked my smartphone and saw there was a crash in the Oakland area causing a 20 minute delay. I knew that that 20 minute delay could grow to be a lot more especially as it was Friday afternoon. So I opted for an alternate route out of the Bay Area. Since it was Friday afternoon there was no way I would be able to make it to Compton before the receiver closed for the weekend so I knew I would be stuck with the truck for the entire weekend. As a result I had originally planned to spend Saturday night in Visalia and then attend a church that a friend of mine goes to there in Visalia. However I learned that my friend was going to be in southern California that weekend visiting relatives so I had to make other plans.

I got underway and soon I encountered off and on rain. The rain quit by the time I got to Martinez. Traffic was very slow on eastbound Interstate 205 in Tracy. As I was on the interchange making the transition to Interstate 5 I saw a roadside stand with a sign that said BBQ and I thought I saw the tops of semi trucks so I figured there was truck access so exited Mossdale Road and navigated my way to the roadside stand. I had evening rations at Kenny's Cafe the restaurant inside Denise's Farmers Market in Lathrop, CA. Afterward I got back on the 5 then headed east on the 120 to the southbound 99 and I took on fuel in Ripon. I continued south and ended up spending the night in Merced, CA.

Saturday I made my way south and stopped for early evening rations at Bravo Farms in Traver, CA. I continued south on the 99 and stopped at Hodel's and took a quick look at the buffet and decided it was not worthwhile so I stopped at Milt's and had a grilled cheese sandwich and found out their bleu cheese dressing is excellent dip for the french fries. I spent the night in Bakersfield, CA.

Sunday morning I attended service at Reformation Bible Church on the east side of Bakersfield, CA. The sermon was on Genesis 18:16-33. After church I parked the truck and took some pictures of downtown Bakersfield and I had a burger and fries at the lunch counter of Woolworth's in downtown Bakersfield. Afterward I continued south and went up and down the Grapevine. I took on fuel in Castaic and I ended up spending the night in Montebello, CA.

Monday I delivered the truck in Compton then got transport home.

2018 Finale: From the San Joaquin Valley to the Pacific Coast

Tour of Duty 5th December 2018 to 19th December 2018
Part IV: 18th December to 19th December

I thought I was possibly done for the year but alas I learned of another short trip that would keep me busy until closer to the holiday. There was some confusion as to where the truck was going. Dispatch first thought Oxford, CA near Sacramento then said Oxnard, CA in Ventura County. The trip paperwork at first said Oxnard, CA. Later I found the truck was going to Point Magu, CA. I accepted the dispatch and booked an itinerary to Bakersfield on Amtrak. I got transport to the Train Station in Fullerton and checked in and checked bags. The train was a few minutes behind.

Amtrak #767 FUL-LAX Pacific Surfliner
Depart: Scheduled 10h45, actual 10h57
Arrive: Scheduled 11h25, actual 11h29

The train left Fullerton 12 minutes late and there were no intermediate stops before it arrived 4 minutes late at Los Angeles Union Station. I did not bother to go the Cafe Car due to the short duration of the trip.

Amtrak #5817 LAX-BFD Amtrak Thruway Bus Connection
Depart: Scheduled 11h55, actual 11h48
Arrive: Scheduled 14h45, actual 14h06
Reclaim checked bags 23 minutes after arrival

The bus left 7 minutes early and made an intermediate stop in Glendale. The bus arrived in Bakersfield 39 minutes early. I had to wait for my checked bags and I did some paperwork while I waited. After I reclaimed my checked bags I got transport to the shipper and checked in and loaded my gear and did inspection before a fellow "Benedict Arnold" signed the Bill of Lading and I was underway.

Trip: Bakersfield, CA to Point Magu, CA 128 paid miles
Make: 2015 Freightliner
Model: Bucket/Boom Truck
Transmission: Automatic
Route: California 99 to Interstate 5 to California 126 to California 118 to California 1
Maximum elevation: Tejon Pass 4,144 feet Interstate 5 one mile south of the Los Angeles/Kern county line
Highest diesel price USA: 3.999$ per gallon at Pilot Castaic, CA
Lowest diesel price USA: 3.759$ per gallon at Flying J Bakersfield, CA

I saw the fuel level was at a quarter tank and the tank was only 50 gallons so I knew I needed fuel. I actually headed north to the Flying J to take on fuel. The Flying J is north of Bakersfield and the GPS on my electronic logbook said shafter but the truckstop is actually considered to be in Bakersfield. Then I headed to Hodel's and took a quick look at the buffet and was not impressed so I headed to Milt's and found it was parked too full so I finally headed to Zingo's Cafe where I had evening rations consisting of a salad, fries and a ribeye steak sandwich. Afterward I continued south up and over the Grapevine and I took on a few more gallons of fuel in Castaic due to the burn rate. I ended up spending the night in Castaic, CA.

Wednesday I headed west on California 126 and enjoyed a scenic drive. Last time I took the 126 some areas were two lane but since then all of the 126 was twinned and some is actually expressway. I made a quick stop at Missile Park in Point Magu to take some pictures and phoned up the receiver to get clarity about directions then I headed to the drop location where the receiver took custody of the truck. After I dropped the truck I got transport to the Transit Centre in Oxnard where I bought a train ticket to Fullerton. It turned out the train was late so there was a wait.

Amtrak #782 OXN-FUL Pacific Surfliner
Depart: Scheduled 13h42, actual 14h20
Arrive: Scheduled 16h37, actual 16h41

I boarded the train and took a seat and the train left Oxnard 38 minutes late. The train made intermediate stops in Camarillo, Moorpark, Simi Valley, Chatsworth, Van Nuys, Burbank Airport, Glendale and Los Angeles Union Station before proceeding to Fullerton. I had late midday rations from the Cafe Car. There was a planned layover at Union Station which was shortened considerably allowing the train to make up some time and we arrived at Fullerton 4 minutes late. I got my checked bags and got transport home in time for the Christmas and New Year's Holidays.

Nice pics.

In some of the pics the place looks so deserted, it gives the feel of being in one of those Hitchcook like movies - I love it.

Thanks for another LC classic. I love the old brick buildings so common in the CBDs of middle America. You mentioned BBQ - next time you're in the Little Rock airport, check out the Whole Hog Cafe. Good stuff, especially the #3 sauce. ^
