Look inside America
I use a Blur song as the title of this TR because I think it fits perfectly.
After years without a real holiday, at the beginning of 2014 I decide it is the right time to take the lady on a trip to the US western parks. I understand most of you FTers are Americans – you will not see any exotic destination here. But for a European, that has been quite a trip, and one of the things I had in my once-in-a-lifetime list. Having this trip in 2014 is ideal because:
Playing with Matrix I manage to get this basic itinerary: FCO-LAX-FCO for 2400 € total. This includes FCO-LAX in Y (booking class upgradeable to J with AZ BusinessForYou) and LAX-FCO in T (upgradeable to J with 35k miles per person). Good, but I can do better. I then try to add PHX, since my itinerary will lead me there: 2200 € total. Good, but I can still do better. I add LIN on return (since Mme straniera will have to fly to LIN anyway): 2000 € total. Ok, now I am happy with the results. I know I can still do better – or save money using other booking classes. But this is not a mileage run, it’s a holiday, and besides, I can score two J flights at what I consider a fair price: 1000 € per person. I call CFP call center and in some 30 minutes, adjusting the flight dates, I have my tickets reserved with confirmed upgrades. Due to unavailability of upgrade space on the way back, I opt for a LAX-JFK-FCO. The final itinerary is then: FCO-LAX (AZ J) – LAX-PHX (DL Y) LAX-JFK (DL Y) – JFK-FCO (AZ J) – FCO-LIN (AZ Y) During this trip we will see, in this order: Phoenix – Oak Creek – Grand Canyon – Flagstaff – Monument valley – Lake Powell – St. George – Zion national – Bryce Canyon – Kodachrome basin – Dixie forest – Brian Head (!) – Salt Lake City – Idaho Falls – Yellowstone – San Francisco – Stockton – Yosemite – Tulare – Sequoia – Ridgecrest – Death valley – Rhyolite – Las Vegas – Los Angeles. Red for the car, blue for flights, trains or buses: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/...c8c0c48a_b.jpg The final program looks like this: 14 days, ~6000 mi / 10000 km, 14 Hilton properties, 2 hand luggages and 2 bags, 4 rented cars, 3 buses, 2 internal flights and 1 train – the California Zephyr! Things will change during the holiday, thanks to a landslide and a bunch of hobos, but not so much. We will not be able to explore everything top to bottom, but at least we will get a grasp of everything and may decide to come back someday to the most impressive places. Day 1 Fast forward a couple of months and it’s departure day! We head for the airport using the dirty local train and get past immigration in a minute. The plane – not very visible from my position: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/...17a43c35_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3923/...676c0806_b.jpg The lounge is meh, like every other airside lounge at FCO: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3884/...fb477af1_b.jpg but luckily after a little while it’s boarding time. FCO-LAX AZ 620 10:20 22:25 (14:25 local) Seat 05E / 05G (J) Gates open and I am immediately selected for hand luggage check. Now, I have nothing against baggage checks – they sort of make me feel better knowing someone does some actual checks sometimes. What irritates me is the guard rummaging through my things without wearing gloves. After my remark gloves magically appear, though. Since I’m not carrying anything illegal (or at least I’m very good at hiding… hey, just kidding!) they let me go and we can reach our seats. Some pics of the cabin: The very private 5L seat: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3877/...d60de59b_b.jpg Rest of the cabin: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3891/...8abe06e2_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5569/...412b38d6_b.jpg View from the seat: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5573/...77eab9c6_b.jpg Compared to my last AZ TATL flight, which I carefully reviewed here, this plane seems clean and less worn out. Now, one small excursus about Mme straniera. She is worried because it’s her first flight outside of Europe, she is not a huge fan of flying (ye, I know… she must have other qualities /angel) and it will last 14+ hours. Even though I spent the last three weeks mentioning how on a big plane you feel turbulences way less and how the flights are mostly uneventful, she spent the last three weeks claiming she will be too worried to even get out of her seat to go the bathroom and she will be scared for 14+ hours by any unnatural noise she hears. Knowing that all, I opt for a shock therapy made of booze and ugly movies. This proved to work on several other occasions and I am confident it will work this time as well. The difference is noticeable: here she is after sitting down, pretending to be calm and smiling (the black stripes ruin the effect but I need to protect the innocents): https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3858/...d8ac5b2a_b.jpg and here she is after welcome-on-board sparkles and red wines during lunch: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3856/...3ebba10f_b.jpg As you can see, a smile is appearing on her cheeks. Mission accomplished! I am also happy to report she managed to get up from her seat at least 4 times, and she also *dared* to open the curtain on the galley window to see outside. Upon landing she said: lovely! And in a minute, she was convinced to RTW in 2015. But that’s another story, and hopefully another TR. Back to this TR, shortly after takeoff tables are set and lunch starts. Standard AZ layout. I love the salt and pepper thingies: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5583/...4a8d2470_b.jpg Choice of wines: Montefalcone rosso DOP Colpetrone 2001 and Joel Vigneti Storici Garda DOP Classico Groppello Ca’ Maiol 2011: 9 / 10. As usual, no pics, but lots of glasses. Country style cheesed filled pizza: 8 / 10. Good. Far better than the frozen carrots from my other TR. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/...c7573a77_b.jpg FAs bring the tray to the cabin and prepare the dish in front of you, asking what pasta you want (both) and how much you want (much): https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5553/...739237db_b.jpg Matera style cavatelli and basil and tomato pasta: 10 / 10. Yummi! Being Italian, I am picky about three things, and one of these is food. Eating pasta al dente on a plane makes me happy. Double round and I’m ready for the main course. