Too good to pass up Z fare on the inaugural SIN-SFO flight
I had been looking at the possibility of the June 3rd SIN-SFO inaugural flight about six weeks ago when I learned I had to be in the US and Europe for meetings around the same six-day period. The thought of getting on that flight as part of RTW was too tempting.
Unfortunately, UA did not make Z fare available and my original ticketed itinerary was PEK-SFO-WAS-LHR-VIE-PEK. About two weeks ago, I found out by accident, UA made Z available for the inaugural flight, and immediately I cleanse through the *A RTW engine looking flights to get down to Singapore. I was able to get on the PEK-SIN SQ flight and then onto the SIN-SFO a day later. The rest of the itinerary stays the same. For some unknown reasons, the RTW ended up being cheaper going through SIN on SQ, then my original ticket of going PEK-SFO on UA. |
Pre Departure PEK-SIN
Got into PEK around 10:30 am for the midnight SQ flight.

PEK SQ BGS Lounge
I skipped dinner before heading to the airport, and was really hungry. BGS lounge was fairly empty when I arrived and I managed to find some food to satisfy my empty stomach. SQ offers 2 meal time options on the red eye fight: after take off or before landing. I did feel like sleeping with a full stomach and decided to eat a little before the flight, so I could sleep immediately after take off.

PRE Boarding
SQ 801 red eye flight has been frequent flight of mine for the past l2 months. I love flying SQ for its services and consistency in its on board offerings. The Red eye flights enable to to get to SGN, BKK, KUL and SIN for meetings without sacrificing working hours on the planes.
The red eye flights seem always packed with business and tourist passengers. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971283/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971286/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971287/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971290/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971290/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971294/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971293/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971296/enhance |

Looking forward to this one! Thanks for posting. It's nice that UA actually sent out a schedule for the inaugural flight. I don't recall AA doing this.

I often wonder why airlines are compelled to have thick menus in the premium cabins. It is costly and bad for the environment considering how many trees need to be cut down to have menus on thousands of flights each day. Now that IFE screens are standard offerings in most of the premium cabins, why not have the menus displayed on the screen. Some airport hotel eating establishments are already offering iPad-type of electronic menus.

SQ 801 3 of 4
The only gripe I have about SQ's Red eye intra-Asia flight is its food offering.
It is significantly less than the regular lunch and dinner services but at the same fare level. I heard the same from fellow elite SQ flyers, but comments do not seem to register with the SQ customer services department. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971329/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971331/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971333/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971334/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971337/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971337/enhance |
SQ 801 4 of 4
One of the nice things about SQ is the way it furnishes and designs the inflight lavatory and frequent cleaning by the FA. Lavatory is spotless mostly of the time.

Singapore T3 Arrival
There is really nothing negative to say about Singapore's Changi International Airport. Truly an outstanding world class facility and customer services. It makes you want to fly or transit there.
I timed that it took me less than 30 min from my landing to the hotel located in the center of the city. Now that is truly fast immigration, luggage and custom services, and local infrastructure to support the roads in and out of the airport. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971355/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971357/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971358/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971361/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971393/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971395/enhance |
Grand Hyatt Singapore
There are better and newer hotel options in Singapore. Unfortunately I would not put Marina Bay Sands in that category (we reserve it for another trip report), but Grand Hyatt Singapore is home away from home to me when staying in Singapore.
It is an older hotel but you cannot beat the location and customer services. I feel I am home every time I walk through its lobby. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971396/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971362/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971365/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971366/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971384/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971389/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971388/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971373/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971373/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971369/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971378/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971380/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971381/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971384/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971399/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971407/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971408/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971412/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971411/enhance |
June 3 - on my way to Changi
I was up at 5 am getting ready to go to the airport for the 8:45 am inaugural flight. An email invitation was sent overnight about a ceremony planned.
https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...831744/enhance I also checked on my United App for the latest flight status. BusinessFirst is pretty full, and the incoming flight was scheduled to land early. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971414/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971415/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971417/enhance The 787-9 that is doing the both legs of inaugural flight has been in service for almost 17 months. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971402/enhance I checked out and jumped into a taxi heading to Terminal 2. There was no traffic on the road and I was at the airport in about 15 min. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...971420/enhance |
Changi 1 of 2
United moved from T3 to T2 at Changi on May 24. There have been quite a few complaints on the United Forum on the move. T2 is still an excellent terminal, IMHO.
United check in counter is located direct behind Door 4 walking into the terminal. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978702/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978703/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978706/enhance On this side, the check in area felt festive with decoration to celebrate the inaugural SIN-SFO flight. https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978706/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978711/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978711/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978715/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978721/enhance https://im1.shutterfly.com/ng/servic...978719/enhance I was only passenger at the Global Service Check in counter and it took less than a minute to check my bag and got my boarding pass. The agent was very cheerful on this historical date. I received invitation to use the SATs Gateway Premium Lounge and an invitation to the inaugural ceremony. I asked the agent if I could use Silverkris Lounge or the Krisflyer Gold Lounge instead, and the answer was no. Those two lounges are pretty packed for SQ passengers. I will try it next time using my PPS card to see if I can gain access using the UA board pass. |
Awesome trip - looking forward to the rest of your report!
