QR F - Al Safwa - Dubai, Al Maha, Abu Dhabi & Memorable Events in the Desert

This will be my first trip report on FT, as I usually prefer to post only tiny snippets of my travels on my other thread, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...aily-shot.html.
The reason I'm making an exception to my own rule here is because this trip was very special to me, as those of you who'll follow me along my journey will find out. Without further ado, here's the itinerary:

-QR F CDG-DOH
-Al Safwa First Class Lounge
-The Doha Airport Hotel
-QR Regional F DOH-DXB
-Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah
-Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa
-St Regis Abu Dhabi Saadiyat Island
-QR Regional F DXB-DOH
-Al Mourjan Business Class Lounge
-QR J DOH-CDG

Thanks NA-Flyer! I really liked this display, as it illustrates the elegance of the Al Safwa Lounge pretty well.

The F ground experience at CDG is a disgrace as QR departs from T1, the ugliest airport terminal in the whole universe. I didn't even bother going to the (shared) lounge, as it is 30 years past its prime (if it ever had a prime). Schlepping your hand luggage along the endless tunnels that look as if they come straight out of a 1960 Sci-Fi movie is a pretty surreal experience, almost to the point it's funny. The only thing that makes you carry on is the perspective of getting a glass (or five) of chilled Krug Taittinger Comtes de Champagne soon afterwards.

Oops, wrong way.

Almost there...

Home for the next 6.5 hours. I can understand why Jennifer Aniston is asking about flying in this just a bit longer. But wait, that's on another airline.

The cabin is really gorgeous and feels very spacious. Of course it didn't hurt that we were the only two passengers.

Finally settled in and enjoying the first drink. The fact that QR has taken Krug off its wine list is a mystery to me, when did ME3 airlines start caring about costs?
I mean, Champagne & Caviar are among the two most talked-about subjects on FT when it comes to comparing the F experience on top airlines, so why would QR downgrade its Champagne selection when the other big two Gulf carriers aren't?

This is what you get instead: (being originally from Bavaria I don't really care whether they serve Krug or Comtes, as I prefer a chilled Hefeweizen anyway. Please don't judge... )

FT heaven: does life get any better than this?

As the day started to fade, I decided to go to the bar for that glass of Krug after all. It's really pretty absurd that F passengers have to walk to the back of the plane in order to get the same stuff they used to get in the front.

The bar was as empty as the F cabin, which means I had this baby all for myself.

Conclusion: a wonderful flight, probably as good as it gets. The only downside: it was way too short.

Up Next: The Al Safwa lounge

Taittinger comtes blanc de blanc is no less of a champagne than Krug and many champagne aficionados would argue its a step up. In fact in many wine stores it is more expensive... Definitely more exclusive / hard to get, than Krug

Subscribed because of the fantastic pictures and also because QR F has two seats available this time next year for CDG and LHR which fit my schedule.

Thanks for your comment, avm2806. Comtes is a fine champagne no doubt, but based on my research at a few wine/champagne dealers it is quite a bit cheaper. In Paris for example you'll have no difficulty finding a bottle of Comtes for 120-130 euros, whereas a bottle of Krug will cost 160-180 at a minimum. My comment about downgrading the champagne selection was thus purely based on the retail price, not on the taste.

Thanks a lot dctravels74. QR F is a wonderful product, my only advice would be to book it to BKK, as both LHR-DOH and CDG-DOH are way too short.