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3840/...c7649bea_b.jpg Bari style veal: 8 / 10. Soft and tender, very tasteful. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/...c81c7ff2_b.jpg Licorice cake: 9 / 10. I also eat my gf’s since she’s stuffed. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3865/...b7fe98eb_b.jpg Dessert wine: Semèle Montefalco Sagrantino Passito DOCG Signae Cesarini Sartori 2007 barely visible on the left: 8 / 10. I’m not a huge fan of passito, but it is good nonetheless. This sentence is copied over from the other TR, as is the wine. Several glasses of red wine after, it’s time for some pics. We are there: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/...006e3625_b.jpg Golly gosh, the banchisa! https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/...00b8d64b_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3900/...040d72b1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3911/...3b0d67b4_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5568/...7393b223_b.jpg The flight goes on uneventful and I can get some sleep. I also remember watching a movie but cannot remember which one. Fully lie flat: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/...7411e7fc_b.jpg Trying crosswords after all the wine is bad. Somewhere between here https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3844/...4eb18822_b.jpg and there https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5582/...4bdc737a_b.jpg breakfast is served. Breakfast: 7,5 / 10. I was still stuffed and did not enjoy it as much as I could. My vote could have been higher otherwise. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3875/...6bf8d06f_b.jpg After landing in time, we get to the immigration and clear it in less than 10 minutes. I think this is one of the perks of being among the first to disembark, in fact while we get out I see hordes and hordes of people approaching and I’m happy to be through already. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5582/...bf2fc031_b.jpg This thing moves. Not in my pic, but it moves. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3869/...82278b81_b.jpg We change terminal and get to Delta lounge: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5582/...4445e22b_b.jpg I can’t think of a single reason why I would photograph the roof, but here goes: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3875/...822f7c4e_b.jpg After 3 long hours it’s time to board the flight to PHX. LAX-PHX DL 4598 18:06 19:27 Seats 05A 05B (Y) Just a quick shot of the cabin: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3911/...194eba31_b.jpg and a hanging plane (I think we’re in PHX already – after 16 hours of flight, 3 hours of wait and with my body thinking it’s 5 am the day after I am feeling a bit dizzy) https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5553/...301e8542_b.jpg We get to the Phoenix Hilton Garden Inn: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5561/...a0f72faa_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3918/...ccf6765a_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5583/...141d4d2b_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3840/...7607998b_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...0cf30d36_b.jpg |
Day 2
The morning after I start with a light breakfast: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/...3e085072_b.jpg My American lifestyle! Just to make it clear: I love that food, I ate the best burgers ever during this holiday, and I love this country – I wouldn’t be flying there for holidays otherwise. However, the difference with my food habits is quite noticeable here. We ask the person at the reception how to get to the Enterprise rent a car and he, with extreme kindness, organizes for the Hilton pick up to take us there for free. We get a Chevrolet Sonic and spend the next 20 minutes with the lady telling us how to drive automatic. I must admit I have been absolutely impressed by the kindness and the level of service we got in Arizona and afterwards in Utah and Idaho – a level unthinkable for current Italian standards. We have lots to learn in this regard. Anyway, we hop on the car and begin our trip towards Oak Creek: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3858/...125dd7a1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3902/...250ffc8d_b.jpg Skunk road (literally translated from Italian): https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5589/...bbef4bf6_b.jpg Someone with a huge cactus in the back of the truck: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3838/...2f08a81f_b.jpg And we finally get to Oak Creek and Sedona: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5595/...b6f0b6f0_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3846/...bfef8a10_b.jpg It took me a while to see Snoopy’s belly: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/...35e72ce7_b.jpg Lunch in Sedona and we’re off to Grand Canyon: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3912/...a79e7fa8_b.jpg We look for a helicopter ride but the winds are too strong and all flights are canceled for the day. Too bad! The Canyon is impressive and pics cannot show how vast it is: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3924/...41bfab70_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3910/...b8484dff_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3850/...b9354cce_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3905/...97a4de59_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5587/...0681a5ab_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/...7cbea371_b.jpg On the way back: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/...3cf4940d_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3892/...98ccbfac_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3864/...cac904e3_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3840/...6e73f8ee_b.jpg After the visit we head to Hilton Flagstaff Garden Inn: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3916/...e207a691_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/...8e9663fc_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5594/...b5d99136_b.jpg I just remember this from dinner: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/...552b28c7_b.jpg |
