I believe JDiver was referring to the first (initial) flat J seat CX had installed which was very tight and coffin-like. The new J seat is quite good, and is the same one AA uses on the 77W.

CX First Class should certainly not disappoint.

Nice detailed report. Thanks.

BTW, did you notice if there are air vents on the sides of J cabin? You slept so well, thought the cabin temp must have been ok with you

It looks like there are only 3 seats in the MCE center section (per the photo). I thought that MCE was going to be 3-4-3 on the 772?

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I think there were no vents, but the temperature seemed to be OK. What I forgot to add is that the air felt much more dry on 772.

Another thing I forgot to add is that lavatories on 772 were not as spacious as on 77W.

There has been some discussion on whether I felt 772 seat was superior in comfort compared to 77W, the answer is - no. I still think that 77W is the best J in terms of comfort and privacy on AA.

Comparing retrofitted 772 and 763 I would rank 772 higher in terms of privacy and 763 in terms of space, but of course with the lack of built-in IFE and almost no privacy. So it really depends on what's more important for you.

That last row of J facing Y, complete with the sea trough curtain, must make for some seriously awkward staring !

On the previous 777-200 configuration, that awkward gap between J and Y was covered after takeoff. Did you happen to notice whether that's still the case?

The 763s that will fly transatlantic are also in the process of being refitted with new lie flat seats.
The 763s are getting the Vantage (staggered business class).

Sorry, didn't pay attention to that, so cannot comment.

The Cirrus seat is really, IMO, the best business class in the sky. It is the perfect blend of privacy, space, comfort and layout. Just flew CX in the same seat and slept great.
I've flown the cirrus seat on CX and AA (A321T), I assume the 77W seat is pretty close. I guess I just dont' get it with this new seat, it doesn't look like it is pitched shorter than the 77W Cirrus seat, but you give up the shoulder room and storage space in exchange for having nothing above your feet instead of your feet in a cubby. Not a good trade IMO, but this is still an improvement over what was there before.

Even if the pitch is marginally shorter, having shorter pitch doesn't help until it adds up to a full row. Assuming around 45" pitch in J, you'd need to be 4" shorter than the cirrus seat to get an extra row. I doubt it is 4" shorter.

Do you think AA ever pre-tested these seats and the cabin layout (forward and backward facing seats, seat width and space, ability to look out the window, etc) with actual passengers before they committed to what I think is a bizzare layout ? Do 50% of the people actually prefer to fly backwards? Certainly not me.

Most people don't care about forward vs backwards, and those that do have 50% of the seats to choose from. If this helps increase J density, it also helps with potential upgrades. I'd rather fly backward than in coach.

Have you flown rear facing seats before? They're actually pretty comfortable if you give them a chance...

Was assigned to 13A, rear-facing C on the UA 747, a few years back. Haven't gone back to forward facing seats on UA since the. Absolutely love rear facing.

All 772s will be refitted but it will be some time before the fleet is complete. They are way behind the original schedule and only 1 is complete with another 3 to be completed in the next 6 weeks. At that rate it will take a couple of years most likely to get to all of the fleet of the 47 of them. Approximately half of the 767's will be reconfigured with 4 currently completed. The rest will be phased out with the introduction of the 787 over the next 3 years.

So, it will be very hit or miss for both aircraft for some time.
