Air Canada 787 Premium Economy - Just the seats, ma'am.

Hi folks,

Another in the series of "the best seat not-very-much-money can buy", today we're on a domestic hop on one of Air Canada's new 787 Dreamliners, and taking advantage of one of AC's few truly reasonable policies.

We'll see how long this lasts, but as of writing, AC won't sell you a Premium Economy fare within North America, only on trans-oceanic flights. So, if they're repositioning a 787 from Toronto to Vancouver for a mid-day flight to Asia, on the Toronto-Vancouver leg they'll sell you the P.E. seats for the same price as an exit row. This is currently true on the 787 and 777-HD only.

Just the seat, mind you, in all other respects you're flying regular economy, but as nobody's done a TR showing the Premium seats yet, I thought this might be useful.

- Itinerary: YYZ-YVR
- Airline: Air Canada
- Aircraft: Boeing 787-8
- Flight Number: AC 103
- On time departure: no (45min late)
- On time arrival: no (35min late)
- Miles: 2295
- Flight time: 4:53
- Seat: 13D
- Class: Premium Economy seats, Tango fare.

It's a decent-sized seat. 38" pitch and 19.5" width, as compared to 37-38" and 21" for a business-class seat on Air Canada's A320-1s or E190s.

Enough room to open a full-size Macbook, without worrying that the git in front will suddenly ram his seat back and smash the screen.

Really proper legroom, a nice footrest, and enough space under the seat that I can take off my size 13's and still have room to stretch out.

Not so for the bulkhead row, so taller buyers beware. Also an interesting shot of the no-shade, tinted windows on the 787, doing their best against an 8AM sunrise.

A nice little hook on which to hang your earbuds.

Certainly some of the best IFE you're going to find on an economy product - selection isn't quite as good as Cathay, but otherwise new and shiny.

USB and Power at every seat.

I think that's about it!

Awesome!

Is there a daily flight for this?
I would totally pay the upgrade for this. Well that is if YYZ - YVR flights ever drop in price. $900 to go across the country in Y seems insane!

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in, but I'll be on the 788 quite a lot this year in the PY seats between YYZ and YVR (which as we all know domestically is a preferred seat).

I keep wanting to try these seats, but every time I'm on the flight, the PE cabin is full, so I can't just grab one for a few minutes

It's not Economy, It's Premium Economy on the 787

Thanks for the post -- exactly what I was looking for! How does it compare to PE on an AC 777? They appear to be totally different products.

From everything I've seen, the 787 and the 777 PY seats are very similar. Except for the obvious difference of 2-3-2 on the 787 vs 2-4-2 on the 77P.

This is the only video I could find on Youtube of the 777 PY seat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7341-XEUcEc

(there are some very serious inaccuracies of what service is actually provided complimentary on domestic flights in that video, but ignore those...)

On the 787, there's a small table-like thing between seats. Not on the 777HD.

Just booked YYZ-ZRH on 788 and MUC-YYZ on 789 on PE, LGA-YYZ-ZRH/MUC-TXL total all in was $2100, with front of the line opportunity for eUp to J. I'd say it's a good deal vs FLEX for a difference of $400-500!