Day 4
Usual light breakfast and then Antelope canyon! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3853/...50a71818_b.jpg I love and I love and I love all of this: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...9db70238_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3918/...5dbe6204_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3863/...043c6a8f_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3865/...3566e716_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/...6a980eeb_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/...ddc9ae30_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3863/...f542ac85_b.jpg The weather is still not good and I am sure the colors here are far more beautiful than what we see, but the canyon is still fascinating. The Navajo guide explains the history of the canyon in a tour that lasts approximately one hour. It is not possible to visit the canyon without a guided tour. Going down: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5593/...e1bf6179_b.jpg Trying to hide: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/...964fe561_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3890/...a4c85140_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3893/...3e60c29e_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3840/...7710e6fe_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3839/...6b85a72e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/...92249d2d_b.jpg On the way to St. George we stop at the panoramic view of Lake Powell: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3888/...1db0f821_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5587/...6e10ebc1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3891/...a7f4b2b5_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/...997f89d5_b.jpg A bus. Hey, it’s like being in a movie! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3920/...415d1df3_b.jpg We reach Hampton Inn St. George in the late afternoon: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3883/...1a254c45_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/...ffc6480f_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3847/...2c88199d_b.jpg Creative way to use a table: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3924/...928284e0_b.jpg We ask the person at the reception where to eat and we are advised to go to Casa Dona Maria, a Mexican restaurant: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...46f62974_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3865/...5377b452_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/...354ab0bf_b.jpg Fair quality, no more no less. |
Day 5
Starbucks finally: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/...7158e772_b.jpg I don’t know what it is for but I like it: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...9967f7e7_b.jpg Today we’re going to Zion national park. We get there mid morning and take immediately the free bus (only hotel guests or people with special permits can use the car inside the canyon). Zion is beautiful: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3912/...56598dc1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3900/...deb45e99_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3842/...5ac66f9e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5557/...d528ee97_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...00fe689f_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/...87c91968_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/...94b50354_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5553/...1e4d9946_b.jpg After the visit we hop on the car and run to Bryce canyon, after a quick visit to Subway that I can’t help but document here: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5552/...203c05e7_b.jpg Bryce canyon is… wow. Just wow. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5593/...4db8b00a_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5582/...f8f45ca5_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3904/...32bbd7c1_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5575/...e88c8cf1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3871/...0efd7a27_b.jpg Still not happy with the day, we get to Kodachrome basin: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/...f46c7a1d_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3846/...17ffa4ea_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/...c6ded5c3_b.jpg This park cannot be visited with the America the beautiful pass, and it’s far from the beaten path. However! It’s a wonderful park, it’s quiet, silent and not crowded, well worth a visit. For the night we are supposed to get to Brian Head. Pics on the way… https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/...568837af_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3843/...e360df05_b.jpg Dixie national forest: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/...95556cb1_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/...573c4460_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3853/...e7528dca_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3853/...01e88a02_b.jpg I chose the Hilton Brian Head hotel because of the mountain beautiful view, but when we get there, there is no Hilton property. Turns out the hotel left the Hilton chain a few weeks before. Mmm. Well mr. Hilton could have told me, instead of allowing me to make a reservation. Anyway, we get to the hotel since the reservation is valid: it is really nice, and there are very few visitors; only 3 rooms are occupied. As beautiful as it is, I can’t help but think about the Overlook hotel. Anyway here are the pics: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3906/...f6c6d2dc_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/...2958ab80_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...4a8386bd_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5557/...c1a39748_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5561/...a0b91b67_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/...56433bdd_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/...d514464e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/...d6c726b2_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/...57a35abd_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3847/...528ba6c3_b.jpg For dinner I have probably the best steak so far, but the wines are ‘marsalati’ – they taste like liquor because the bottles have been left open since the last visitors three months before. For a 10$ glass, I’m very unhappy; I notify the waiter and he feels mortified. He gets me another glass from a new bottle and doesn’t make me pay for the wine in the end. He’s been very good in turning a bad situation into a win. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5559/...86cdefc3_b.jpg |
