Thanksgiving in Marrakech

I usually take a trip around Thanksgiving as it is that time of the year I have extra days off from work, most friends are with their families and I have basically nothing to do for 4 days.
I had never been to Morocco and thought it might be a relatively warm destination in November. The first few days it was, and I even got a sun burn! But subsequent days were rainy and chilly and rather unpleasant. November I suppose is a hit or miss. If I ever would be back, I probably go in October or April.

The flight was a straightforward BOS-MUC-RAK in J. To my embarrassment, I cannot remember much from boarding the plane in BOS until stumbling out of the lounge in MUC as the sleeping pill I took was rather powerful.
The plane ride to RAK was uneventful and upon arrival my driver from the riad awaited me and drove me in 20 minutes to the riad. Or rather, close to the riad as we had to walk through a couple alleys before getting to it. It turned out to be a wonderful riad with rooftop terrace, which could be a bit chilly in the morning.

The riad was located in the medina, the old part of Marrakech which is a maze of little alleys and passage ways. Easy to get lost! But wonderful in the early evening as shop owners wind down the day and the medina becomes a more tranquil place.

Although the alleys and passage ways can be quiet at night, the main square (Djem El Fna) is always busy! With the Koutoubia tower watching over it all, day and night.

The next day after arrival, I decided to visit the Majorelle Gardens. Designed and created by Yves Saint-Laurent. Marrakech is actually very famous for its many gardens, including the afformended, the Menara Gardens and the Agdal Gardens. Apart from the gardens, the city is noteworthy for its massive city walls that for the most part completely encircle the city with storks and all.

Towards the end of my stay when the weather became more rainy and chilly, I visited a couple of museums and the former Maderasa, a Koran school. Although Marrakech has plenty of palaces and museums, they tend to be rather bare bones and each can be seen in a hour or two.
After Marrakech, I spend I few days in Barcelona before heading with United back to Boston (via EWR).

It seems my camera (Canon S120) works best outdoors in sunny weather. When I try to photograph indoors, it always turns out hazy and unsharp. Maybe it got partly ruined in Bali by the enormous humidity...
I did make all photos myself, in case you were wondering if I stole some of them ;)

Hopefully the pics are now shown correctly ("uploaded" to post instead of linking to FT album).

Nice little TR. Thanks for the photos! We might visit Marrakesh next year, so this comes in handy.

I did not see any. It was rather chilly at night and decided not to wander around on Djemaa-El-Fna.
