FWIW, one of my friends has been trying to persuade me not to do any of this--she thinks it's all beyond my capacity. I don't know her source of information, but she says that Faroes hikes entail a 3,000-foot gain of elevation and last a minimum of six hours. I told her that I know my limits.

I realized I haven't given much in the way of example Faroese aside from a few placenames, so here's a nice sign:
https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8625/2...3aa1d9fe_z.jpg Google Translate doesn't work with Faroese, although you can sometimes get partial translations with Icelandic, since the languages are similar. For example, I recognize that "Góšu tit" is basically "Welcome [you]", "Hjįlpiš okkum" is "Help us", and "grasinum" is "grass (plural)". Welcome - Help us (to) keep ??? clean and beautiful and not walk on the grass. The only word I don't know is ųkiš. This was an epic TR. Thanks for sharing. Edited to add: with the help of this, ųkiš means "the area". |
Wow, wow, wow! Just stumbled upon this now and it is a stunning report. I visited the Faroe Islands in 2015 and it was beautiful!

awesome TR and what wonderful photos
a very enjoyable afternoon read Thanks |
Absolutely awesome report, OP. I am going in May, have been fascinated with the FI ever since I found out they existed back in 1995, and this was perfect to give me some ideas about places to visit.
|
Wow amazing report and very timely! I will also be in the Faroes in May for 3 nights. Short trip so probably won't see as much as you did or get in as much hiking. I did manage to get a seat for Koks at the shared table my first night there!

Great TR! |

For Mykines: hiking.fo For Traelanipan: Free no more, dear tourist! It will now cost 67 USD to hike from Mišvįgur to Tręlanķpan - Local.fo |

I was unfortunately not able to visit Mykines. Despite going during June, which has the best weather in the year, it was so windy that our flight was cancelled the first day. The 2nd day, it was again windy, but our flight made it to the island but couldn't land. We circled Vagar for an hour until we had to divert to Bergen airport lest we run out of fuel. Pilot made one last attempt to land before having to divert, and we were finally able to land. It was very bumpy though, and my SO who is already slightly afraid of flying, vowed to never return again. We then found out that our Mykines ferry was cancelled due to weather (as well as all of the helicopter rides). Since you have to book it ahead of time, it was completely booked for the next 7 days (our entire stay on FI). So unfortunately I did not fulfill my wish to hang out with the puffins :( Don't let that dissuade you though. FI is beautiful and we have a wonderful time. I would definitely return if my SO would ever get over her fear of landing in rough weather :) |

One major change I know that has happened since this TR: you now need a permit to do some of the hikes due to increased popularity, Mykines and Traelanipan being the big ones. You have to get a permit online from hiking.fo and be prepared to show it to access the peninsula.

Brilliant TR, this is one of the many places still on my list to visit.
Places like this fascinate me, I'm visiting Svalbard later this year, being on the opposite side of the planet these places (like Greenland, Faroes, Svalbard, etc.) aren't a long weekend any more, proximity is one of the things I miss from when I lived in the UK. Anyway, thanks OP! |
Very Fascinating Trip Report to an exotic place. Thanks for taking the time and effort.

We are going in July - if you are renting a car (especially an automatic car) - you will need to book months in advance.
We did find an automatic for 4 days for 2040DKK with Avis, but it only has 400km included, which *should* be enough |

We used Unicar.fo. I think it was 2600DKK for 6 days, unlimited mileage. Was supposed to be a manual VW Golf, but got a manual BMW X1 instead. |

Last edit: So this article is for the hike from Midvagur, but when I asked on hiking.fo I was directed to a 60 EUR hike "Mykines." Is that REALLY the hiking fee we have to pay? Seems pretty steep. All I see when I search says "the fee is payable on hiking.fo" but I can't figure out where. That site sent me the message with very little info in it.

For Mykines, they've got a guy at the fence to the peninsula with a phone who can swipe credit cards. If you didn't pay in advance, you can pay there.
Oh awesome, is it the same $60~ each? That just seems so steep! |
In the Faroes now. The Traelanipan/Sorsvagatn lake hike is 200 DKK ($30) per person or 450 DKK with a guide.

https://visitfaroeislands.com/see-do...-restrictions/ KOKS was quite amazing. I had booked a seat at the communal 8-person table and had a great group. Even more magical, a blizzard blew through (twice) while we were eating.. when we went in the landscape was green and it was white by the time we finished dinner. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...54ee5c0eca.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cb2abb27d7.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3ed48fdc42.jpg Lucked out with the Kallur lighthouse trail as well, it had been raining all the way from Torshavn, but got to Kalsoy and the sun came out. Until I got to the top at the lighthouse and a rain squall came through with bitterly cold fierce wind and rain, so didn't go out to the extra ridges. Then the sun came out again about halfway back down the trail... |