Day 6
Quick breakfast at La Boulangerie Marie: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5558/...62287655_b.jpg We return the car and use this day to take Greyhounds from Cedar City to SLC and then to Idaho Falls. An entire day goes by. Now, I had a different memory of Greyhound buses – but the one we used to SLC is in very bad shape, with a noticeable smell – there are around 10 people that look like hobos going to SLC for the hobos festival (this is the word one of them uses). Also, the bus is more than 90 minutes late, and we may lose our connection in SLC. The stop in Cedar City: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5559/...432a7c0e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5568/...ffd81f6c_b.jpg Luckily we get just in time in SLC and catch the minivan to Idaho Falls: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3922/...76b8d343_b.jpg The difference in quality is huge. We get to Hampton Inn Idaho Falls at around 10 pm: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5590/...f7340aa2_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3852/...190e9047_b.jpg |
Day 7
Well… breakfast. Need say more? The combo sausage and muffin works wonders if you plan to spend your day stuffed and thirsty. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5574/...ffeb4f78_b.jpg The day after we get a new car (a Nissan) and head to Yellowstone. The temperature is very low (we’re close to Canadian border after all) and it’s snowy: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5596/...e924d057_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5580/...7fab4e5d_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/...88d974b3_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3895/...326b7dbd_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5588/...510cc6a0_b.jpg After around two hours we enter the park: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3904/...1b76164c_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3843/...923a84bd_b.jpg We spend our morning surrounded by bison: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5554/...27082d80_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/...fc001f1c_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3892/...ac56f37f_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3854/...1e8fd8ba_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3876/...d327f39b_b.jpg And we get to a restaurant on the upper side of the park where I enjoy a bison bratwurst (yea!) and some horrible cheese fries (ugh): https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3881/...8611373c_b.jpg After lunch, quick visit to Liberty Cap and we move towards Grand Prismatic. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...8c48e920_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3859/...63e76c5e_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/...295c0e9d_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5551/...3a3d63cd_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...0ea09daa_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5565/...dd779c85_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5580/...c5af9e31_b.jpg I already know by that time that I will not see it, and when we get there a snowstorm begins, so here’s the only thing I could see: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/...09988c50_b.jpg Sigh, sigh. I was so looking forward to that, even though with hindsight, I may have realized in advance that it was still winter. I’ll be back. I also obliterate a camera lens trying to use it in the storm, completely drain the camera battery and proceed to steal the gf’s tablet for the next round of photos. Luckily, there are other springs in the park and we stop to see the beautiful Sapphire pool: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3855/...1d0aa1a2_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3873/...3692b9d6_b.jpg We then head to Garden Inn Idaho Falls and finish our day at Outback steakhouse. The food is very very good, and the winner of today’s name challenge goes to my dessert: Chocolate Thunder From Down Under! I feel so proud of eating it. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...57c8f67d_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3872/...8456c251_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3869/...fa651d32_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3871/...859610f9_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3843/...7e5b86b2_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5572/...c3074acb_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3842/...5999a3d3_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3880/...35c3fd8f_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3912/...d7417a8e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5563/...7c0a026b_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3905/...36e098bb_b.jpg |
Day 8
Another transportation day. The Salt Lake Express bus is very clean and takes us in no time to SLC. The plan for the day is to wait a couple of hours in the train station and get the California Zephyr to Reno. Another thing I’ve been really looking forward to. However we face a few problems:
Anyway, with the gf being uncomfortable (and me not that happy either), we check the various solutions we have and decide for a hotel in SLC and a day driving to San Francisco the day after. The hotel is, needless to say, the Hampton Inn Salt Lake City, where we arrive at about midnight: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3842/...e5448c65_b.jpg |
Day 9
Light breakfast! I’m getting older. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/...71f6b6b0_b.jpg Taxi to the airport (the rental offices there open sooner than in the rest of the city), we rent a Passat and we get ready to face 10 hours driving through Nevada. Nevada, by the way, is beautiful, for what we can see, even though we decide not to stop to take pictures since the road ahead is long. Just a quick stop in Winnemucca to finally try Taco Bell: tasty! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3907/...e4ec7146_b.jpg Potato road! https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...77af4747_b.jpg The scenery changes dramatically from Nevada to California, and after a long while we return the car at the SFO airport and take the shuttle to Hilton Doubletree San Francisco airport: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5559/...9e85f557_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3880/...b7992ca4_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/...7f6b0c09_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/...ea40ea93_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3923/...a46ca056_b.jpg After 5 minutes of complete immobility I realize she’s only pretending to read, but she’s totally asleep: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5554/...9dcab848_b.jpg After waking up (‘Sorry I was pondering’) we order chicken with something (her) and the ultimate burger (me) – sorry too tired to write down the names: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...219cfa69_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3843/...0fbcbc63_b.jpg |

We return the car, head to Hilton Doubletree Las Vegas: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3880/...5bfc5157_b.jpg I was about to say I like the… but realized it’s better if I say that I like the logo! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3893/...f9cbd62d_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...1eb8890e_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3876/...b765993d_b.jpg We venture in the city of thousand lights: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3881/...2f814c22_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/...5686a52a_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...0df3b53f_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5551/...6258ba21_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5553/...63553806_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/...1053a6d7_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5588/...37649ff1_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5556/...654f4354_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3926/...b88045c0_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3861/...4631fed6_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3879/...9ab6b336_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3924/...987f5e53_b.jpg Words cannot describe the folly. Being the kind and generous soul I am, I give the miss all the money she needs to play the slot machines. When she wins this enormous amount of money, she claims it’s her own and refuses to split! Ahhh… women: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3863/...6531383f_b.jpg I drain the battery on the way out, so no night pics. Sigh. |
Day 14
LAS airport: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5556/...5675b7c7_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5575/...f0a53a68_b.jpg LAS-LAX DL 4532 09:55 11:10 Seats 05A 05B (Y) Flight delayed by 2 hours. I take advantage of the delay to deep dive in the depths of the human mind. Who on earth could proudly sell these… things? https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3844/...a258ae2a_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3914/...430d9191_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3910/...ef9499b6_b.jpg After two hours we leave for an uneventful flight. Day 15
Return day, sigh. Times flies when you’re having fun. We wake up early. Very early. Too early for my liking, to catch LAX-JFK DL 2487 06:45 15:11 Seats 14A – 14B (Y) https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...7d649b67_b.jpg Thanks to STE+ status we seat in Economy Comfort. The cabin is crowded: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5554/...10668ef5_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/...fa0857ef_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5576/...9ff1b9ca_b.jpg Whoa! I almost forgot the obligatory toilet pic: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/...77071f36_b.jpg Soaring through the clouds: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/...b23474fe_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3894/...d2401785_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3896/...a9032128_b.jpg Uneventful flight. We land in time and head to AZ lounge (AF is being restructured). The lounge is meh: clean, but the offer of food and drinks could use some love. The AF lounge is restructuring, so we stop here anyway. I spot a couple of planes as well: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/...0352267e_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5572/...8ea13b51_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3905/...a8baa392_b.jpg At 5 pm we reach the gate where boarding is ready to start. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. This time I blame waking up too early. Asiago cheese mousse with bread croutons tomato and orange peel – 8 / 10. Finally a good starter. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5574/...558e1dc0_b.jpg Vegetables and pecorino dumplings and pasta with PDO San Marzano tomatoes and basil – 9 / 10. Tasty! The FAs come for a second round and ask what I would like. My honest answer is: everything. They then proceed to refill my dish at an unbelievable level. O double joy! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3911/...7ccc227e_b.jpg Pistachio, ginger and wild greens stuffed chicken breast – 9 / 10. Tasty, tender. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3855/...75900778_b.jpg In the meantime I test all the red wines they have on board. Italian delice – 8 / 10. I was too stuffed to really enjoy it. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5578/...f8e3795d_b.jpg I sleep for a while, watch something that I don’t really remember on the tv, and it’s time for breakfast: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5556/...b29eb8bb_b.jpg Nothing special, but the OJ! Getting there… https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/...85b11acb_b.jpg We land in time and I take a last picture of our plane. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3888/...694ff5b7_b.jpg |
